I had a wildfire burn thru my property 13 years ago. Out of all that sadness one beautiful thing has happened. It was tremendously difficult to clean up the acreage but the results have been outstanding! While I don’t have any of my big pines back yet, what I do have are healthy and the overall land is much healthier. The deer are especially back - it great to see the small herd I see in the mornings around the pond. I have grasses that the thick forest would not allow. It was a lot of work but well worth it. The land has much of its value back, if not more.

@@dol3980 I will be long gone before all the work really pays off. It will take at least another 30 years before it really plays out but that's OK. Some one else did it before me.... digging out the pond, clearing the cedars and generally keeping the excess fuel off the forest floor. The wind was too fast on the day of the fire to have a chance of keeping the house from burning. My neighbors concrete house burned! So we were left with ashes... but stuff was blooming out within days. Amazing to see.

WOW I am excited too Shawn! I would love to be able to do what you are doing and planning on doing with your land. If I were able to do something like that I would. I believe in saving our trees and saving all animals. Believe me when I say, I grew up hunting with my Dad and I love deer and squirrel meat. I no longer hunt but I could if I needed it to sustain me and my family. Here where I live, just outside of Houston, way overpopulated now and the builders of anything down here like to plow down every tree they see. It is sickening. Good luck with your plans and I know I will be watching. I learn something every time I watch you on both channels. I am looking for a small piece of land in Minnesota to build on and to make it into a home for me and all the animals. I love this whole idea!

@@dol3980 so what are you saying ... that some logger who makes a buck by cutting stuff down and selling it to the highest bidder ... is a better guide than someone who is trying to do right by nature ... by your comment I get the impression youre one of the people who thought animals growth hormones in our food animal wouldnt affect our kids ... yet we finished puberty mid teens while modern kids are done by 11 ... tbh a conservation officer knows more about a forest than EVERY logger ... a very different outlook on what should stay and what should go in a forest ... so sorry but trining in conservation trumps geed farming you are supporting ... and hasnt worked since the dawn of time ... our generation is rippng down the old greed houses and replacing them with compassion ... those who aint on the bus are going to be driven over by it ...

Best forestry practices are not what people think. We can't have a tree museum. Or won't have trees to replace the old ones. I need to take out some service berry trees. So the red maple and cherry can grow on my ridge. Plus a partly canopy helps the berries grow. I found fruit trees grow well on my property. I just need the winter hardy trees. I planted acorns last year. Planting American chestnut this year.

Yes scarey thoughts where tree management is concerned. Identifying and tapping before loggers come in and eradicate over populations but you should recieve a kick-back if you sign up to long term repopulation aspects, as large estates do here in Scotland. Sure it leaves scars on the land and replanting is not always the best decision, not in the first years. Cheers Shawn and Cali.

That's very similar to what I've been doing on my land: cut a ton of trees. In my case, it is an old tree farm and too much of a monoculture. I've been working on this for over a decade and the changes are amazing. So much more wildlife, growth under the trees, etc. One piece of advice: don't be afraid to cut more than you think you should.

Shawn it is very encouraging to learn of your land ethics and commitment to enhancing the wildlife habitat quality on your property. I am a retired wildlife biologist that still holds land ethics dear to my heart. I commend you for reaching out to a professional to assist you in your endeavors. Its obvious you are a student of the land with great interest in learning how best to maintain its values for the other creatures with whom we share the land. In pursuit of assessing current habitat conditions, I suggest you use google earth to view the various habitats that exist within your boundaries as compared to the same or similar communities adjacent to your boundaries. Your land is a segment of larger terrestrial and aquatic systems that surround you.

As for the loggers, many will do it for free if they can keep the trees they've cut. You can also "rent" part of the land for targeted logging*

Lessons Learned: While we did not come from a 'Garden of Eden', it seems it is a good thing to do to plant Garden's of Eden's wherever and whenever we can to provide food for insects, birds, animals, water creatures where able to, and yes, even for humans. Years ago the MNR, or through them was a forestry management program. As I recall it was for people who had 100+ acres and needed a professional to look at their lots. Like you, I know enough that there’s a lot to forest management and the pro’s are expert at these things. The Ontario MNR program was a free service, that was highly regarded helping landowners build better forests. You’ve done excellent work on the cabin and your efforts are producing excellent results. I’ve been away and hadn’t seen any of your videos since the first couple when they were first released. I’m just catching up,I saw the double -h windows, would you be able to let me know where you got them ? I'm sure your specialist will have considered this, but for what it's worth. Where I live, the tree density helps to protect against the sometimes 100-mile-an-hour winds in the autumn. Thinning, especially on the edge of open areas, often leads to catastrophic tree loss.

As someone whom has been interested in this story and the amazing skills shown I found this a curious episode. Unless this is just an unstated the desire to make logging income there was I felt some odd statements made. Natural cycles and their ecosystems are inclusive of decay, death , decomposition and a wide range of plants ,animals, fungi and insects which come and go through out that cycle. To frame this process as waste it seems to me is to potentially remove the building blocks that those more glamorous creatures, higher up the good chain need.
