Judo even as a sport is a deadly tool for self defense. People need to understand that doing judo or wrestling or boxing, besides their respective rule sets, will be the best self defense classes. Try and test a boxer a wrestler or judoka in the streets, those are trained under pressure, athletics, and know how to manage their respective distance. In boxing you ll end up knocked out standing and with the two others head planted in the concrete even much deadlier consequences. Never underestimate the efficiency of those three, think of that: they are sports and yet the best self defense one can actively practice with full opposition... besides I truly appreciate your content shintaro, great as always to learn from you thank you for sharing your knowledge! Looking forward to meeting you in your dojo in ny next time come over!

Been training judo the past 4 months and these podcasts have been so helpful. I’m someone who is training judo to keep fit, for self defence and to learn a beautiful effective martial art. As I’m not a judoka who’s goals are competition orientated I do feel we there should be a little more emphasis On newaza. Judo has already done so much for me boosting my confidence and is helping tackle my anxiety by putting me in uncomfortable situations and this podcast has really helped me so far in my journey and with self growth. You’ve got a lifetime listener now guys 😂 much love from Walsall England.

Thank you for this discussion. I liked your criticism of “knee wrestling.” Never thought about it in those terms. And you are right, it wastes previous tatami time, even though it might not be on purpose. Kudos on pointing out, although more needs to said and shown, on the explosive nature of judo ne waza and what it can contribute to grappling in general, self-defense, and more importantly on judo’s practice integrally. It might be interesting to describe and discuss Kosen Judo, a guest could be brought to the show since Shintaro stated that he is not comfortable discussing it. And finally, would like to hear more about this “freestyle judo movement.” Looking forward to my visit to your dojo Shintaro. I am the guy that wrote to you about a possible visit to NYC (with my kids). I reside in Salou, Catalonia; but I am originally from Puerto Rico. We will be practicing judo during our stay in Columbus, OH this summer (before our NYC visit), and might get across this “freestyle judo” and its’ Midwest component. Bests, Hiram

Such an amazing podcast. Personally, I truly believe you're way better than other podcast in the martial arts and combat sports game. So technical and richly informative. Love and respect from Brazil.

it is interesting that people don't put down wrestling for lack of leg attacks and winning by pinning - but they do put down judo for that

I am in an amazing school that has a very competitive based past, but currently no competitors. I personally would like to do more combat oriented judo. We do have one instructor that is a BJJ purple belt that loves to work in more Newaza. I would like to even work in nogi judo at some point.

Great discussion, I'ma bjj dude, wanted to know how do you build into newaza mentality it's in a bjj gym? (There's no judo schools nearby)
@gianttigerfilms2 жыл бұрын
In Judo if you stop making clear progress with ground work they stand you up. So if you’re doing ground work you want to be fast and decisive. Practice safe but with urgency
@justin88652 жыл бұрын
@@gianttigerfilms thanks that's a good idea. I just think there's something to newaza that could translate well to bjj sicne when your taken down you have a half a second where your disoriented

The truth is many judoka in the generation before the generation before ours didn't learn newaza (maybe an America problem?). This caused them to be biased against it, since they only saw bad newaza, and they taught that bias to the generation before ours, who are generally pretty mystified by newaza. Combine that with refereeing being generally very biased against it, there was little reason to practice.

Idk, we do plenty of it in ours with an 80+yo head instructor.

Turtle stalling should be a shido You get a penalty for stalling on the feet and being too defensive why is the ground any different
@jtom416 Жыл бұрын
In turtle, you're back is exposed and you're on the floor. It's hard to get inside, but you're vulnerable. Stalling on the feet, you're actively avoiding confrontation
