Is The Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro Worth The Price?

The 4Runner TRD Pro is a wonderful off-road capable vehicle. However, when it comes to on-road behavior it is far from perfect. The top of the line TRD Pro grade also normally comes with a lot of markup from the dealership, making the lesser grades seem more attractive. Is there enough in the TRD Pro to make it worth the price?

Great review. I own a 22 sr5 premium 4x4. Gotta say I kind of disagree with the engine transmission not going together well. I think they feel perfectly connected and the shifts are about perfect. I guess if you compare it too todays 8 and 10 speeds then yeah it’s weird. But for this old driving design it’s one of the best.

Why do these reviewers keep saying ONLY TRDs can go off road? Me and plenty of SR5 owners go off rd with ease. Engine/trans/4wd system/transfer case are all the same. Suspension is a little different but still very capable. Do more then just take what T4R they give you and spout what’s in the brochure ppl. Would u also say a jeep sport can’t go off rd as the lower level jeep trim? Smh

I currently have a 20 Trd Pro and a 16 trail Ed. with kdss. I/we use the pro mostly for our travels and off road excursions. I like the fact that it’s old school and a very tough vehicle. So much that today I ordered another pro to replace my 20. I put on 20-30k miles per year. I did spec out a loaded 22 trd off road premium and it was just over $50k. The 22 Trd pro was $53,335 so NO it’s not a $10k difference. I like the pro suspension and a lot of other goodies you can’t get on the off road premium. The best bang for your buck is the regular off road. I do plan on some minor mods but nothing crazy. To me ….. I like the uniqueness of the pro. These are great off pavement vehicles for exploring. The SR5’s are very capable great value 4wd vehicles too. If you want a built tough road vehicle suv then you might want the limited. Thanks for the great vid and the effort you put in. 👍🏻

@@quantumdecoherence1289 in March 2022 there are two pro’s in Memphis selling for 65k (used 60,000 miles) and one for 71k. I found a off road premium for 47k yet several off road premiums here are mid 50’s right now. I hope to get the off road premium I found this week from the dealer since I put in an offer for it. At this point I do not mind paying the full 47k asking price since many used ones here are as much or more. I think I would rather have this than the new models coming out in 2023

My wife has a 2020 AG TRD Pro. I believe if you are going to mod a Pro, which I have seen people do, you are wasting you money. If you are going to mod, then the TRD Off-road is the way to go. It has the KDSS suspension which I was surprised that the pro didn’t. I have to say though, those Fox Shocks are killer. The main thing that I hate and really pisses me off is the fact is there are no exclusive TRD colors anymore. You can get Army Green or Lunar Rock on anything you want, so ya, they pretty much pissed off every TRD Pro owner with that.

Pro is better resale guaranteed. But after living with several versions of the 4Runner and the GX460 in the house... I would say that if you are gonna spend PRO money, pay a bit more for the GX460 for the V8 and 6-speed. The limited is actually the best all around for daily driving (not sure about the under powered statement as I don't see the need for more unless you are towing a lot of stuff) with a great price tag. You can do most trails on street tires on the limited, no need to overspend.

Always wonder why nobody mentions the upgraded speakers that you get in the TRD Pro. Of the original equipment in my 2019 TRD Pro, I've only replaced the radio, the roof rack, the springs, and the headlights, tail lights and fog lights. My Fox shocks, tires, rims, and upgraded speakers are all staying. At the $45K that I paid for it brand new, I can't complain at all. It's a great truck.

Got a 2021 TRD Pro for MSRP last February and am very happy with it. No plans to do extensive mods. I put an aftermarket bumper and winch on the front. Love the suspension on road and even more off road. One other nice thing about the 4Runners is that the spare tire is under rather than behind the car, so makes it easier to use bicycle and motorcycle hitch racks.

I don't know. I think it's hard to justify. Yeah you pay the premium for reliability, but a 5 speed transmission in 2021 should be a felony. The 4Runner cultists are also exceptionally happy that this platform finally got LED headlights, an updated head unit and Blindspot monitoring... Features that have been on other SUVs for 10 years now. I think it's hard to justify the full MSRP of a TRD Pro right now.

I have one, I bought it three years ago as a five-year-old used vehicle. At that point I could justify the engine/ transmission combo. No way could I spend new MSRP money for this engine transmission combo, I actually really dislike it. Don't get me wrong, it's reliable, it's just that the torque band and transmission gearing never seem to work together properly, it just never seems to be in the right gear.

Worth it to me .... I love mine, BUT like stated in the review, I'm keeping the suspension that comes on the Pro. The OR Premium is a much better deal if you're going to gut the suspension anyway - and you could get KDSS if you wanted it. Not available on the Pro. This is my daily driver and my only vehicle, and I learned from modding vehicles-past that whenever you mod, you ALWAYS take a risk that you could be left with nothing to drive for a while. I don't care how good you are.

Lol this is very true. I’ve modded every vehicle I have until now. I’ve just purchased a 2022 4Runner TRD Pro and the only things I will ever add to it is the Pedal Commander and rock rails. All the vehicles in the past, even when modded by professional and reputable shops, always ended up in the repair shop at one time or another.
@whocaresjustdoit
@whocaresjustdoit 2 жыл бұрын
@@kimbuck2177 you can read it up on it but I don’t believe the pedal commander voids your warranty since it’s plug & play, and doesn’t modify your ECU. You can just unplug it before you go to the dealership for service. To be honest I wouldn’t have kept the 4Runner if not because of Pedal Commander. Coming from a Ford Raptor, the sluggishness of the 4Runner’s throttle body was just painful to drive.

Why isn’t the TRD Pro offered with a third row of seats like the regular 4Runner?
@Kristian_Saile
@Kristian_Saile 2 жыл бұрын
My guess is that the models with the rear locker have reduced payload and the 3rd row adds a good deal of weight so the combo would be a pretty bad payload. Honestly the TRD’s have terrible payload d for that reason alone the SR5 makes a better proposition if you are using it as an overland vehicle since ATrac alone is really capable.
@lrodd247
@lrodd247 Жыл бұрын
@@Kristian_Saile But don't the trd pro's and off road Editions have the third row delete? That would make them better for overlanding since you can fit all your things and even car camp while out in the wilderness. Or is there an option for the Sr5 with 2 rows ?
@Kristian_Saile
@Kristian_Saile Жыл бұрын
@@lrodd247 the 3rd row is only available in the SR5 and Sr5 premium trims. The rear lockers take away payload rating and the 3rd row adds a decent amount of weight so I would guess that’s why they didn’t offer 3rd row on the models with rear lockers. The 3rd row is pretty efficient in how it folds down but still eats into your cargo space by adding something like a 3” higher floor in the back.

@@lrodd247 yeah with two people you have a ton of room. It’s interesting that the 5th gen has essentially the same interior space as an 80 series Land cruiser does. Lets get the basics right if you want to convince people you know something about autos. First a crossover is a suv as well. You mean “truck” not suv. A truck has a body on frame where a crossover or unibody is frameless. Also the term you are looking for is trim not grade. The TRD Pro is a trim level. Who knows what else you missed. I tuned out mid way.
