Metanium MGL is the best reel ever made imo. Even with its great performance, the thing that mosts stands out to me is the fact it is still fishing like when I first got it over a year ago. Wish it had bigger knobs like a Curado tho

Very informative video. The Antares was really gonna have to blow the metanium mgl out in casting for me to go to a heavier reel w/o a 8 gear ratio. The met mgl under $300 is the best high end valued reel on the market

No kidding. Its supposed to be a light weight casting reel. The metanium is a better all around reel. The antares was built to throw smaller weights. So it wins. Obviously..

Wished shinano would release something in the size of the Antares but with the build, quality, and price point of the Metanium. Love my Metaniums, but they're not the most palmable size for smaller hands. What makes it bareable is that it's really light.

Which one is stronger? I live in northern Michigan and I've caught 2 Muskies that were about 2-8 pounds and I don't think my quantum Traxx spinning reel is going to make it to 8 years of use lmao. I'm trying to catch bass but Muskie aren't playing around this year. I hope on my 21st birthday I actually get a bass lol.

Just curious but how do reel companies base their gear ratio on...is it on a starting fill up of line or mid full or full of line...or does it mater.

Bella Wright the gear ratio is a fixed value and represents the number of times the spool turns for every 1 turn of the handle. For example, an 8:1 ratio reel will have 8 spool rotations per 1 handle rotation. The only variable is the line inches per turn. This is variable on the total diameter of the spool including the line. With a full spool of line you will achieve maximum inches of line retrieve , and diminishes as your line runs to empty on the spool

I think a reel is much more then casting distance. How does it take on a fish max drag how durable is it etc. I would think in the long run the antares would last longer

The Reel Test, Any intent to get a line counter for the rod for on the water tests. It would take out the human element and give us stat freaks real numbers to work with. I am interested in knowing if the on the water numbers match the range numbers or if they are even close.

Line counters are inaccurate due to the arc of the cast letting out more line than how far the lure actually went. Trust me I WISH I could use a line counter when doing the field testing because it would save me alot of time and energy especially in the heat of summer.

Telemark Mann yeah bro line counters are not accurate for measuring casting distance. It counts the amount of line that came off the reel, not the actual length of the cast.

THE REEL TEST you are the the counters isn’t any good for that, I do use them when spooling line on my reels from my bulk spools so I know how much is left after each spooling!

Metal dampening vibration? I’m not 100% on that one. The vibration from a cast and a retrieve being a compression wave, I’m pretty sure metal components transmit compression waves more efficiently than plastic parts.

Maybe you should try skipping and flipping!!! Antares are way better. The Antares also kick ass on 1 to 2 oz swimbaits. Met is lighter and a little bit more comfortable.

OK, here is my question, if your Metanium MGL had the 150 size spool instead of the JDM 70 size spool, how do you think it might have affected the results? I am thinking of getting a Metanium MGL, the JDM price is so God damn attractive at US$293 (it used to be US$280 only when the exchange rate was better), but for my kind of fishing, I would spool myself on the 70 size spool and will eventually have to upgrade it to the 150. The other thing is I almost forgot the Metanium was made of magnesium, but somehow in the Japanese catalogue it has been given a "saltwater OK" icon while the Antares only has the "freshwater" icon. I wonder why that is. Either way, the Metanium MGL is so much lighter, it will have to be so much nicer to fish with.

Id say so, Im sure it would add more than a few grams of line weight with that 150 spool and for damn sure 2 oz of reel weight makes a difference in fishing ... once youve experienced light reels its a shock to go back to a heavier set up. Im sure Ill pick up another 70 MGL if a new one gets announced next year.

Alex Fu buy the jdm model and then spend 50 dollars on a 150 size spool and now you have 2 spools cheaper than buy the US version

If you go to Hedgehog Studio for example, that spool is a stock Shimano Yumeya 16 Metanium MGL 150 Deep Spool and it goes for US$118.80 before shipping. So, when you add everything up, it will probably be more than the recommended US retail of US$420.

THE REEL TEST I can order it for inside the US straight from the manufacturer (a lot more convenient) and I wouldn’t consider high dollar by any means(even though it looks and feels like it is) I think it’s a badass rod I got the medium light bfs corzza (1/8-3/8) last Christmas and paired it with the Curado 70, it’s my all time favorite set up I think it is the the only mid to high end bait finesse rod sold and shipped in the US too

Have you ever thought of testing different reel models ability to make pitch casts? I am curious to see how magnetic brakes and friction brake systems compare when spool speeds are low. It would be interesting to see if lightweight spools perform better than heavier spools for pitch casting. Pitch casts provide a way to fish heavy cover, docks, weed and lily pad mats effectively by placing lures tight to cover without making any or only a slight disturbance entering the water. This lure presentation is popular for Bass and Trout fishing applications. Fishing small trout streams, this presentation is an essential method of casting. And: have you any intent in the future to test larger size reels use for casting large swimbaits and Musky lures?

You were throwing too light of baits the Antares is designed for max distance 1/2 and above. Not 1/4oz , you’re not realistic with these videos!!!!!
