Shimano Alfine 11 speed oil change with Rohloff Speedhub Kit

Did this too. Never gave it a thought that it was a Rohloff kit. Changing the oil is really not needed for several years after the first time you do it unless you are in the oil selling business...

Darren Kraker Thanks for the input. No right no wrong, you may do as the instructions suggest. I prefer this way because much more cleaner. I rode the bike around Taiwan for 1250 kilometers with no issue, after the processed. Life is simple why complicate it.

The cleaning fluid also acts as a thinner for the old oil, so you should add it in before removing the old oil to get as much of the old oil and particulates out. After adding new oil, you can pull back to extract 15ml of air, this prevents the hub from being pressurized and oil seeping when the tube is removed.

The only concern I would have with using the Rohloff oil is that it might cause issues with the roller clutches in the Alfine 11 hub slipping. Since your comments below indicate that it works perfectly, it looks like there's no issue there thankfully. I stay with the official Shimano oil because the price difference is negligible. The Shimano recommended oil change doesn't involve any cleaning solution though.

For the first cleaning (do it early around 500 km rather than the 1000 km), I recommend applying the cleaning solution twice. During the initial use of the hub, small metal fragments are created. These should be removed as best as possible.

Shimano actually recommends the first oil service at 1000km. 500km may or may not be enough use to fully wear in the gear assembly. Might be good to ask Shimano as to why they recommend 1000km. I'd like to know why. :) I agree with doing the cleaning twice. Better to get rid of as much of the metal particulates as possible.

@@DorkyThorpy If interestend I used this video to disassemble and maintain my HUB: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHezpYembbOYb5Y&ab_channel=OutlawGarageKyiv It is in Ukraininan but you may just use visuals to understand the order of steps you need to perform. After maintenance, according to the video, my HUB stopped leaking. It is 2-3 weeks after maintenance now. I guess in some time it will be leaking again, but for now it is fully DRY. The main steps of the maintenance are: sealing of rubber gasket in the part with red dots on it with the use of special sealant, sealing of a big gasket which inserts inside the dust cap with left thread, and obviously correct assembly of parts together.

Sad to say the shimano oil is not as good as the Rohloff’s. Also Alfine also got leak problems because of its seals.

The instructions suggest you should add the cleaning oil directly to the dirty oil before draining? Did anyone do it this way?

It might help thin the old oil, so it comes out easier. I don't think I got all of the old oil out of mine the drain hole is too small (i think).

will it change speed automatically or do I need to do it manually? also,,, do I need to stop pedaling in order to change gear or just keep pedaling and change gear continuously?

no you have to use a shift leaver, but you can change gear when stopped unlike a derailleur

Also, be gentle when shifting. Either not pedaling OR light pressure. No hard pressure. Alfine 11 does not like it, i have learned this with experience.

Does the rohloff oil not cause problems in the shimano hub?

The shimano oil. Is not great, in that is ais very thick and gloopy, and as the drain hole is so very small. I think I didn't get all of first oil out, and then subsequently over-filled when putting new oil in. Mine is now leaking.
