That old DM used every one of its 237 horses to get out of that quarry. Love seeing these old Macks work! Thanks for the video.

Drove a few DMs 6 wheelers with a 237 and 2 stick 6 speeds. Great simple truck with minimal shifting. I think the last of the DM models they squeezed intercooling into them so a 300hp maxidyne could be used.

Drove many of these DM 686 SX Bull Dog Mack’s in different configurations dump packer rolloff mixer 237 but my truck had the mud stick not air shifted my favorite Mack to drive
@AppalachianRust3 ай бұрын
Yeah we’ve got a few Mack’s this is the only one with the air shifter and is the most used dump truck we have. We’ve got a log truck that’s a DM 237 it was a mixer one time

Rockbridge County had a few Military surplus trucks a long time ago an older gentleman told us that they had to go out of lone jack in reverse because reverse was geared slightly lower than first gear, but the old Mack pulled her up
@AppalachianRust3 ай бұрын
I believe the road was steeper at one time than it is now, but it’s still a pull coming out loaded. You can see signs of the old road in the woods

Never saw an air shift on a 6 speed before. Looks like the same shifter knob that the 12 speed had. I drove many, many R-600 Macks with the 6 speed trans but they were all 2 stick shifters behind 300+ engines.
@dieselgypsy11002 ай бұрын
The company had a bunch of 237 Macks but they all had the straight 5 speed. I liked the six speed because it gave us 5 speeds for PTO work!
@AppalachianRust2 ай бұрын
@@dieselgypsy1100 yeah I think the air shift is a little uncommon we have a few trucks that have the two sticks though, so I’m familiar with it. I spread stone on steep roads around here so with the six speed in low the body will raise quicker as the truck runs slower

Mack’s was very hard to beat off road hauling coal. Start breaking springs weld up a set of walking beams then start breaking spiders. I would be multi-millionaire if I had money per ton I hauled in Mack’s & Rock Trucks with bed cleaned out.
@AppalachianRust3 ай бұрын
No coal around here but it’s so many used for switch trucks pulling log trailers out the woods. I know of one recently that I believe they welded up the rear after blowing it out. It’s actually one that shows up in one of these videos (at least it was on the same job) My “Mack dog in the mud” video

You in Virginia buddy?? That quarry looks familiar lol. That setup is hard to beat with that DM! Wont win a race but then again I’m not in any hurry anywhere but I sure wanna make it reliably and in one piece! That would be the truck I’d always trust to get the job done!

How much does your truck weigh? I'm wondering if the DMs make good quarry trucks, you have to have low truck weight to get 21-23 tons on.
@AppalachianRust24 күн бұрын
@@tmeyer729 unless you’ve got an aluminum body and a drop axel you’re not going to get that. Truck weighs about 22000 I can only haul 15.5 tons on tandems. But for this truck I don’t want anymore really for some of the rough places

PACCAR reports a full 80% of all new trucks ordered from them are now being speced w automated transmissions B E C A U S E most young driver do not know how to properly shift a manual and while they are learning they burn out a couple of clutches. Do you know what a clutch job cost for a heavy truck? !

Revs are way too high IMO, keep rpm low.
@JimmyCasket0229 күн бұрын
You’ve really got no choice the gears are too far apart to shift at a lower rpm
