Rhys Clark Film & Media Kinda like us in Canada: 1: "Oh? Seasonal floods leaves people homeless! What to do?" 2: "Send the military to reinforce the regional police force?" 1: "To do what?" 2: "Huuuu... Get them out of the water and give them some supplies?" 1: "Let's put it to a vote!" 2: "Wuuut?"

Rhys Clark Film & Media Oh, I get that. But whether they’re boring, frustrating, or annoying me accidentally or on purpose, I don’t enjoy being bored, frustrated, or annoyed. As a result, on the rare occasions that I end up rewatching it, I end up skipping most of the non-Godzilla scenes. I know I’m not missing anything - the characters are all blank slates that are just there to spout dialogue. We know almost nothing about them at the end of the movie that we didn’t learn upon their introductions, we’re *told* that the scientists are off-beat and quirky but we’re never *shown* them acting that way, and even Godzilla has no personality. He just... walks forward. You want a kaiju movie involving politics that gets it right? Gamera: Guardian of the Universe. It touches on the real world politics of the situation (and is also their first kaiju attack ever) without being bogged down by them, has interesting characters *with* character development, action, good effects... Well, there’s a reason the 90’s Gamera trilogy is so highly regarded, after all. ^_^
@mrNobody06696 жыл бұрын
obsidian179 the characters aren’t blank in fact they’re better then most of the characters from Godzilla 2014, but this is just my opinion, also Godzilla was better not showing emotion cause when he started showing emotion, he stopped being a destructive force of nature

One thing I read suggested the figures coming out at the end were originally supposed to look like bald, albino naked women. On the one hand, I'm wondering what that would have looked like. Decker Shado If you’ve seen End of Evangelion, you’ll realise that the original designs for the tail creatures are a pretty obvious nod to the giant Rei Ayanami that shows up near the end of the movie. They have that kind of Angel-ish peacefulness to them, but they’re also very bizarre to look at. I’ve heard that these creatures were just Godzilla taking on the form of the creatures that defeated him, not for long anyway. He’s basically taking on the form of the dominant species on Earth besides him.

The story and characters were boring. I had more feels for Godzilla 2014. Not as a godzilla movie, but 2014 Goji was a better movie in general, not as a Godzilla movie. Regarding that last comment about not wanting to rewatch it: I have watched the movie so many times I know all of the major plot points by memory, which is not something that happens for me after just two or three watches, so I guess I'm an exception. I loved the movie so much. Also a little tidbit not many people seem to catch: this godzilla is hella pacific. As in he really doesn't attack until he is attacked himself. All of the destruction is unintentional from his part and more of a consequence of his size. Arguably he is the most pacific Godzilla of any incarnation, including the original 1954. Great review as always. Been a fan for a long time but never commented until now.
@kaijucifer35446 жыл бұрын
Machowesker17 Considering 1954 was just an animal driven mad and thirsty for vengeance(he's hideously scarred and disfigured because of the bomb that wiped out his family and home), its hard to call that one very "pacific" when it more or less represented the USA during the Lucky Dragon 5 incident.
@Machowesker176 жыл бұрын
Galaxeus Yeah I know, but I consider the Heisei and the Millenium godzillas far more aggressive than the 1954 version which in my opinion made him the most "pacific" version of the big g for a while (unless you want to count Zilla which in that case made him the second most "pacific"). But agree, 1954goji was still aggressive, just not as much as later counterparts (especially Demongoji in GMK).

Something to remember is that the original Godzilla was very much a reaction to America nuking Japan. Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the surrender of the government (that was a HUGE thing in WWII Japan), and the terrifying new weapon deployed left some scars, and Godzilla was a kind of catharsis for this. Shin Godzilla very much seems like a similar reaction to Fukushima. Not a huge loss of life, but lots of property damage, lots of people blaming Japan's nuclear energy policy, the government being slow to react, etc. The politics in this movie were portrayed the way they were for very good reason: to emphasize how Japan's government is often paralyzed by bureaucracy and politicians being most concerned with their own careers and images.

In fact the whole movie is really critique of how the government reacted to the disaster. The whole seen about the possible of death from radiation no doubt came from what the people who volunteered do clean up were told. (Side note I'm note sure if any of them have died yet). Another side note I think this movie won major awards in Japan.

The scene where he unleashes his atomic breath the first time after being hit by the MOP bomb and destroyed a huge chunk of Tokyo gave me literal chills. Godzilla makes his way to the closest one, ShinGigan, where people are expecting them to rendezvous together. But that doesn’t happen. Godzilla rips Gigan to pieces, and then it clicks. Those creatures are the demons trying to pull Godzilla’s strings, and he’s finally able to cut himself loose. Now he’s after the puppet masters.

The ending with the creepy tail-babies was just [chef kiss] such an Anno visual. I'm beyond happy he & Toho got the budget & crew Godzilla deserves. It might sound rude, but it's honestly rare that a Japanese live-action film have special effects this stunning. They kept the puppet-y quality to the monster & it's movements, but in a way that wasn't jarring or taking me out of what would look believable. I'm so proud of Hideaki Anno for everything he's done with anime, & happy that he's getting to work on passion projects like this to share his vision.

That intro was exactly how I felt the moment the movie began playing in theaters. My favorite movie theater experience ever to this day is that of Shin Godzilla. God I love this movie!

Great review as always Decker. I absolutely love this movie. When I watched it with my father I was dumbstruck while he hated the movie. I could understand because it's not one for an adrenaline junkie which he is used to from the old movies, but more for a thinker. The political standpoint was interesting to me and it fires back at the questions on how in previous movies it would be almost impossible for Japan to rebuild from kaiju attacks so fast giving it realism. Godzilla also was a great design that is underrated to me. His body looks badass and legit terrifying for a nucleur monster and his atomic breath attacks were flashy and fun to watch, especially how he adapts to use them. When he is destroying shit my eyes are glued to the screen and nostalgia from the hesei series comes back to me. While it has some faults like a couple of slow scenes and awkward moments it's understandable considering how they made the film to run and how Godzilla is an unknown beast no one can understand. The problem I have with this movie is the ending and how they will build upon it. The end shows small human like skeletons with Godzilla mixed in. Are they gonna redo a 1998 swarm of small Godzilla plot, or is this going to be something to hint at the origin of Godzilla. I was confused by this scene, thinking they used the spiritual origin from GMK and these were souls or dead bodies from dead soldiers making up Godzilla but then I remembered this one was made from supposedly nucleur fission and the realism would make that dumb. It can't be a dinosaur either because of this so it leaves the big question. I hope they continue with this continuity so we can have 2 Godzilla series at the same time. Maybe a crossover could happen as well, maybe.

I'm a little disappointed, but it's not what I would expect of Shado to necessarily pick up that all the politics and economics is a really harsh criticism of the Japanese gov't (and their bureaucracy's) failures during the Tsunami/Earthquake in 2011(?).

12:01 Her English is the worst part in the movie anyway.... Seriously, why would you cast someone that has problem speaking English, to play a character who's a native born American?

Did you know this film was co-written and co-directed by the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion? So, considering the ending, does that mean this Godzilla is another universe’s Instrumentality? 😂

Omar Harris It’s the fact that I didn’t go immediately go out to watch it. I have issues with Eva. I do agree this is a good film but that fact that it was made by him just made me feel like this was going to suck. I am wrong but it’s not going to make me go watch it on my own.
@kaijucifer35446 жыл бұрын
Keith Thompson Eva was brilliantly executed. The people who call it pretentious or just don't understand it, have not gone through that level of an existential crisis. Its basically a message that tells you to "stop sitting on your ass and do something worth living, you've wasted your time watching this."
@kaijucifer35446 жыл бұрын
Omar Harris No, I don't think that's what it meant at all. I think, it meant "Man is the real monster". Which fits the theme of the movie very very well.

Omar Harris funny you can tell were most of the Eva influence s are. Kinda like the part where they are preparing, it plays music similar to when countering Ramiel.

Very late to this, but the humanoids at the end can be taken symbolically as humans being the real monsters. I think that take on it is pretty nice and accurate.
@NoahDaArk2 жыл бұрын
There’s an even *better* take on it though, one that doesn’t have to fall back on an old and somewhat illogical ideology. Throughout the film it’s shown that ShinGoji is not only capable of evolving but also intelligent thought (this is something Anno himself has confirmed). ShinGoji was defeated by a committee of like minded individuals that came together to stop him… thus, Godzilla himself would become a committee.

Shin Godzilla is what I wanted the 2014 movie to be. The trailers for the 2014 made it seem like it was going to be a horror movie, when it wasn’t at all.

@MrBlindsight1 Me too, there's something about English dubbing that doesn't sound right, the words just doesn't flow with the movement of their mouths, especially when you know that they are actually speaking a foreign language and not English. So I prefer to watch _SGZ_ in Japanese. And as a side-note, I have the DVD and it has Japanese as the first default language the movie plays on. *;)*
