Thanks dennis for responding back that was heart felt im glad you care,im sure you will have the best videos out there.this reel that i have waas giving to me ,it just has cardiff on it ,i think it is a little differnt then the one you showed ,i had some parts that was laying loose in side just needed to see how they fit,for exsampel the two springs you put in,i figured they went on the two post sticking up ,but on top of that i have a plastic part thats on top of springs,also have two little copper washers dont know where they go..i got every thing working except free spooling. should of watch your film befor tearing it apart it would of help.

Great Video for servicing this reel. I just rebuilt mine and installed new ceramic bearings and carbontex drag washers. I don't know if it's common, however when tightening the drag down as far as possible you can still pull line of the reel. Is this common with these type of Shimano reels?

OK - do you have braid on the spool? Is it backed with monofilament before adding the braid? You may have a condition called braid slip. If the reel was not backed, try removing the braid, adding about 15 years of mono and then reinstalling the line. That will fix the slip. If that is not the case, sometimes the Carbontex washers are thinner that the originals and the max adjustment does not tighten down the washer enough. In that case, adding a shim washer to the drag stash will fit the issue - Dennis

Would you recommend the Cardiff 301 paired with St. CROIX Triumph 7'6" mh musky rod. Throwing 3/4 Oz musky spinners, small cowgirls, 5 to 6 inch Kietechs. Would you remove the levelwind?

That set up sounds like a good set up. I do not recommend taking the level wind feature off. I suggest that you find a reel that is a non-level-wind reel as the alternative. If you do remove the level wind feature, make sure to remove the gears that drive it in addition to pulling the line guide and pawl. - Dennis

My response prior; I have ruled out the line slipping on spool. Where would I get the shims you refer to and where in the drag stack should or would they be placed. Thanx again..

The part would be BNT0015 a drag spring washer. It would go on top of the A/R collar sleeve. You can try the Shimano parts resellers like Platinum parts in Tampa or Southwesternparts.com in Dallas. They may not be available due to age. A trip to your local hardware store my tied a flat washer of similar size to help you in lieu of finding an original replacement - Dennis

@2ndChance Tackle.. Replaced the BNT0015's. Found them @ eReplacement parts. The old ones did not look bad, however they evidently were. Any time some one rebuilds the drag, in my opinion, these should be replaced. Make sure the concave side of these face each other!! @@2ndChanceTackle..

I’m having a issue with my clutch bar, it seems to have fell out of place and when I disassembled I put the washer back and it still falls out

These drags are the harder teflon type drags and do not need the drag grease. You can use it, but it is not necessary. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Is the tear down the same for the original all gold Cardiff? Bought a 200 for $5. Love it for bay fishing and light rock fishing. Just needs a power handle and new drags.

Yes - the tear down should be the same. As always, I encourage you to get the expanded schematic to verify and to take pictures along the way so that you know the sequence and placement for the parts. Thanks for asking - Dennis

My anti reverse cog on my Cardiff 400 is making a ticking sound while reeling but if I hold the reel upside down the ticking goes away. Any ideas on a fix for this? Please help.

The problem you are describing usually involves the spool. It the adjustment set properly? A quick test is to remove the spool and reassemble the reel without it. Does the problem go away or remain? If it is still there, something is loose in the reel. If it goes away, then the spool needs to be adjusted to reduce the slack. Let me know the results of your trial. - Dennis

I can do that, but they either work, or they don't. If you. Many are worn click tongues that are pressed on and cannot be easily or economically replaced. The function is not critical to the reel, so most folks et it go if it is frozen or rusted or worn. - Dennis
