Hey Dennis quick question for ya! I have a Castaic 201sf and it seems very similar to this reel build wise. When I turn the handle fast and then stop suddenly and almost try to reel in reverse the reel makes this weird loud almost clicking sound. It also happens randomly sometimes when I try to cast, loud clicking, spool dramatically slows down, even had a bait break off. I’ve been working on it for weeks and can’t figure it out. I was thinking the anti reverse bearing maybe? I ordered one, but I’m not sure. Pinion gear also has a lot of side to side play in it was wondering if the spool was slipping out of that or the yoke, or if the gears were slipping…? I’m so lost 🤦🏻♂️😂 If you have any thoughts I’d really really appreciate it. Thanks so much. Really appreciate your vids! 🤙🏽
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
I think you have a problem that is not a problem. This happens on the Penn 975 series as well. The cause is most likely that the spool brakes are not braking fast enough and that is because of the way you are testing. They were not designed to hold that level of force. - Dennis
@WhereWeWild Жыл бұрын
@@2ndChanceTackle Interesting. All my other reels don’t do that at all, but obviously this one is way older. Not even that much force either just reeling fast and stop. And it clicks for an extra second or two. But wonder why would it happen when trying to cast? That’s just a normal function the reel should handle 🤷🏻♂️ It also happens when I just reel forward fast. Also it only happens with the spool in, and it’s worse with the less spool tension I have on. Just to give you more clues haha maybe I’ll try and email you a video clip of it so you can hear it! I really don’t want to give up on the reel, when it works correctly it casts so far! 🤦🏻♂️😂

@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
Go make them. Find a coffee stir straw or the plastic tube from a spray can like WD40 and pick one that fits snug. All you need to do then it to trim it to size. The odds are good that it will work fine - Dennis

What screw driver did you use to take the handle off to get to the 10mm nut? Just picked up the reel and a fenwick golden wing rods gw 76ch-t pole for 20 bucks.

That's quite a deal. The Fenwick rod is easily worth the price paid. I used a #1 Phillips head screwdriver to take the cap off - Dennis

I know this is a older video but is very helpful. The reel you are working on is the B Model. The A Model has a flipping switch and take down screws & regular screws. It doesn't have the easy acces to the spool like yours in the video. The take down screws I belive are to remove the left side of the reel to acces the spool ? My concern is the flipping lever . Should I leave the lever switch attached . Or should I remove the lever Switch before I separate the case half ? I would appreciate any thoughts on this model .
@2ndChanceTackle10 ай бұрын
If the flipping lever is an arm on the side plate near the spool adjuster, then you need to remove it in order to not disturb the cam and spring during removal. If you left it attached, it would pill those parts off of the inner gear assembly and make a mess. You can safely remove the case once the flipper arm is detached. It will still be helpful to make sure the cam is not stuck in the case, so remove the case slowly, and if you like, use a screwdriver to hold the flip came down, while you pull up on the case - Dennis
@peterschafer56425 жыл бұрын
@laslider you are absolutely right! But the main difference in my opinion is the magnetic brake of the A-Series (as seen in the schematic) and the centrifugal brake of the B-Series (the then new VBS system - as seen when Dennis opens the palmside). The B-Series was introduced sometime in the mid 90th and was listed in the European catalog even in 2004.

Hello I have 2 very similar reels to this the only difference is they're the Bantam Citica CI-200's they have a bearing or 2 less than the curado. Instead having bushings in certain places on the spool. How would you go about lubricating those? With my other reels I can just give them a drop of oil but I'm not sure on these. Thanks!
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
Once you remove the non-gear side plate, you can remove the spool and oil the bearings or bushings - Dennis
@stevenpickard27154 жыл бұрын
@@2ndChanceTackle I knew how to do that I just wasn't sure what to actually oil on the bushing haha. Since it's just a round piece of plastic basically. And thanks for the reply!
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Plastic is a petrochemical and you don't need to do anything with it, which is probably why the manufacturer chose it. You can put grease on it as it won't clog anything and will last longer than oil - Dennis

@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
If you have fishing to do, put the reel in a clean bucket filled with fresh tap water and let is sit overnight, You can then oil it. If you are hearing any noises or the reel is sluggish, then you should take it apart and do a full cleaning and re-lube. You did not say how long it was in. A quick dip, - oK. It it hit the muddy bottom and came up ugly, best to go with the preventative full cleaning right away - Dennis

Even in the high end reels the Idle gears have been made out of plastic for years and they never break, the line guide does not create enough friction to do any damage.
