I tend to agree with you, but in this case, in such a tiny bathroom, vertical was the best way in my view to show the process being demonstrated.

Looks like you took hours to do what can be done in minutes with a nail gun: sister an additional, properly located stud to the side of each existing stud that is out of plumb/square.

lol Yeah, HD lumber can work in a pinch, if you get to it before customers pull the stack apart, allowing it to dry unevenly in the heated store environment. But kiln dried studs at your local contractor-focused lumber yard would be better. Learn how to read growth rings on each stick (look for quarter sawn), and tell them you want to pick the lumber yourself. Never just go and order "X" number of studs, or you'll get the crap guys like me rejected, and left neatly restacked on top.

@@sportscarclinic HD is about the only place around. Garbage wood. Once I went through literally a whole stack to get 25 or 30 straight boards, and I wasn’t as picky as I could have been.

How do you cut the taper on your shims on a table saw? You mentioned the "imperfections" so I'm guessing that you're removing the fence and freehanding it and not actually setting up a custom jig for each shim?

Correct, freehanding. With experience and precautions, I deem this to be safe enough for myself. You would need to make that judgment for yourself, obviously. It would be perhaps better to use a band saw if you have one available.

What i dont get is how to draw the line on the furring strip . What is the reference for drawing the line .

There are a couple different ways to do it. Once the Advantech pieces are fastened, you can lay a level across them. The distance the level is from each stud tells you how thick your furring strip needs to be. Take a measurement every twelve inches along the stud vertically, and there you have it. By far the easiest way to do it is with a 360 laser level. That being said, most folks don’t have one, so this is an alternative with more broadly available tools for DIY projects. Cheers!

Hold the furring strip against the plywood piece, and mark the line.
