One of these modifications increases your quality of life with the reel and the other stands to improve it’s performance. I was so turned off with the 22 alde due to the resistance of the reel when i first got it. Now it feels like it should after a few months of that lube finally getting in the right places to smooth things out. That bushing upgrade is very tempting tho. When I do a full overhaul i'll definitely upgrade that bushing.

Yea some cleaning and relubricating of the main gear definitely helps but replacing that worm gear bushing made a world of difference. It takes a bit to get to that part but it’s well worth it.

Hey! Haha yea bushings are certainly useful, they save weight don’t corrode and don’t need to be lubricated often, but bearings can be a lot better in many applications. Thanks for the kind words and cheers!!!

Another great video, I saw you mention the micro module gears. They were actually originally introduced in the Antares reel I think 2012, the Antares are general purpose bass reels. Shimano then implemented them into all their higher end reels including reels like the conquest 400 which is meant for very big fish like saltwater fish might weigh 100s of lbs. micro module gears are pretty common now in most Shimano reels. You don’t need to worry about their strength, shimano considers them just as strong as normal gears. All my Swimbait reels have micro modular gears and I’ve caught huge fish on them, never had a problem with them

That’s definitely a relief to hear. I just don’t want to be the one to be testing that out on purpose haha. The aldes main gear is super ported as well which doesn’t quite instill a ton of confidence in its strength… then again… how much force can a 5 lb fish impart of a gear? 🤔 maybe I need to find a way to test that haha gah… the rabbit hole deepens… lol

@@BFSFISHINGCHANNEL I’ve pulled in a couple big ones with the Aldebaran without any problems, my curado dc has the same type of micro gears so I assumed this would hold up the same. The thing is, even with a ported main gear, the drag being so low helps tremendously with keeping everything under the correct amount of pressure so it wouldn’t warp/get damaged. Maybe time will tell, but hopefully it stays in perfect condition.

@@hookalounge hey there! Yea my only concern with the mm gears on the alde was the softer alum compared to brass and all of the extensive porting. Additionally the gear teeth themselves are quite angled. That being said, having a low drag def helps to reduce the stresses the gear teeth have to endure and regular maintenance to keep those gear teeth clean and well lubricated will help to extend the life of them. I’m happy to hear you’ve landed some larger fish with the reel and hope it continues to perform for you! Thank you for sharing your experiences and Cheers!

Can you please show how to install the spool from stock? I'm not sure how it works with the spool tension shaft and how to replace it

Hey there potatopilot! In order to install the spool tension shaft you have to remove the spool tension knob from the reel. You insert the opposite side of the ST shaft that doesn’t have the little lip or flange first into the opening under the spool tension knob. You do need to make sure that the spring that they provide is on the ST shaft prior to install. I can definitely make a video but it might take a while just want to give you a heads up. @BFS FISHING CHANNEL that sounds like it makes sense. So you're just inserting the shaft into the hole where the spool tension knob covers? And just ensuring that the spring is attached to the shaft before putting it in? Does it matter if you put that in before or after you replace the spool? Many thanks for your reply

@@potatopilot_6784 you can add the spool tension shaft at any time and yes you are correct. It can be a bit of a pain to remove the spool tension knob when the drag star is attached to the reel but it can be done carefully. Hi. I’m thinking getting same spool. Does it actually increasing the casting distance with the light to heavy lures?

Hey thestag! I didn’t actually notice an improvement in the overall distance. What I did notice is that lower weights were easier to cast and distances were more consistent. The spool seemed to take some of finnicky casting nature of the reel imho. Hope that helps and cheers!

@@BFSFISHINGCHANNELgot it today and tried it. Feels very nice and I think it makes the reel more easy to use for my casting style. I can do kind of power-cast. I think it actually costs little bit of backlash reduction ability for me. Anyway it feels like spring is actually make it hard to feel the side to side movement of the spool. @thestag2754 hey stag! The issue you are encountering with the spool side to side movement is due to the bearings having orings in their outer housing. It causes the bearings to friction fit but also makes finding the correct amount of spool tension a bit difficult. What I like to do is tighten the tension until I am sure the spool cannot move and then slowly loosen until I can feel movement. This method is better than starting from a large amount of side to side movement and trying to reduce the amount of movement. Hope that helps and congrats on the new reel!!! Cheers my friend!

Hey there! Yea I hear ya… the dial is a pita to move and is difficult to move as well. Not really sure what the designers were thinking but the one upside is that it’s hard to move the dial 😆. I’ve got some other small gripes with the reel but overall I’d say I really enjoy using mine. Hands down the smoothest feeling reel I own. Thanks for sharing and cheers!!!

@@BFSFISHINGCHANNEL yeah that's why I tend to use the same weight lures so I don't have to fine tune to much with the dial.. plus I use mine only on salt bay and shore and I've caught some nice fish with it so far .. using a 2022 ML expride Shimano jdm rod with it and the best line I found to use for my needs is a diawa morethan 8x durasensor 15 pound.. my rod is 5 grams to 15 grams max.

@@thatonebeone 15 lb braid sounds like 0.8 goh? I’ve had really good experience with 0.6 goh for trout and even 3” dink bass lol. I haven’t quite yet used my alde for salt but maybe someday. I’ve heard good things about that expride rod but haven’t quite gotten to getting into the power bfs rod territory just yet. Maybe ajing style rods first for some surf bfs… out of curiosity have you done any maintenance on your reel? Cheers!

Hey! No I was able to apply the skin with the reel assembled. I’d apply the skin in a clean area to avoid hair and dust but since it’s vinyl you won’t see the dust/hair if it gets stuck under it. Just go slow and don’t pull the wrap too hard if you need to reposition as it’ll stretch a bit. Hope that helps and cheers!
