Hey Shawn. Hope you are doing better health wise. ❤ you can whack those shitake stems with a hammer. 2 good whacks will send vibrations though the log and a lot of mushrooms take that as a sign that the tree has fallen. This might help with getting the log to fruit.

You are absolutely right,I just brought home four,one year old inoculated and fruiting shiitake logs. I got them from a very knowledgeable woman who learned from an even more knowledgeable mentor. She said that pick the log up and “dropping it” a couple of times(on it’s end) will help it fruit. It simulates a storm or tree fall.

Wow, Wild Leeks, known also as Ramps. For those who don't know about them; they are a bulbus plant resembling wild chives, with a very strong garlic/onion flavor. Here in the south eastern US they are found in the more mountainous areas. I've seen an entire hill side covered with huge patches. they are great when used sparingly in cooking, can be eaten raw (if you can handle the strong flavor) and are supposedly quite a healthy substitute for chives and green onions. I hope Shawn's patch grows and flourishes. ;-)

Have you ever planted any wild Ginseng plants. My dad use to buy a pound of wild seed every year and plant it all over the county. It is of some Medicinal value! I often find it when roaming my woods. If the berries are Ripe which is usually at the end of August I pick them off and replant them. Very fun to find in your woods knowing its most likly some of the wild seed your dad planted many decades ago!

being an allium plant it makes it a garlic species ... like pepper ... a good check is to see what garlic you can get to grow wild from a single bulb ... take a head of several different types and spread them around ... where they take the allium will also take . yes shitake take 3 to 6 years to get harvest from ... and are good for harvest for 2 to 5 years ... always save a piece of the log to start a new one when you strat harvesting ... so its ready when this log is done

Shawn, thank you for highlighting wild leeks-ramps. The plant is awesome and folks with a healthy population on their property are lucky. Some advice: Your transplants will grow and start a patch but there is a better way. You will have substantially less, actually no, transplant shock if you dig up the leek plants to be transplanted after the leaves turn yellow and wilt down. Also is easier; just need to put bulb in a plastic bag and pop it into a punched-out hole at the new location. no shovel, no watering, carry them in a pouch and plant them all over the place (Jonny leek planter). The goal is to get the transplants forming seeds as quick as possible and I think transplanting dormant bulbs gets to seed production faster than transplanting green plants. I transplanted some in the mid 1970's and two plants have turned into a large patch, Yup takes a long time.

Allium ursinum Similar to the one you described, but it reproduces with bulbs in broadleaf forest soil. It does not like warmth and thrives in moist, acidic or neutral soil. It produces 15-25 cm leaves in early spring. It is a beautiful sight when it densely covers the forest floor in patches of several hundred metres. Harvest before flowering, but leave at least one leaf after harvesting. It disappears after flowering. It smells and tastes like garlic. It is healthy to eat. Not to be confused with the leaves of Convallaria majalis or Colchicum autumnale, which are not edible.

@MrEpepe
@MrEpepe Жыл бұрын
@@larrymaxwell5535 The only practical difference between the two plants is their geographical distribution. Shawn gave the Latin name for the North American Allium tricoccum (ramps) plant in the video (at 0:43) which I pointed out is Allium ursinum (ramson), which is common in Europe and Asia. It decorates the forest in spring, is a fun family activity to pick, and is healthy to eat. I hope Shawn's work is successful and spreads where he has planted it.

FYI.......ACORNS are posionous to dogs Acorns contain tannins, a type of chemical that is toxic to dogs. If eaten, acorns can cause upset tummies and, though rare, they can lead to liver and kidney failure and be fatal. It is also possible for them to cause a blockage of the intestines in smaller dogs.

Shawn, I don't know how many of these comments you are able to read, but here is mine. To me, you're having to rely upon others while showing your vulnerability, rather than being self-reliant, is so much more endearing and effective. I understand living off the grid and the land. But even before your illness, you relied upon the wisdom and help of so many others. You likely could have done none of this without this channel and your family, friends and fans. As you return to health and prowess, continue to carry with you your humility, vulnerability, and that old hat, and it will serve you well, my friend.
