i hear from people who used to love the "law" routes that 5's is pretty meh. and looking into it [i watched sooo many Lps/streams/cutscenes], its bc of the writer's perspectives/cultural bg being the only one. like, theres a difference between what japanese writers think of gods and God vs. latin american or european. my grandma lives a block away from the church, every saint has a holiday in central america, they have a holy version of halloween...idk. it would be fun to integrate that into SMT's future stories.

11:12 I love this part of the game, taken straight from strange journey. I love the fear of god so much because of how hard it goes and looking at it from this perspective. Going through an unknown world, where demons are just jumbled masses in front of you during your first encounter. During a normal battle, the battle theme plays after choosing combat as an option instead of diplomacy or running like here, but the heavy violin lasts long enough to be the first turn of an average encounter. After this point if the enemy isn't wiped out a choir like noise is where the music goes, and by the time the choir is done, the violin returns harder than ever to signify the battle's likely gone south since if a battle's gone on longer than 4 turns in this series, something's wrong and you need to focus. I love the feeling of having the battle theme bot play until combat is the player's final decision and it works so well for this series that every battle is a battle for your life and every encounter bestows the fear of god
@Fermin-hw5pd3 жыл бұрын
Actually! The pre battle theme isn't unique to SJ (I don't think it was introduced there either), but SJ's is amazing, it really gives that suspense feel, specially when talking to demons (which...demons in that game make sense), and then Fear of God plays, that song is epic as hell, it really fits with the setting The bad part is when you end the fight on the best part of the song

You didn’t have to not compare it to Persona but I’m so glad you did! Shin Megami Tensei’s identity has been so intrinsically linked to Persona ever since Persona overtook it in popularity and it drives me nuts seeing SMT get compared so frequently to its sister series when really they’re both unique and standalone. Great review as well, I couldn’t agree with your thoughts more!
@storm78702 жыл бұрын
I don't personally view comparing the two as an issue neccesarily, in fact, with how popular Persona is, and since SMTV did bring in some fans of Persona 5, I think comparing them is only natural. Now that being said, there's a *BIG* difference between comparing two games from the same company that are similar, and then there is using Persona 5 as your metric for judging how SMTV is and comparing them at literally every aspect, complaining when its lacking features from Persona, the overall showing little care about the series and it's long history, and forgetting important details such as the plot and characters (even if they turn out to be relatively weak, it's still something you should talk about in a review) all while writing it off as just "Persona without the heart" (Yeah I still will never forgive IGN for that "review") A big reason I think this is because by doing all that, you imply that Persona 5 is the golden standard of all JRPGs and anything that isn't like it is "without the heart/settling for less", and this doesn't just go for MegaTen, this goes for any JRPGs, I've seen quite a few reviews of other JRPGs not even by Atlus compared to P5 for not having aspects of it, which to me, is just not how you should review a game. In my mind the perfect SMTV review talks about everything the game does have to offer and its strengths and weakness (exactly like how this person did), however, *towards the end of the video*, begin comparing the two and telling Persona fans interested in the game what it has to offer in a more straightforward way so they can get a better idea on if it's for them or not, idk that's just my take Long story short: Comparing the two isn't inherently the issue, but it becomes an issue once you do it too much to the point you mention it every other sentence, complain about Persona aspects like Social Links/Confidants and the Calender system not being there, and neglect what it does have and writing it off as basically settling for less when it's meant to be something very different is the problem. Sorry that was super long, just thought I'd share my thoughts.
@exyzt98772 жыл бұрын
@@storm7870 Yeah, one thing is that Persona is, at least from P3 onwards, meant to be a fusion between JRPG and LIFE SIM. You know The Social Links? Free Time? Social Stats? The Fucking Calendar System? That's all part of the LIFE SIM aspect, not the JRPG part. Acting like they're requirements for a good JRPG is not only ignoring that they're specifically crafted to cater to Persona's overarching themes of fleeting time, the benefits of socialization and support and the idea of being true to oneself, even if it's painful to do so, and thus aren't fit for every game, but also that they were taken from an ENTIRELY SEPARATE GENRE. which is just... frankly, it's quite telling.

I'll be honest, SMT was never on my radar until I played P4 & 5. So I bought SMT5 on launch and holy crap I was sucked in. Yes, it's absolutely the Dark Souls of JRPGs, where everything matters more and you need to pay attention else risk losing progress...like I did at the first boss battle. I enjoyed how simple it was to play but still difficult to master and the process of demon crafting again and again while grinding a few levels and getting *almost* all the mission completed was fun even though it was nothing like Persona imo. This was the first game I considered NG+ although, I didn't. I was actually very disappointed it was done in just 50ish hours but still gave it a 10/10.

am i the only-one who think the story is actually kinda refreshing in how simple and straight to the point it is? i hate how J-RPGs usually have pointless overly-complicated stories with billions gimmicks and useless details to clutter the actually story and before someone sperg-out at me, yes, i know the fucking SMT-franchise, both SMT and Persona actually but SMT-5 dosn't do that, it's straight to the point: "god is fucking dead, peoples are fighting over to start a new-cycle and take his place, somes are fucking done with said cycle" there's very little useless fluff and it keep the story concise and straight to the point, i do agree that the pace is far from being perfect tho' as Yakkosemen said, half of the story happens in the third-act

I completely agree. If this game had the story content as all the other big jrpgs I would be skipping text as much as I always do. This is a GAME not a movie

@@joehayes8795 "Games can't tell stories" Absolute brainlet statement, if this is the kind of people 5 will attract then the smt fanbase will be worse than it ever was. Even if you don't like stories and exposition this doesn't make any sense, 5 tries to have a story and wastes your time with useless choices but fails miserably. A game that fits your denthead taste would be Nocturne, the story is deliberately minimalist and the game shuts up more than 5.
@joehayes87953 жыл бұрын
@@smtandearthboundsuck8400 Of course they can and do. That wasn't my point and I think you know it. And gatekeeping SMT away from me, an SMT fan, is silly. Games can tell wonderful stories and have great gameplay. Do they usually do both? No. I like the story as it is, which is what my first comment said, but it's the gameplay that I loved best. Previous entries have for sure had better stories, but V for sure has better gameplay.

As a persona player wish me luck because this is the first "real" smt game I will play. Having fun so far I just fused mermaid which looks quite strong for early game. Currently my party include mermaid because of the sig move, obariyon because not only does it have a plus 1 proficiency in support and healing but a plus 3 proficiency in physical and a multihit physical skill although I will probably replace it fully with another physical one although a plus 3 proficiency is hard to come by at this point and finally angel which does good light damage and great healing, revival, and status clearing and once I get attack and defense buffs on it then the prior party member might be replace though solid agility and 3 physical proficiency is keeping it on my team. Haven't fought any bosses so far. Update: got to the tower boss did pretty good with ice skills. Funny thing is that I can now summon mr hassou tobi as soon as I reach level 45 because for some reason you can fuse 2 demons less than level 10. Btw I am having fun so far although I still prefer persona for its balance between characters, story, and combat as well as the daily life elements. Finally beat the tower boss quite difficult. I had to buff the mermaid's accuracy and evasion to avoid attacks and land debuffs easier as well as debuffing their accuracy and evasion making obariyon ironically the mvp in this boss fight. Kinda a damage sponge but a boss like this has appeal though I wish there was more of a hint to its weakness. Beat Nuwa on my 2nd or 3rd try because I gave pixie elements to the protag because he is weak to force. A tip is to level to at least 22 and get a few fire demons to deal weak damage mainly pyro jack who has a +5 aglio and Feng huang who is about as good as the angel as a healer as well as having a strong +4 aglio. Recommendations is to get 3 force dampeners after she gains energy as she will use the aoe attack the next turn. Another tip is that the battle ends at half her hp rather than being fully depleted so although she is tanky, she isn't as tanky as she appears.

I do have a few issues with the gameplay like the last area requiring a lot of grinding when you can just run to the boss and the MP economy. They decided it was a good idea to make MP restoring items a limited resource that you can only carry 10 at a time while making the skills more expensive than ever forcing you to switch out demons in the middle of a boss

I have to admit I only got interested in SMT and decided to try out SMT V because I read an honestly breathtaking fan-work that's using the SMT universe, so it is kind of a bummer that the game didn't really focus on its story. The combat is top-notched tho, and research did warn me beforehand that the series usually prioritize combat over the story, but I still fill like there's so much unrealized potential for the game.
@LegendsP1373 жыл бұрын
What you need to know about the Shin Megami Tensei series is that the games do have interesting stories but it's never the focus at least in the main series. The main series is always about dungeon crawling, party creation, and the ideas about law and chaos. Overall the series is way more gameplay focused.

It is such a misconception that SMT has less story than the worldbuilding because only SMT 3 Nocturne and SMT V that does it Any other SMT games (1,2, strange journey, IV - a literal masterpiece) has such a GOOD story

7:20 if you replace the fruity guy with Black Frost like a respectable person, you basically have the team I used for most of the game from that point on. The essences and grimoires and demon statues made it easier than ever to make a strong team and stick with it, without needing to constantly fuse new demons. I didn't even update their skills that much... just having no weaknesses and some null/drain/repel affinities was enough (along with using shards/gems to get press turns when skills fell short). I still fused some really good demons along the way, but until I got some very strong demons at the very end of the game they weren't good enough to replace Alice or Idun or Black Frost (although he was the first to go).

9:10 yeah that's something that smt tends to struggle with in general. It tends to focus more on it's themes rather than the individual characters that embody those themes. 4 was one of the few mainline Smt games that had a really good story for the series. It's story is more told in it's gameplay. It a show don't tell type of thing and that's where it's charm lies at. Your told in-game that the world is deadly and lonely and it's shown through it tough enemies and it's traversal. If your used to games that are character driven I can see why it could be jarring to someone who (Im gonna get crucified for saying this) likes game like persona. There a reason it took this long for smt to take the spotlight compared to it's younger and more popular sibling that has Atlus's best writers on it. I mean people remember characters like Yu and akechi not because of what they believe in but because of there Storylines and struggles where SMT tells it's story through its themes on morality and the struggles of sticking to what you believe in.
