What a great video. Thank you! I’ve been clipless forever on my road bike but too scared to try on my mountain bike because of how often I need to throw a foot out there to avoid falling. This video just gave me the courage to try.

Just did my first ride on clipless Shimano M530 pedals yesterday, and opted for the SH56 cleats. No problems at all, and was really impressed with the control these seemed to give me - I felt way more "at one" with the bike than I ever did with the old toe cages. Will definitely go with a set of clipless pedals for my new road bike.

Bought some clipless shoes and cleats and just had real problems clipping out, almost had a nasty accident because I just didn't have the strength in my ankle to get out. Was about to put flats back on the bike and found your post. I had no idea "Multi direction" cleats even existed. Well done sir, my new cleats should arrive in a few days. I'm looking at getting some clipless pedals and now seeing how the multi release cleat really works I'm really leaning towards getting that style cleat and going with some clipless pedals in the near future. Thanks for the excellent explanation and showing how they really work. Takes all the guess work out of for me.

Thank you so much. I am 66 and ride for transportation maybe 300 says a year. I went to one-sided clipless pedals because of my tendency to get my foot stuck when I am cut off by cars. I clip out when in questionable situations. I have fallen more than once because of unexpected hazards. I had no idea about these. I am getting some immediately. Favorite and Subbed. Edit: My local bicycle shop had these in stock. I just got a pair and rode home with them. They rock for my laid back style. Love 'em.

My wife and I both ride road bikes with regular clipless pedals (original Look/Keo three-hole plastic cleats). My daughter's Trek bike came with Shimano PD-A530 and we've been trying to sort out bike shoes for here. She needs a wide footbed and Serfas seems to be really good that way. Your video made me feel that, with theses cleats, she could get comfortable keeping the same pedals and trying this all out....thanks for the information.

I’m newish to cleats, i.e. I knew/know next to nothing about cleats. I have Shimano sandals which for some reason have SM51 cleats, and a pair of Bontrager shoes which have SM56 cleats. I have absolutely no idea how come I’ve ended up with the different cleats, likely as not it’s down to my beginners lack of knowledge. I’ve struggled along with the difference/difficulty, but now, having watched your video I fully understood why my sandals were more difficult to disengage than the shoes. I’ve recently swapped out the SM51 for new SM56, positive result, I now feel more confident whatever footwear I have on. Thank you for making my cycling even more enjoyable!

Great video👍 I been riding Shimano SPD pedals since they were invented. Been using multi release since they available. The SH 56 M cleat is my go to cleat on my XC/Trail bikes. Yes I have pre-released but that has not caused a fall. I do use the SH 51 cleat on my road and gravel bike because it comes with the peddle and Clicking out on non technical terrain is second nature after 25 years. I feel uncomfortable on flat peddles not being connected and slipping off.

Clint, yes it's an older video but a great one! I've ridden clipless pedals since the late 80s but nerve damage in my right ankle makes trying to unclip quickly nearly impossible when a fast dab is required. I can't tell you how many times I have had the dreaded falling over to the right side in technical terrain and this has definitely held me back. After discovering your channel, I bought a 2018 Giant Trance Advanced 1 and a set of the new Saint M-820 pedals for their wider platform. This package is amazing and has far more capability than I will ever use but the MH-51s, even on their lightest setting, still leave me trapped in. Watching this video has shown me there is hope so I just placed an order for the MH-56s. If they are even a fraction of as good as they were in your video, my riding will be completely transformed for the better. Thank you for the great work you are doing as it is a great service and highly entertaining!

I have clipless road pedals on my road bike on a turbo trainer, but I was afraid, like many people who've not used clipless on MTB, that I'd fall over. My wife has been running clipless pedals on her comfort bike for the increased power efficiency, and I was finally convinced to give a set of MTB clipess pedals a try. I got a set of XTR M9020s with a pair of shoes and these multi-directional release cleats, and I can't believe how easy and fast it is to clip out. Well done, Mr. Gibbs, and many thanks for the capital advise!

Hey Clint, thanks for the video explanation. I'm an experienced rider, been using spd shoes/pedals since 2008 and I ride technical XC/trail on a hardtail. I do swap my spd's for flats for a few weeks every year in order to keep my technique fresh (it keeps bad habits away). One of the reasons I generally prefer riding clipped in, is that rough descents on a hardtail can be very bumpy, so clipless gives me extra confidence that I'm not gonna lose a pedal unintensionally. I never unclip to ride rough sections and never had a problem getting a foot out when I need to. Now, my well aged one way release cleats are kinda worn and I've lately had a couple of unwanted pedal releases, one of which resulted in a high speed crash (no injuries though). A friend has given me a pair of brand new multi release cleats, still in the original packaging. I'm afraid that these will unclip way too easily as I'm used to pull up heavily during uphill obstacles and tech climbs. I'd also prefer to avoid further involuntary releases while going downhill maxed out. My pedals are already set to the tightest setting. Given thet you've tried both, wht do you reccommend? thanks in advance

I just out these cleats on my riding shoes. They work awesome! I'm not sure how because they look and are about the same size and shape as the other SPD cleat. I went on a 25 mile ride and made a point to ride through anything that I thought would break these cleats free. Not once did they break free without me doing it intentionally. I had a panic moment where I need to get out fast and these thing performed as stated by Clint. I have a whole new confidence in riding with My cleats now. Awesome product and I'm amazed that more people don't know about them. Thanks for the information Clint

Thank you! I've used toe clips for the past 15 years. I never had any issues but I do keep them a bit loose. My foot has never slipped forward or sideways but I can pull my foot out very quickly if needed. I just got a new bike and have been thinking about transitioning to clipless. I might just give these a try.

Well thank you for this video and so kind and simple explanation. Few days ago I ordered Shimano PD-M520 clipless pedals and additional set of cleats SM-SH56 for me as a begginer in SPD pedals. Today I bought Cube MTB SPD shoes and I like they a lot, they fit me perfectly and can’t wait for my pedals and cleats to come to try them. And thank you for explanining clipless termin, I was thinking kust you mention, why on the Earth they call it clipless if it clips in and out 😂 Big like and subscribe. Thank you for the excellent comparison! I've had good luck with the 51's unclipping as needed, even during some bad crashes they have managed to disconnect without breaking my ankles. After watching your video I think I have too much angular movement in my pedal stroke to run the 56's without unintentionally unclipping.

I've purchased and started riding clipless pedals (Shimano PD-T8000) a couple of months ago. Luckily for me they came with SM-SH56 multirealease cleats as I had no idea that such cleats even exist. These cleats saved me from falling twice already. Both times there were situations when I did not anticipate sudden stop and was not prepared to clip out.

Thanks, great video, it cleared up a lot of questions for me. This past Saturday I was negotiating some pedestrians and cyclist and I had to come to an abrupt stop. I could not get out of my right side pedal Shimano A530L pedal on time and fell over. The last body part to hit the ground was my helmeted head and except for some minor scrapes I did not get hurt. I am not sure how to adjust the tension on the pedals.

I lost my foot in a vehicular accident 10mo. ago and ride with a prosthetic lower leg/foot now. Of course it's more difficult to clip out now with no ankle movement and I needed a better option. Then I remembered these - nice to see them demonstrated. Was actually thinking about getting magnetic pedals but then I looked at their price and their weight - both too much! A simple cleat change should do the trick and I get to keep my old pedals and shoes - perfect!

After 3 and half years with clipless pedals and sh51 cleats, I finally bought the more advanced sh56 cleats. I have only tried them on trainer, I think I can use them with my pd-m530 pedals, but on my newer pd-m520 pedals it would be too dangerous, since m520 pedals are a bit too narrow. I like to have just little spring tension. I fear it can unclip and feet fall of the pedal to side.. or on raff road. or smth.. and if it falls off when out of saddle, then it won't be nice... worse than all the slow speed falls I've had because could not unclip left foot, when falling to left. But I use platforms now for a while. Won't use new cleats for riding yet, because I need to give rest for my left knee to heal from the falls with clipless pedals.. Don't want the wound break again. And it's winter now, the snow can froze into ice under shoe sole and cleat and then, maybe even with sh56 cleats I can have trouble to clip in and out.. And weirdly, the only reason why it dook so long for me to buy the sh56 cleats, was that I was worried that pedals wear off much faster with these cleats, since there's smaller contact area with the "lips" of pedal binding mechanism.. and if the cleat moves against them.. it will wear them.. But now after injuring my knee twice on same spot, I realized that my true choices are that I either throw the pedals and shoes away, or I actually use them until they wear out..
