I was told to join by parents at 10 years old, stopped after 2 months asked by high school coaches to start at 17 years old, stopped after 4 months, but at 23 years old I felt the urge to learn martial arts and stumbled upon a great club here in Honolulu, with Sensei Kevin Asano. Now I've been consistently a student here for 5 years, don't plan on stopping, and have no regrets looking back. Start now, just find a disciplined, and supportive club!!

I started judo at 21, healthy and quite decent at it. I came back when I was older and financially prepared for it. I came back to judo at 29, working full time and my Sensei did everything he could to break my spirit and enjoyment of Judo. So respectfully, a "mean coach" can ruin adults just as easily. I hold no ill feelings towards the shihan. But that was WRONG how he did me and other judoka who just wanted to get back into it. (He didn't like any ranked judoka that he didn't promote eg. Me as a San Kyu and other various color belts that came to train.) Excuse the venting, I just want to say if we're going to keep Judo alive, let's have friendlier dojos. Osu 🥋

Started at 25, did 1 month - COVID hit, stopped for a year, came back for another month, stopped completely for an another year. Decided to take it seriously at 27 - first class back (as a white belt) tore my MCL but showed up to class 2 weeks later after I could walk again. 3 years in and now a Shodan (black belt). Received my black belt maybe quicker? due to back to back competitions through my 3 years. Having so much fun right now and learning even deeper knowledge of it. It’s so rewarding!

I started at about 33 or 34 after my son had been doing it for a while. It looked fun so I tried it and I loved it! I havent been for a little over a year due to an ankle injury I got from somethings else. Should be going back in a couple weeks though! Super excited!

Man i needed to hear this. My parents were self employed during the great inflation. Whe the US dollar lost half its value in 15 years between 1965 & 1980. We were bankrupt in 1980. There was no $ for me to pursue sports. Im 55 now and the local judo club just opened up again. And the bjj gym is an 11 minute walk from my house. I'm working 7 days a week to pay off my house in 1.5 years. Then i can invest my mortgage payment and spend $112/month on gym membership and roll 6 days/week if i want. And only work 40hrs/wk!

So true...I have done judo from about 8, and I have noticed everyone has either just started or has come back after a break. I run my own club now but I also had a 10 year break and had to work through it all again.
@larryzach78802 ай бұрын
So true! I started at 19 and the first two years were brutal, but the club I joined had a ton of experienced guys both a little bit older and younger than me and they all kinda looked at me and said. "Are you serious? Ok let's dance." Great guys, and that spirit helped me come to love Judo. If I started as a kid I would have 1000 % quit before highschool.

Best time is not about age but about readiness. Ideally one start Judo after reaching black or brown belt in TRADITIONAL Karate or Taekwondo. Why? Because traditional Karate or Taekwondo teaches the basic of self defense. Although they were designed to win against non trained opponets, they teach fundaments of fighting. And these are very important. Once we have reached a black (or brown) belt in traditional Karate or Taekwondo, then we can train more competitive martial arts. Judo is a great option considering the strong similarity of these three martial arts. If we start Judo too early, i.e without learning Karate or Taekwondo,we would be distracted too early to the competitive path. Or just like mentioned here, they have just vanished although being in promising competitive tracks before. The fundament is too weak.

Started at 45, loved it, but previous injury from hockey put an end to it. After watching my son( started at 4.5 years old now13) train and compete at high level I had to do it. Momentum swings in judo seem big, my son has won alot at a young age, US Open, Jr Olympics, but fell off a little, now the Momentum is swinging up. Mayo Quanchi in Rhode Island. ..How do you feel about only 4 athletes qualifying for judo in the Olympics?

It's never about how much you missed. It's always about how much you are stacking up today (and tomorrow, avoid choices today that cost you doing what you like tomorrow). You can't get lost time back, you can make sure you enjoy your time today and tomorrow. I wish I didn't have a 10 year gap between starting and returning. What then? Now I have accumulated a couple of years that I wouldn't have if I hadn't started back then and returned later. I could be lamenting my choices at 40 saying "wish I returned to judo at my early 30's, now I get injured way more easily and I have a long journey of learning ahead of me" (the long learning journey ahead can also be a wonderful thing, means you won't run out soon). I didn't start lifting until I was around 30. Sure it would've been massively different if I started at 20 or earlier. Does it take away all the accumulated benefits for life quality and enjoyment of training or the visual changes? No. Almost none of us is that 1/100th of a % that becomes something special in anything we set on to do. Many of us won't even make that 1 % that has a chance to try out if they could become something special. But we have the protagonist syndrome in the back of our heads, that if we're not on our way to be the best, we're losing something. We also think that we would've been on the optimal path from day 1 if we started earlier. Maybe we would've lost the spark, got injured, were just lazy or busy. Who can tell. The fact is that in life you start at 0 and everything you add to that is a win. Never stop learning skills and information. It's not a losing game, you win every step on that road.

Good discussion. I think it depends on what your goals are and what one is trying to learn. Anytime is better than never starting but naturally, youth level is likely best. The intensity of that training and the other variables mentioned, influence the sustainability and longevity of that training. Start young, have fun, and build skills!

I believe if a child starts at 6 and another starts at 10, by the time they are 16, they are at similar levels. It's the speed at which they learn. Older kids have more attention span. Also, I've noticed kids that start too early end up quiting because they are tired of it by the time the competitions start. I've witnessed many black belts who's children wouldn't continue into adulthood.
