I do think, at least for me personally, what has lead to a lot of the animosity between "persona fans" and "smt fans" is that, along with the elitism of "go play a real smt game" from one side, there is the constant complaining about no new persona anytime any news of V comes up from the other. Yeah, as someone who loves both SMT and Persona, I can definitely say that both fandoms are not perfect. I’ve been playing the remaster too and I’ve actually really been enjoying the dungeons. Considering that all SMT games before Nocturne were all 2D dungeon crawlers they definitely made a game that felt just like a dungeon crawler but in 3D. So, maybe a weird take, but for me, the constant bombardment of random encounters has a purpose in the early to mid-game stretch where it's meant to make you fearful for your life as it constantly drains your resources and forces you to consider if you can afford to explore further instead of returning to the healer for a resupply. Having said that, I will admit that especially on team setups that don't use magic much in random encounters, even around the time you run into Matador, you can start to feel like they are kinda too easy and too common, therefore being really annoying. Additionally, it also feels like a thematic decision in that the constant encounter rate helps to build this idea that Demifiend and most SMT protags live lives defined by constant battle and with no rest for them until or even after their job is done.

I love SMT nocturne and I agree 100% with your criticisms. I love persona as well but the combat engine in SMT games scratches a very especific itch for me. You have to learn about the demons, the game is all about them. Its a pokemon game from hell. I often feel like in persona you get "disposable personas" and you dont get attached to them. In SMT you have to use everything they have because of the difficulty and I love that focus on the demons. Both franchises are amazing. Nice vid man

I think the fact that it's so lonely sells the atmosphere really well. I imagine Demifiend is just a guy that tries to survive in a really harsh world and that really makes the immersion much more satisfying. But really reason why I like SMT more than Persona is the combat system. Persona's One More system with the all-out attack and the recent Baton Pass system just makes the battles dull for me just by cheesing them except for a few boss fights. SMT's Press Turn is simple but it does its job really well by leveling the playing field for you AND your enemy. If an encounter lasts more than two turns happens, I gotta think more seriously on how to survive it. Not to mention how the fusion system really makes you think on how to build your party, while Persona just only has it to make the MC new personas while everyone else's is prebuilt. So yeah basically I like SMT more just because the combat has more depth to it imo than Persona
@pelvisdrones2372 жыл бұрын
Thing is only persona 3 onwards has the whole mc is the only who can fuse demons and use them because persona 1 and 2's duology has it where every party member can have three personas at once, i don't know why they changed it i liked it, it gave me more room to balance my party around bosses and dungeons.

I think P5, with all of the quick changes and extra turns it allows, its more about styling on demons than slowly planning your turns to not fucking die in the next enemy turn. And I enjoy it. To add to the title of this video. If SMT is for JRPGs what Dark Souls is for Action Games, then Persona 5 is Devil May Cry. Yeah sure, you can win the game by just button mashing and abusing your most powerful skill, but the real fun in the game is in planning cool combos and feeling stylish as hell while killing enemies. If you want truly appalling dungeon design look no further than P4. I basically dropped that game because they were so dull and uninteresting. Just looking up the layout of a dungeon seems so boring to me. If I'm not here to figure it out myself why am I even playing? I don't recall what you're talking about in Delphinus so I guess it wasn't an issue for me and not even Eridanus got me to look up a guide. The various hidden doors and the teleporter maze pissed me off to no end but that only made it more satisfying to finally uncover them and progress. Yakko reviewing SMT 3, I love you. As for the elitism in the smt community i'd like to think it's a loud vocal minority and if anyone is genuinely interested in smt dont let those people stop you, after all I started with persona 5 and not gonna lie I think I prefer mainline smt at this point. I love both series of course but point is you won't know you like it if you don't try it.

Funny. Every single SMT I have ever meet either online or offline just encourages people to play the series pointing out flaws where they are and advice where it is needed. I'd say the contrary, Persona fans I have meet come out as far more elitist, and in some small cases even misinformed, about their own games (specially anything before 3)

The "dark story" is never what drew me personally to smt. Honestly I think the stories are usually relatively barebones. Not bad but barebones. What I love is the world. It's like an even weirder version of Alice in Wonder land. Everyone is weird an unhinged and nothing makes sense but it's kind of charming. You know sometimes you just gotta level up your magic so you can win a dance battle. And I like that you just get thrown into that world to figure out for yourself rather than hand held through a ten hour tutorial that feels the need to explain every detail to you multiple times as if you were a child with severe head trauma. I will never forgive persona 5 for doing that. No other persona was that bad with their opening.

I love Nocturne and grew up on it, but man is it a labor of love. I mean actual labor, it's actual work to get what you might love out of it. I feel like on a scale the Persona series is on one far end of the Mega-Ten umbrella, and SMT is on the far far opposite. I'd say that Digital Devil Saga kinda falls somewhere in the middle, likely leaning a bit more towards SMT because of it's gameplay. Nocturne is the kind of game where if you are made to play it and don't like games like it, it will turn you away from any games like it due to the work involved in getting ANYTHING out of it. That being said, I'd put in that work every time.

I feel like you would've done alot better if you started with a game like devil survivor. Its a much better bridge from persona to smt than the proverbial jump off a cliff that is nocturne

ah good old SMT. Its interesting to look at all the different mainline and spinoff games to see what they took and adapted from one another. From the SMT5 trailer we got at E3 it looks like it draws a lot from Nocturne, with the protagonist alone in the world with their demons and probably persona stand man fused with for company. Maybe that's why they selected Nocturne for the remaster, on top of it being a cult classic fan favourite

The epitome of Nocturne's clunky edges is how much running in circles you do to shift the Kagatsuchi phases. Fusing some demons? Run in circles until a full moon to get the extra sacrifice function, or to a certain phase to make a Fiend. Found a treasure chest? Better run around until it's werewolf season so you get a stat-boosting incense instead of a life stone. About to start any boss fight? Wait up! Better run in circles until you have a full/new moon to trigger Bright/Dark Might. And Great Will help you if the phase changes out from under you right as the boss fight triggers. That being said, I still can't get enough of Nocturne now that I'm playing it for the first time ever. The early story is slow, yeah, but I find there's a pretty strong personal story in going from a newblood halfbreed wimp to a full-fledged demon on whom the entire world hinges. Every successful round of fusion feels like its own character arc as you assemble a team of vicious monsters at your beck and call... Plus a Pixie. For moral support.

11:06 I'm sorry what? What game are you even playing? I can get oneshot by most enemy combinations if I don't null some of their attacks and think carefully about how I prioritize turns. Autobattle only works if a single target is left and they don't resist physical, or they have low health. And honestly SMT is pretty much the only turn based game I genuinely enjoy. The amount of strategy and team customization there's at play makes it enjoyable. I might enjoy jrpgs in general if they all had as involving gameplay systems.

“The amount of strategy” lmao just buff and debuff that’s literally the only game plan in these games. Not knocking on the series for that, it’s still fun, but that’s the only “strategy” you need to beat the games. Especially Nocturne, +3 Sukukaja breaks the game in half.
