You start with 1L - 2L-3L then Range 4L-4H-5L-5H-6L-6H.. If you empty you can stay on Low till 5th gear.. If your really going into the mountains it could be to use the High spilit also for the 1-2 and 3rd gear but thats not often happen.. Most the time you can shift to the 4th or 5th gear before you have to split for the first time..You know with the split you have 1/2 gear available if a hole gear is to high for the mountain..I hope that helped..Andy

Thanks for ilustrations. You don´t try the i shift ? Here in Brazil, more than 80% of the Volvo´s trucks is equiped with I shift and Scania going in the same way with Opticruise, including my Scania. I like to change gears sometimes, but the comfort of automatic gears box is the best for don´t stress in the traffic . Hugs from Brazil and have a good weekend.
@gsd4me0010 жыл бұрын
I see the driver uses first gear a lot then skip shifts into third while the auto box only uses first on a hill. If I was driving a manual, I would use second high or even third low to take off loaded as does the auto box. Also, having driven the auto box I would drive a manual the way the auto box operates and not be afraid to rev it out momentarily then skip two or three (half) gears. For someone who is trying to get their head around this 'box, dont' think of it as a twelve speed, but as an six speed with high and low ratios for each gear.

Why did u start with 1 st gear? My teacher told me to start with 3rd gear if im empty and 2nd gear if im with trailer.
@tntfreddan31384 жыл бұрын
Depends on what engine it is. First truck I learned to drive was a Volvo FH 440. When I took my license for truck+trailer (gross weight was 53 tons and max weight is 64 tons in Sweden) I started on 1-lo. Then 1-hi, 2-hi, 3-hi, 4-hi, 5-lo, 5-hi, 6-lo, 6-hi, on plain road. Then I drove a Volvo FH 540 with I-Shift but empty weight on that truck was 16 tons without trailer and 28 tons with trailer. When you're transporting gravel and asphalt and only has 540hp when most trucks in the same line of work rarely has less than 580hp, it gets quite heavy.

I think starting in several gears has something to do with the differential. My car is only suitable for starting with 1L when the load is 35 tons. With a load of 25 tons and starting with 2L, I don't think it is suitable. I'm at 100km/h at about 1400rpm.

I'm still struggling with those range-splitting gearboxes. When do you range and when do you split? You have those numbers on the shifter - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. If I go through 1, 2 and 3 then press a button and go through 4, 5 and 6, did I use the range gears or the split gears?
@ikacbmw66910 жыл бұрын
well first, i am not truck driver, but i know something about them...i still don't understand splitting, but i can answer your question about range....what you said is range (low or high range), and gears are: 1(lo)/4(hi), 2(lo)/5(hi), 3(lo)/6(hi)

TheTornado121 i just watched another video, and understand splitting now as well...so you have 4 gears in one position: range low: 1 lo = 1 1 hi = 2 2 lo = 3 2 hi = 4 3 lo = 5 3 hi = 6 range high: 4 lo = 7 4 hi = 8 5 lo = 9 5 hi = 10 6 lo = 11 6 hi = 12 i hope you understand split and range much better after second comment

It beats me why anyone would want a manual gearbox in a truck these days when the automated ones are more efficient than a driver ever can be, especially in Volvo's case where theirs is the best. There are more important things to worry about than changing gears in todays world.
@JVerschueren10 жыл бұрын
Well, basically, you don't want a manual gearbox because, when heavily loaded, one has to make many gearchanges to get up to any sort of reasonable speed with regard to other traffic. With some gearboxes, making 9 shifts to get up to 35mph/55km/h is no fun at all. However, you do want control over which gear you're in on steep inclines, on slippery roads or for economy purposes and modern automatics offer this through manual overrides (though, on the economy front, you'd be hard pressed to do better than the economy setting nowadays).
@userfriendly198110 жыл бұрын
On that one i'll answer.... Automated transmission are for those who don't like to be trucker... A good trucker who know how to work his gear is still more economic than a automated transmission.
@ZombieZim7139 жыл бұрын
userfriendly1981 lol, great response (sarcasm) The days of manual trucks are numbered. Get used to it.
@userfriendly19819 жыл бұрын
you can think what you want, but for me automated gear box is only a way to turn the worst trucker into something normal and to turn the best one into pieces of shit.... I've already climbed the fancy gap with 79 000 pounds and a good trucker can climb it easily but a bad one will burn everything. So for me an automated transmi is an handicap and it only turn something that is fun to drive into a vulgar pickup. Real trucker have real gear box and know how to use it

@userfriendly198110 жыл бұрын
Ok one thing i've got to tell you.... You are awfully lucky to have a Synchromesh transmission. Because non-synchro transmission the best way to get screwed is to drive on neutral... Anyway you must never and i said never drive on neutral when pulling or braking.... The compression the engine can give you help a little bit for braking... It's maybe a little bit but on a brake maintenance it make the difference....
@Bladsmith10 жыл бұрын
Lucky? Only Sisu offers non-synchro trucks today and that's special orders only. Also, rolling in neutral will damage any gearbox, because the gearbox oil pump is driven by the engine. Aand the engine brake is used for fuel efficiency and eliminating brake fade on long declines, not brake conservation.
