I own this but have not played it or any Shiloh game. However, I so understand your points on the battle. If you take a brigade system for use with any ACW battle with strength points based on numbers of men I think you will have this problem with Shiloh. I have thought about building the battlefield and doing it with my 15mm Brigade level ACW miniatures several times and every time come to the same realization. The brigades were very big and the terrain all wooded. There is going to be little artillery fire or ranged musket fire and the CSA is just going to be bashing it's head again stiff resistance and its going to take forever to wear down those large brigades. Maybe it the surprise attack on the union camps that make the game interesting. Maybe if the units were regiments, it would be different?

Apropros of nothing - I raise my mug of tea and cheer every time Marco says 'best of both possibilities' in a vid. One day I'll switch to tequila.

I really have to try the system: it looks classical enough, but also quite accessible to new recruits. As for "senior-friendly"... you know, the paradox is that the better visibility and graphical simplicity of larger, more beautiful components can be considered "junior-friendly", too! This because younger gamers are now used to this kind of style typical of Euro and generic boardgames. That's why I consider this not just the sign of an aging wargaming public, but also of the actual expansion of wargaming to other, younger and more visually-oriented, sectors of public.

Forgive me as I'm unfamiliar with this system but the most glaring thing I see is that the counters seem to be the same color, or darn close! Where are the Blue units?

The lighting in this video makes the Union and Confederate counters look alike. However, under decent lighting, it's pretty easy to tell the difference. I do own this game.
