I, generally, use a ratcheting, interchangeable regular-sized screwdriver for the initial loosening of screws. Here's a link to the brand I use:

Get some additional, varying sizes Flathead and Phillips bits while you're at it.
The adjustable wrenches I use (instead of hex nut wrenches) are Husky, but these (with the red insert) work very well... 6-inch will be used the most:

have you ever considered doing teardowns and reviews on new reels, and giving your opinions on what to buy? I would guess you have seen it all, and would have a good idea about which features, and materials are good, and which ones break down. There seems to be a gap in the market so to speak... and I would definitely love to hear your thoughts and recommendations on various products. Cheers from Canada!

Cheers! I have seen many things, but I'm far from an engineer. The truth is, I like A LOT reels.... even the inexpensive ones. You can search for tackle advisors here on KZbin.... he used to do this..... not sure if he still does. Maybe, I'll start a series on that one day

Looks like the worm shaft and lack of a seal bearing is the weak link in this design. Always disappointing to see crusty bearings in an area that receives routine water intrusion. Also, IMO too many small parts for a reel used in salt water.
