They dont mention that the Alfine 11 is a pig to stop jumping. Having pushed three more gears into the same size hub tolerances as a result are lower. Trying to adjust it to stop jumping is like attempting to stand a pencil on it's point. Perfect adjustment is NOT where the yellow dot's line up. The best you do is reduce it to a minimum by trial and error which in my A11 is about once in every thirty shifts. I have a Nexus 8 speed that has never jumped.

@latinumbavariae
@latinumbavariae 3 жыл бұрын
I have used and abused the 7- and 8-gear hubs for decades and love them (except the first Inter-7 which had pathetic efficiency) but sorry Shimano the 11-gear Alfine is anything but "..fine" That hub is CRAP! 1.) The internal gearing is much too long, and it's not allowed to compensate with shorter input gearing than 38/21. So the added range compared with the 8-gear hub is wasted. You just get three additional longer gears you will almost never use instead of gears below 2m which would have been useful on uphills with touring-baggage. 2.) Quality issues! I had serious trouble with the hub skipping/slipping gears and occationally letting the pedal fall through more than a quarter turn which once lead to a painful crash with extensive grazings on my left (from upper arm to wrist and knee to ankle). This skipping is a known problem and regulary discussed in bike-forums, but totally ignored by Shimano. 3.) Quality issue, seconds: My Alfine-11 now busted a bearing in addition the the above problems, which not only made the crank drop completey but also left me with a wobbly rear wheel (a few mm play in the rear axle) barely able to keep control to stop the bike without crashing another time. I'm done whith this heap of junk and going back to 8-speed. And before you ask: YES - that hub has been serviced and adjusted correctly to specifications. This did not keep it from and destroying itself in just over 4.500km I'm thinking of personally slamming that busted Alfine-11 on one of the marketing-reps desk at Paul Lange next time I'm in Stuttgart.

Thank you for your comment. My Alfine-11 is total loss, even I expect, with only view kilometers. Maybe 2-4000. (Bought the bike used) But failed to maintain it properly. Reading, if again investing in Alfine-11 makes sense, or if I should switch to Alfine-8. I think, you helped me. @latinumbavariae
@latinumbavariae 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielbieling Andreas Oehler did some efiiciency-measurements on the most common hubgears, and comes to the conclusion that the NuVinci is not the best choice strong riders. Not surprising since the Nuvinci, like most CVT, relys on oilshear for transmitting forces thus allowing slippage and more so with higher loads. Assuming that you are German too you can read his article at: fahrradzukunft.de/17/wirkungsgradmessungen-an-nabenschaltungen-2/ Don't get too excited about the comparison between the Alfine-8 and Alfine-11. For me the 8-speed always feels more efficient than the 11-speed, which may be since I used the 8-Speed with 42/24 primary gearing which is more efficient than the 38/21 I had to use on the 11. Yes those 3 teeth between 21 and 24 make a difference. Efficiency in bicycle chaindrive varies with the size of the sprockets. Below 20t every tooth hurts, above 40t the difference of +/- 4t is almost unmeasurable.
@danielbieling

@@latinumbavariae Thanks so much! I read this article, very interesting. Okay, no alfine-11, no nuvinci. In this chart, the Alfine 8 looks not very efficient, too. But you mentioned, that it should not worry me. Thanks. Left is: Kettenschaltung or Alfine-8. Tending to Alfine-8.

Tiptronic gear shifting for your bike! Not particularly interested in it myself but I can see why it would be perfect for lots of people. I can just imagine the torrent of outrage if a rumour about UCI testing started. Strokes all 'round for the 'purists'. Joking aside this would be a perfect system on a general use or commuter bike. I wonder how much of a debt this system owes to the Sturmey Archer stuff, which apparently is still being produced, somewhere.

No, there are steel races inside the aluminum hub shell. All the bearings are exclusively steel-on-steel. I have a 1st generation Nexus 8 on a 13-year old bike I bought with a ton of miles; just took it apart to clean and lube and there's almost no wear to be seen. It's far less susceptible to weather than any derailleur setup, and shifts faster too. For a bike you'd rather ride than fiddle with, the 8-speed is dope; reputedly the 11 is more fragile and finicky.
