Damn, that’s wild. I had to learn Japanese and know all the throws and their names for each belt ranking. Took me three years just to get to Orange (and we used stripes too). And it’s not like I didn’t try. I came to every practice and I competed. Every dojo is different, I guess.

Also some people are just gifted. I have always been the one that had to work harder but I still got my first black in 5 years. Because I spent 3 to 6 hours a day 6 to 7 days a week. Then I’m teaching a guy who filled in for a high jumper in high school at state had never done it before and took state. Just blessed by nature.

If I had more time on the mat (or access, for that matter), and I was more initiated in the culture and a lot of my friends and family were judoka, I would have definitely had more time to learn and get stronger faster. I witnessed people get a brown belt less than three years and it was legit. The guy became a MMA competitor in Japan. The professor's name was Marcus connan silveria and he's part owner of American top team and the lead trainer of Amanda Nunes

I got my Shodan in Japan (1st dan) and it took me 10 months. I'm in a University's Judo club. There are promotional tournaments almost every month here called Tsukinami. We train 5 times a week, 4 hour practice session each time.

@JustMe-tc8qd No, I started here. I did a Kengaku (trial session) at the University's Judo club to see if I liked it and immediately decided to join. Practice is tough, but the club pays for everything including the gi, tournaments/transportation and etc. Japan is an amazing environment to learn Judo. Hope others can come train in Japan too.

It took me 12 years to get my black belt... but I started at 5 and got my black belt at 17. Belts don't matter that much, I watched people go from white to black while I was a purple belt. Just focus on what you can do to make yourself better.

In my old dojo, my sensei made all brown belts going to black take written tests! So much respect to those black belts too, all of them humble AF. @lordapplesauce4323 you would hope that would be the case and wish there was such an ideal world! but I am both physically gifted or was and have knowledge of the art! when I was doing judo and involved with it I should’ve been at a brown belt level! But I watched many people who did not deserve their rank promoted quicker then I was! I think it comes down to more of the politics in the dojo who’s running it and how much ass are you willing to kiss. I’ve mastered the art of Boxing but it still very much so bothers me when people make videos like this knowing there’s so many political nuances today in the Schools! It is every gym it is everywhere. It is nationwide.

In Holland, judo black belts are awarded by the national judo federation, which is a member of the IOC. Individual instructors and clubs have no say whatsoever over who gets a black belt. I think this is a much better system than to leave it to an instructor, who has to take into account some factors which have nothing to do with the art itself.

Same in Canada. The club can promote up to brown belt then each province has a couple black belt promotions per year. You have to have a minimum number of points and demonstrate the Nage no Kata. If you don’t compete for points it can take up to 3 years to qualify for your shodan.

When it happens relatively fast, I think that the perspective is let nature take it's course. However, when it is slow, even though you may be working very hard, it can start to weigh on you. This is especially so if there is a criteria that is expressed and you surpass that or if there seems to be none at all.

In the DC area there was a Judo Player named Charles Cherry. Huge ex marine wrestler.’6’ 340. I was 6’3”’235-250 and I lost to him 3 times. He went undefeated and got his black in a year or so. Really nice guy but damn he was hard to beat.

We had a short, muscular dude come to our gym and he became a brown belt in a few months. He went to the tournaments and ripped through guys. Even though I could beat him and we had tough matches, he was able to beat all the people he faced in his weight range in tournaments.

@@jimmynich4791 Before it seemed as if 10 8 to 10 years was a good estimation (for BJJ). However, now it seems that 12 to 15 years seems like the current path. At a lot of places it is not based on merit any more and is based on time in grade (with regular attendance). Throw in life circumstances and that means it is a long haul. It's not the wild, wild west when many people were able to go from blue to black in five to six years with strong attendance. Now with gyms being ubiquitous and guys training six times a week or some six times a week (twice a day), ranking seems to have slowed down. You have guys who are blue and purple belts that can tap out black belts with ease and they will be made to sit indefinitely.

When I took Judo in the late 90s, I made it to green belt in about 6 months. However, I grew up wrestling guys all time doing horseplay and I had a guy show me Osoto-gari in the 9th grade and another guy show me a bear hug trip in the 10th. I used the Osoto-gari on a green belt on my first day to class. I threw him down four times in a row and he never came back after that day. He should have asked me how I was able to take him down so easily. I regret that he quit if it was due to me.

I’ve been to all the tournaments available here consistently and I think I only missed one or two. I guess effort comes in lots of different ways. This is a problem with western dojos. I have a theory that it probably started with schools that catered to kids and parents. When parents pay for something they wanna make sure that at least their kid is happy and that they got their money's worth. So giving out belts every few months became a measuring stick. Unfortunately, that practice is also applied to adult students. Most people can't get black belt in such a short amount of time. That's ridiculous. Very few people come out as quality students in such sistem. Personally, when I see dojos that advertise holding parties for kids in addition to training i know it's most likely bad dojo.

Here in Brasil, by the rules of CBJ (Brazilian Judo Confederation - translated acronym) you need at least 5 years and a half, or 4 and a half if you are international medalist. Honestly im a beginner and dont know if this is bad or good, but if i was a good athlete, i would love to be graduated shodan under 4 years.

At my club it depends how much you compete. If you are competing a lot and winning matches with good Judo you can get to a black belt pretty quick.

Personally I believe it should be at the coaches discretion in how he gives out belts. I take the approach of seeing how well they do in tournaments along with their technique at executing those throws. But you never want to give it out too early.

Today is much different than 40 years ago. I received orange at 3 yrs. For John, 2 years for blue to brown. I saw Mike, his brother, go from brown to black in 3 years. It was an old school Dojo, not a factory. We were very small to begin with, often beating higher belts at tournaments. Tournaments weren't really a huge deal to us. We were more like family, I said like family, not family. We were also taught things illegal now. Our Sensi was also careful about teaching us that stuff, he made sure that our teenage hormones did not kill someone, he was wise. Later on, all of us left the Dojo, it became the largest in SD county, another factory. Sad indeed. I started practicing again 3 weeks ago, fuck I'm old, but making progress alone. I love it. I'm not disrespecting the modern thing, it could be better though. Live and let live. There just seems to be something missing now.

the original system founded by Kano was the competition system, something like this interview. You win, you grade.. now, in some places, you win... you win again... you beat blackbelts in tournaments... and you don't grade. You first have to do kata.. then maybe you'll grade... so it turns out that almost anybody can do kata, but lose at the actual ability-fighting level, and still get their black-belt. This has resulted in a country like Canada being questioned by the IJF about how they produce more black-belts than average. The answer is simple... you bring the average down. Sad.. Judo is a demonstrably excellent fighting art, but if you reduce it to kata grading.. you lose that.

Interresting. I Just passed the exam leessnelheid tgen a week ago. Over here in the Netherlands when you have make it too brown of minimum of 1 full year before you can test with the association. That is if a qualified Instructor (3th dan plus certified to do so) signs of on it. Then you can take the test. The only way to become a first dan through competition is to actually become a national champion. Also one must be at least 16 years old.

Depends from what country the question is coming from. Swedish Judo federation don't have that short time span and it is in some way harder requirements. They also have defined time spans between colors that gets longer and longer while you get higher belts. Here what he said there is no nage no kata at all. So on top of all the "normal" Judo fighting training we in Sweden need to go to kata courses and train with a dedicated partner the whole set of the nage no kata. So more or less a Swedish blackbelt could enter a nage no kata Swedish championship. For those that don't know what it is. Here is a short description from Wikipedia: "The kata is composed of 3 techniques each from the five classifications of throw in judo: Te-waza (手技, hand techniques) Koshi-waza (腰技, hip techniques) Ashi-waza (足技, foot techniques) Ma-sutemi-waza (真捨身技, rear sacrifice techniques) Yoko-sutemi-waza (橫捨身技, side sacrifice techniques) Each of these 15 techniques is performed twice in the specified order, both right and left handed. The kata is generally performed in a strictly formalised manner with clearly defined Reigi sahō (礼儀作法, rules of etiquette)." And you can make the graduation to black belt in different ways. For example you can get a little bit of a easier graduation if you have proven yourself in tournaments and gathered points there by beating blackbelt and so on. 😅 But yes the most common graduation is that you go with another brown belt and throw each other and they look at what and how you throw.. Then you show the whole nage no kata. Then a session with questions.. Like "where in this kind of trow is the kosushi?" and so on. They are very strict and you are nervous and the other guy make a mess as uke and you don't caught it (like Uki Otoshi where you are looking forward and the Uki is landing behind your back and you can't see him or what he is doing.) then you will get penalized and not qualified. When you should apperently should suppose to know that he were doing a faulty forward roll behind you.. 😂 I have heard that some Europe country has half of the Naga no kata. I don't remember which one though. And what half do they mean? (only some of the above classifications on right and left or half in all of the classifications but only on right side?)🤔

I’ve seen it take a Judoka 3 months. The first 2 tournaments he fought novice and advanced. Won gold in both. Beating several black belts including a Sandan. Next he was asked to join Texsas A&M (Judo) then a scholarship to the Olympic Training Center for Judo . Unheard of talent and Skill. I’ve been in Judo since 1988 and never seen anyone rank as fast.

Wow, our system is a grading per 2 months, there are White, Yellow stripe, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Red, Brown, Black stripe, Black. Of course, if you fail or didn’t go to the grading, you don’t move up belts, your grading can also be moved earlier if you are really good.

Sensei Higashi - some of us early teens asked our sensei's this question (now 50 years ago, btw): they both said it was theoretically possible to go from white to black in a single tournament in Japan if you just kept beating black belts and both had seen this happen too although they admitted even then it was rare. Now it looks like there are more definite time requirements.

I'm all for Rendori and skills-testing-through-competition, but "safety has to be number 1". There is no substitute for safety. Some injuries are so serious that a person is maimed for the rest of his life, and some waza if done "harder, stronger, and faster" could possibly kill somebody. It's the responsibility of competent and ethical Senseis to make sure that these things never happen. Never. Why? Because you cannot take it back once it happened...So, in your desire to earn a Black Belt, you had better not seriously injure or maim anyone... If anything at all I do not hear ethics being taught in many or most Judo dojos. Maybe it is time to bring that back.

In Judo. The Black Belt Shodan is where you really start to learn all the advanced throws and Grappling. Bjj has many who get their black belt in less then 5 years but these are people who cantrain 5 6 and 7 days a week

I practiced Dakota con Judo. My 8th degree Judo instructors required that you be able to execute all throws for a specific rank from both sides of the body effectively above green belt in order to be promoted. Ne wiza or ground fighting had to be proficient too. Promotion intervals were different on an individual basis. Many of us never got past brown belt.

In germany it will take longer. The national rules have intermetiate belts like white-yellow yellow-orange orange-green. Also each kyu requires at least half a year preparation and a dan one year. For a dan you have to prepare at least a year and you must have age 16. The exams are also a presentation of a certain amout of techniques in various situations and some randori. The randori can be skipped if there are a number competitions marked in your Judopassport.

According to "Graduierungsordnung des Deutschen Judo-Bundes e.V.", "Möglich sind bis zu drei Graduierungen innerhalb von 365 Tagen, wobei die Graduierung zum 8. Kyu hierbei nicht mitgezählt wird.". So... Year 1: 8, 7, 6, 5; Year 2: 4, 3, 2; Year 3: 1; Assuming you had passed your 7th Kyu exam on January 1st, 2024, you could theoretically be a brown belt on January 1st, 2026 and a black belt on January 1st, 2027, a total of 3 years + whatever it took for 8th Kyu.

My sensei was from Japan and we worked together literally everyday. He promoted me to sandan (low brown) within 13 months. After that, I started teaching. Help open another club, and after another 3 years'ish I received my Shodan (black belt.)
