I’m actually excited to see this. I ordered the Shimano Essence DC SS. And the only reason I even got the gonads to buy a baitcaster is because of your channel bro. I just wanted say thank you for putting me on to Shimano. I've always struggled between them and Daiwa. I never really knew what I wanted in a reel until I started watching your reviews. You get such a better understanding of what you get. I've become kind of a fiend for high end Shimano reels. I just got into bait finesse and my first reel is going to be the Calcutta Conquest BFS HG. I got it in the mail and it already feels great. I can't wait to fish it.

The hollow feel you talked about I felt the same way. I used my metanium 13-16 for jigs exclusively for that reason. I could feel light strikes in the reel while palming. I tried to explain it to my friends and cousin he told me I was on crack. Lol

I got mine in a couple weeks ago and have finally put enough time on it to have an opinion. This is, by a wide margin, the quickest, most free casting reel I’ve ever thrown. Maybe they figured out how to get more out of the Antares but I wouldn’t know, really...I like lightweight, magnesium reels. Anyone who picks this up, be careful in the beginning and use a conservative brake setting until the line is broken into the spool and you’re used to the reel. You give the rod a little flick and ZOOM...your bait is already there. Until you’re used to it, you could be in for a couple of loops. Other than that, it MIGHT be the greatest reel I’ve ever fished. The retrieve is basically nonexistent...if I didn’t know what was in it, I’d never guess that it was gearing. It feels almost liquid. The aldebaran still holds my number one spot for ergonomic reasons and because it’s the reel that always accompanies my biggest confidence baits....flukes, finesse jigs, etc. But this is a better reel, objectively. The only thing we’ll have to wait on is long term durability. Once I swapped out the aluminum gears in my older metaniums, they stayed rock solid so I’m not worried about that. It’s just to early to say for sure. Killer, world class, possibly the best bass reel ever built from a standpoint of practicality and feel. I don’t know how, in a billion years, Daiwa or Abu are going to answer this one...

The Steez is right there with it. If you have never used a Steez they are phenomenal. My Steez is my favorite bait caster but I plan on getting a Metanium or Anatares next.

I have the 16MGL and I would say it casts further than the 20B by 3-4 feet, but my 20B will be my frog/jig reel and I don’t really need to worry about casting distance.

I prefer the 20’ over the 16’ because it fits my hand better and it’s smoother imo. The solid core body does feel more sensitive. The 16’ will cast farther than the 20’ imo but it’s not a night and day difference. The feel, fit, and smoothness won me over so I sold off most of my older Met MGL’s.

Nice testing! I just got back from fishing. Mostly crappies, 2 bass, and a golden shiner. One of the crappies was my PB. It had to be pushing 2 pounds! I landed it on the kuying teton 552SUL, with the Revo ALC BF7, using trout magnets and a weighted cigar float. I did catch a couple with the Scorpion BFS +Micro series 5'6 Light, and one of my homemade spinner baits, and a jig + plastic someone left on the ground. I'm still so hyped about that huge crappie!

as with any reel into the wind you would have to crank the brakes up very high and use a side arm cast if you can but I dont think any reels can touch DC reels into the wind.

My 7'4 MH/fast action Dobyns Xtasy rod + Antares 70 can cast weightless Senko 3/0 hook as far as my 3/4 oz football jig with craw trailer. Antares is a beast of a reel, fun to see it match up against the new metanium

i been waited for this duel. thank you for the video!. However, i think you data inaccurate. The rod on the 16 Met is 4 inches shorter. Plus you different lure on both reel(yet they same weight ) but different shape will cast differently (different profile will have vary wind resistant). No doubt new one will outcast , but dramatically different that i don't think so

If you set the brakes to 80% you wont need to use your thumb until the lure hits the water if your spool tension is set "loose"

Finally got mine this week and tested it today. Honestly, it just feels like an Antares 2019. Doesn't really surprise me at all. They're the same internally, minus the spool sizes. The only thing is, I'm a weird person and prefer all metal reels as I believe it transfers vibrations to the palm way better than mag reels, for that purpose the Antares edges it out....but for way more cost lmao for such a minor thing. Both reels cast amazing, easily the best casting reels I own, simple flick of the wrist will send a lure 100 feet, good cast 150+ easy. However, when it comes to smoothness, the Calcutta Conquest has them beat easily. Those reels are buttery, buttery smooth, Stella level of smoothness, but certainly are not as good of a caster as the Antares 2019 and Met 2020.

I really want to know if the new metanium has a finish that is more durable. That is my only gripe with the previous metanium. I take really good care of my gear so it made me sick when my previous model chipped so easily. I want to get one or more but im not gonna spring for em until I know the answer to this question. If they haven't fixed the problem ill stick with the chronach mgl.

Not having cleaned the 16 mgl 4 years can impact everything greatly no matter how gentle you are on gear. I notice a difference in performance if I clean a reel and fish it 2-3 times a week for a month or two. I think you should find one that is new or at least clean yours and compare again. But if the new met is anything like the bantam, which it basically is, it really could just be better than the older version.

Man I’m confused about this reel. So, I bought the metanium 150 b but my knob ends are different. It has the knob ends of the last model and a little larger knobs than the Chronarch with the same round ends but yours has the slanted knob ends like the curado mgl 70 k...I was concerned about this since I ordered it on Amazon from some random tackle shop so I went to a big box store and looked at the exact same model I have and they are identical (I bought it too 🤦🏻‍♂️) so I’m wondering what the deal is and why they’ve changed the knobs back to the old metanium knobs. Any answers on this?

You got the USA model which has the 150 spool and bigger knobs and different knob in caps the JDM model has a 100 spool with smaller knobs and different knob incaps

@@THEREELTEST yes...of course. i have a jdm chronarch mgl and it's a true finesse handle and knobs as compared to something like a US SLX DC. It appears your jdm metanium2020 in the video looked like it has a larger handle and knobs than a jdm chronarch mgl. I actually replaced my assembly on my chronarch mgl with the SLX XT assembly that has the chrome knob plates. I believe the US version of the chronarch mgl is a 90mm handle vs what appears to be an 85mm or less on the jdm. My hope was for this metanium mgl 2020 jdm to have a 90mm handle and larger knobs.

Both are very good reels, the Aldebaran is meant for light finesse fishing. If you’re looking for an all around reel I’d recommend the metanium.

@@johnmcintrye7718 right on. I have a JDM on its way now from Japan. It was between this and the SLX 70 DC. A DC reel would be slick but for less than 100 more one can get the Met (higher end). I’m really looking forward to trying it.

@@stepheno.2730 I can't speak on the JDM SLX, but my brother has the SLX DC from Shimano and its no slouch, but fishing with the Met is an entirely different experience American or JDM, it's smoother than an honest man deserves and can cast tiny lures far as hell. Im using it rn under the lights in the Bay, and caught two Spec trout in my first 25 mins lol! On a 1/8th oz jig head and Down South Lure / white. Though I wouldn't use it in salt like me unless you take your reel apart when u get home.. Plus wipe it down with a cold damp cloth with fresh water after fishing immediately

Shane J McNair I know you’re joking but honestly dude...go for a 16 met or a 13 met. My 13 met is STILL one of my favorite reels. It’s on par with the 16 in basically every way except for maybe a bit of a distance deficit. If you play your cards right, you can get a 13 met PLUS the brass gear upgrade for well under $200.

@@manifestgtr I am just getting an almost brand new 2016 very soon, and I am excited, I know the Met2020 is the new boy in town, but the fact that they shorten the distance between spool and line guide worries me. Everyone that has it, says it's not a problem, accuracy is spot on, distance amazing, feel is smooth etc. but in the same time I know people that have the 2016 and they are not giving up on it.

@@RazvanStefan You’ll like the 16 met. One thing they really have over the 20 is their ergonomics. The 20 is great and it’s what I keep on my conquest 844 for general purpose jigging but the 13/16 form factor is incredibly comfortable...more comfortable than the 20. As far as standard sized reels go, they’re easily my favorite in terms of ergonomics and their ability to hang with the smaller reels (aldebaran, curado 70, etc) on a long day.
