Shift Cable Replacement for Volvo Penta 5.0GL PEFS SX-M

If you guys have been wondering what's been happening with my channel, it's slowed down a bit because of ongoing maintenance and repairs with my boat.
this video is a shifting cable replacement for a 2000 Fourwinns with a Volvo Penta 5.0GL PEFS SX-M Outdrive. The engine was struggling to go into forward and reverse and I have been out of the water for a while. I had to repair this cable and I will be making new videos very soon.

Thank you for this video. I Just replaced the shift cable on my 2000 four winns 180, I found an easier way to remove the throttle and shift control mechanism without removing the panel. Take the handle off and all screws like he shows on this video. Once its loose, reach in from behind the top side of the panel grab both cables and carefully pull the mechanism out . It should come out pretty easily just gently wiggle it around. Once it's out you can remove the cotter pins of either cable you are replacing.

Thanks bud. Was just replacing bellows and see my shift cable is split and open to the elements. Good time to swap it out and thanks to you it looks relatively fun compared to the reinstall of the bellows and drive. I keep having to buy tools Ill use only once!

Thanks so much for making this video it’s so hard to find info on these middle years engine and drives! The Allen screw is an 1/8” on the throttle handle not metric and luckily mine was not tight either

Great video, tech tip: never start your motor with your drive up(always down) puts severe wear on your U joints. On the input shaft.

So I did this exactly as shown in video, it worked perfectly on my 1999 Four Winns Volvo 5.0 with DuoProp out drive. I am having trouble getting the engine to throttle up in reverse so I think I need to adjust the cables? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

How do you seal or prevent the water from coming in the boat thru the shift cable? my Volvo Penta has like a hose shield around the cable inside the transom but is leaking water and filling up my bilge???? Thanks appreciate the help

Hello and thanks for checking out the channel, if you go to marinepartseurope.com you can follow the left menu and look for your engine and you can find just about any part you need including the cables etc.. you will need to find your engine model numbers on your own or your outdrive model on your own boat, those are usually found with a sticker somewhere around your engine. I found my Main engine Model near the Main Breaker, I found my outdrive model engraved on the side of the lower unit, good Luck!!

You don't need to remove the bolt @ 10:10, just loosen it and slide that piece of metal "out" a little ways, when you go back together shove the piece of metal "in" and tighten the bolt.

If you are referring to this one shift cable job, it was a 16 feet cable, I have video several months back and that was a Throttle cable job and that was 14 feet , hope that helps good luck, I have since sold this boat and now have an Ocean Fishing Boat getting it ready for more action in the Ocean and the Bays. take care, see you out on the water

The cable part number was a Teleflex CCX74014 for this job, good luck

I have the same setup and followed this step by step but for the life of me I can't seem to get the throttle handle off..please help!!

There's only two things holding the handle The middle screw and the Allen wrench screw, it should come right off but only if you unscrew it enough Hope that helps

I have the same control on my 96. You have to move the shifter all the way reverse full throttle, which will expose the allen set screw in a little slot. It will be at the 9:00 position (pointing toward the dash). Remove the set screw and the handle comes right off.

hello brother a question I have a lever the same in my volvo boat and it is a bit hard to change forwards and backwards that you think that could be that.

Great chance it is, if regreasing the cables doesn't immediately fix it, changing them really is the best way to fix stiff shifting , its a night and day difference

Haha, well it starts with a few beers of your choosing, you have to make sure you fail miserably using black tape along with getting frustrated at the small amount of space in to attempt your cable pulling, it is only then that your heart will reveal the "I don't give a damn knot" lol

14' 1-CCX74014 TEL CCX74014 16' 1-CCX74016 TEL CCX74016 This was what I recall so use it as a guide, and research further, its been very long ago but this was ordered from boatstoreusa so im guessing it's the shift and throttle they are unique so you can't mix them up good luck
