People knew what memes were back then. 20 years ago isn't 70 years ago, this is the internet you can't just lie on it and get away with it, people on the internet right now were there 20 years ago. This is probably a product of the remake taking from the Japanese script. I don’t know if it was in the original English version or not but if it wasn’t that’s probably why
