What a load of bullshit. Gear shifting without the clutch doesn't do any damage whatsoever if it's done properly. The only time you might do damage is if you force it out of gear while there is pressure on the gears, such as going uphill with a heavy load. I only use the clutch to help get out of gear with pressure on the gears. I have been using 18 and 13 speed road rangers for 29 years without the clutch and so far have never damaged a gearbox.

Sounds GOOD buddy! Always amazed me how much power and weight in a truck, yet it's like a girl. Shift er easy and soft my dad told me, the first time i ever drove a truck. It was a 1984 pete with a 400 cat and an 18 spd Fuller RoadRanger. Being a young Nebraska kid, I was only 13 and Dad couldn't stay awake and we were clear up in Saskatchewan Canada and Dad was delivering combine headers. After the 2nd time i woke up because we were almost in a ditch at 60 mph, I said to him, "I'll drive er!". He slid to the back, I and i slid over and down the road we went. Grinding gears a little he says whoa whoa she's got all the power in the world but when u shift her, she's like a girl, u gotta be real easy on her, In no time i was half timing it with him in the worst of stop and go traffic. We lived in a different world back then. Lol

Reminds me of a story my brother told. Way out in western Queensland where the front gate is 60 miles from the station homestead the kids get to learn to drive super early on cos the parents got way too much work to do to spend all that time driving them to the front gate to catch the bus to school. Anyway, being that kids learn to drive pretty much everything that moves the local copper caught this blokes daughter driving the road train on the main highway at 14. He told her to take it home straight away and not to drive it on the main highway any more. He knew she could drive it as good as anyone. Road trains out there have at least 3 trailers of cattle. ;)

That was my driving style back in the eighties when I pulled logs. I drove a CL9000 Ford with a 425 Cat and a 13 speed. I asked my boss if I could pipe it and he told me sure but if you get stupid you pay your own tickets. Was easy around town but when I got out of town I would open her up and let her go........ I was 18 and didn't realize I had it made. It has been all these years later and I still love that sound. Hope to drive again one day before I can't anymore.

It was trimmed out in aluminum and chrome and that Cat really purred with a load.

Excellent Truck Driver. The sound of the 12.7 engine straight piped is just good to appreciate your professional shifting style, your truck can last many years, even decades with you. Try to teach to those ones who want to be truck operators, in order to recover a part of all that good drivers that we have lost in this industry along the years. Jacobs brake was, is and will be for ever a necessity, but must be used responsibly, is not a game, good to see a young driver with that concept clear. My respect to you!

Nice smooth patient work from a young fella there. My longest days in a truck was hauling 40-50 tons of sand in a Intl with a 330hp M11 in a large metro area, sure it shifted nice.. weak engine means minimal torque roll and suspension compression to unload during shifts. Was real happy to get my KW/C16/auto-shifter back from the shop. Smooth shifting is satisfying, a nice connection and feel.. but hauling heavy with a weak engine and manual in a city makes for a long tiring day. But I'll take a manual otr every time.

theyre easy when you get the hang of it. although I haven't driven a truck before in my life, can imagine it being as challenging as learning stick the first time and maybe a little more so because of the size. i'd love to drive trucks but the thing is the size of the truck vs the road and other cars. haha

Jerry S It's a tad more difficult than learning stick on a car. First off there's so much more vehicle than a car, probably the tractor itself weighs 8-9x a normal car. Trucks like this don't have synchronized transmissions, so you'll have to double clutch or if you're a real truck driver you float the gears like the guy in the video(note how he doesn't touch the clutch unless he's coming to a stop or taking off). Knowing how to drive a stick in a car helps, but it's not the full story of a truck. Yes, I have drivin' a road tractor 😊
