Wow. That was cool. My cousin studies Hung Gar. He showed me a little of it, a while back. It's a style that can give you a certain type of strong build. Never seen really good demonstrations of form application. This was well done. I know Marc Singer studied Hung Gar, as he was doing movies like 'the Beast Master.' I remember seeing a flyer at a martial arts school. He was going to do a demonstration with a lot of well known kung fu people near San Francisco. The 5 animals, in Hung Gar, is this cool idea for a martial arts system. From what I've heard, one animal is for developing bone strength, one is for like strong tendon, another is into flesh strength. The training is very exact in what it tries to give the practitioner.
@MichaelDurbin-qx4vr6 ай бұрын
Yes, Marc Singer did study Hung Ga Kuen at the Seattle Kung Fu Club. He also worked out at the South Bay Kung Fu Club in the Los Angeles area with Sifu Richard Cunningham (a senior student from Seattle Kung Fu Club). I very much like the videos I’ve seen so far of Sifu Kanishka. If only this sort of information sharing was around when I was a boy! Unfortunately, everything back then was regarded as a closely-kept secret, such that even “advanced” practitioners might not really understand or be able to implement the forms that they had been taught.

About time a Kung Fu instructor is able to show usable techniques. Awesome
@HermesTTT4 ай бұрын
Usable against someone NOT trying to hit you. Correct! The clearest example is at 3:25 of this video. Slow it down to 0.25x speed, if you need to. 😉 I am not saying Kung Fu is completely useless, just the way it is trained for real world applications. At some point you have to “forget” what you have learned and allow your drills/sets/forms to express themselves instinctively, whilst facing realistic pressure. Only then will you realise your good and bad habits. This ABCD approach is setting students up for failure!

This guy was dropping gems the whole time. Of course there is the obvious stuff he was showing, but you have to listen to the minor notes and almost self commentary he was doing to put it all together. Examples: "people don't do finger tip push ups anymore." and my favorite, "Learn the form, strengthen the body, and then learn how to use it." I know kung fu and karate are cousins, but this is like kata, hojo undo, and bunkai. The form, the strengthening exercises that make you able to apply the techniques of the form, and the breakdown of the form into pieces that you can use. "There are no bad martial arts only bad practitioners." Great video.

Very nice, Exactly what I was looking for. Too often you see slow motion replays of “What if“ situations with any martial art really, Whether it be eastern or european, Unarmed or with a weapon, But this is actually a great demonstration of the art against an unwilling target. Very realistic, Thank you.

Dear Sifu Kanishka, What I appreciate is your devotion and true enthusiasm to show it as best as possible. Yet small pieces of methodology could do a better job: Before introducing Hung-gar, no the technique but principleoor range of githing would be more infromative, especially to a beginner. I have once heard a great truth of Martial arts that members of schools do not like to mention, as it reveals the possibilities and the limitations of their styles : Range arrenges things in order. Another aspect , you started , in my opinion, from medium distance, for self defence puproses, let me recommend from the Long distance, as I have already written to you. But, I really appreciate your , as recently dealing with all the three distances. - Long distance is the only one offering escape fro a real beginner. The closer you are, the more experience you need! where one has to watch the distance, - At the medium distance, as you put it right, the Centerline is to be watched. -At short distance - in my experiecne one is simply a victim or survives if he/she makes the first move. - either to parry, , or step , duck or hit . When Ia was in an instructor training course som 3 or 4 decades ago, already then it was taught taht.: Reaction time is cca 0,2 sec, while hitting time is shorter o,125-0,5 Seconds. Is there any need for close range blocks? No, Not really. The only one, who survive are those with the so called Multisignal level of percetion- refer to Novák and Špička Czech self -defence theory. Dear Sifu, I was writing you so long out of respect. Acdpt my apology for taking your time, but the LD-MD SD line is a thing I will never decline. Bewst regards. Paul, 66,retired instructor of Goju-ryu Karate.

I love hung gar...if you can get such complicated movements out in a real life attack...then you're an awesome master! I do wing chun...what has helped me survive were the principles and not the techniques....the techniques went out the door with my adrenaline dump...the principles of movements and constant pressure worked best...well for me anyway....ground fighting?? Now that's another animal...no disrespect....this Sifu seems very knowledgeable!

Sifu , I like to learn martial art, but I have heard that muay thai is more helpful for actual combat , since it is used for the ring. Is your Kung fu can be used on the ring and real combat?
@leekelley4701 Жыл бұрын
Fighting in a ring is not actual combat, it is a sport. Most all of these techniques are not used in sport fighting, breaking someone's leg is super brutal and super cruel and should only be done in combat. Unless you think like Jon Jones, anything to win mentality. Also in the street, you can wrist control but not with kickboxing gloves. Same with a snake strike to the eyes and such. Imo mui Tai is great for sport or mma, but hung gar was made in and for the streets.

I like a lot of this, it feels pretty solid and you're clearly comfortable with more intense drilling at the very least, but I wanted to raise an issue with the kicks and armlock-style movements. Are you really that confident those techniques would reliably break a limb? I find it more likely they're intended to hurt and move a person, setting up follow-ups. To forestall the obvious objections, I acknowledge that those movements could certainly break someone's leg when done from just the right angle, in a strongly dominant position and with maximum force, but that kind of perfect moment seems more likely to come when, well, you're the bad guy; to set that up properly you would need to have already dominated the fight to the point where it was no longer the only option.
@ironandthread2 жыл бұрын
100% agree. I have applied these in combat and can say that these motions, at best, dislocate joints. To break something you need really strong force and probably a lever of some kind - like when breaking a piece of wood on a curb. Most often joints just over-extend then pop right back in place. Not as useful as one might hope. - Hung Gar practitioner for 36 yrs.

You think your average assailant (I.E. Dumb Drunk Asshole, bully who’s never had anyone really stand up to him) is going to be anywhere remotely near the level of the fighters you listed? Less than 1% of the people in my country could complete an introductory military PT test, let alone learn self defense, martial arts, or develop the stamina required for either. I demolished any non soldier before becoming one myself, and the only thing I fear from 99% of civvy’s is a weapon being drawn. You should worry about that, not bumping into Royce Gracie in a bar fight. Literally like 0.0001% odds. Where your odds of someone pulling a weapon on you are like 50%.

MMA isn’t the be all end all. It’s annoying that you people think it is. The average person doesn’t care about fighting in a cage, they care about defending themselves against the common person and the common threat. Not saying Hung Gar wouldn’t work in the cage, if certainly could, it depends on who’s using it. To answer your idiotic question, it’s because no fighters are using it merely because they don’t know Hung Gar and thus can’t use it.
