The symbolism of this video always strikes me. The mask is right next to him on the floor, so close within reach. It's so easy to slip into that "cover it up, no one needs to know" mentality when you're down on the floor like that. No one can break it off except for Father Time, who gradually reveals to you that you're drowning, and it's all because of the mask calling the shots, not you. Even in the song, "Leave a light on if you're able cuz we both know you're unstable." "Call a doctor say a prayer, choose a god you think is there." All you can do to fight it is hope that you'll be alright (with some help of course) and let everyone know you're still home. Let me be the one to say that this, even as presented in the song and the animation, is the work of the monsters, not reality. They entice us to take on their mask, allowing them to brew and fester under the skin, dripping down into each crevice until the only thing they don't control is the kill switch. That, my friends, they can never take. In the end, you may not be able to heal fully from their attacks, they may leave traces and tracks, but your decision to throw the kill switch will drive them back into the darkness. From that moment when you make that choice, they will never have the same hold on you as they once did. That is, unless you turn it off again. They may fight, they may never say die, but that does not mean they can't be killed. The dragons we have made haunt us, but every dragon that has ever lived (except for Saphira) has been killed. If you understand nothing about them but one thing, let it be that they can die, and you can kill them.

Reminds me of PTSD, and how it can feel to someone, a couple of lines even seem to go along with what people experienced. A soldier coming home, being disarmed, fooling someone into thinking they're ok with their life.

"The single common quality among every living creature on this planet is fear. Its funny then, that as common as fear is, we so easily underestimate its power. fear of growing close to someone and a subsequent fear of loss. A fear of failure, and as more people depend on you those fears can take on greater power. But fear itself is unworthy of concern. It is who we become while in its clutches. Will you be proud of that person? Will you forgive them? Will you understand why they felt the need to do the things they did? Will you even recognized them, or will the person staring back at you be the very thing you should have feared from the start? I guess we all find out sooner or later..."- Professor Ozpin, RWBY Volume 7 Fear and sadness are equally common in everyone, but how we handle or monsters is much more important than the monsters themselves.

In my eyes , it is as follows , the unnatural things you believe in will become your inner self , those things are mostly false beliefs , when that happens , it will do much harm to your real inner self , and potentially lash out , to hurt others as well. The fear is mostly , fear of your own self and the unknown , or what you have become , so you try to run away from that thing , but as your post said , yes you must face your inner self and rid yourself from false beliefs to become your own self , only then you will be rid of that thing that seeks your demise and causes fear and other negative things :)

The other day the radio was on and this song came on and he sat in the back seat and sang this song with a fierceness. I pulled over so I could watch him. When it was over he looked at me and said that song explains how I feel alot of the time. I'm sorry I'm not normal! With air pulled out of me, the only response I could was was, baby what is Hell is NORMAL? Normal is boring! Normal is afraid to live free. . Always be the weird, be wild, and most importantly evey chance you get dance in the rain. As for your monsters, we all have them, some live with them and other live in fear of them. You surpass them. A fantastic song. I saw the lines to depression and other destructive inner forces pretty well immediately. But upon multiple listenings, I have come to see it a different way. As someone who has always had to restrain myself because of my potential for harm, I see it as a really good rule for everyone. Don't be quick to conflict if you can help it. You never know what monster hides behind the face of a calm man.
@svenkollskegg38123 жыл бұрын
Played this during the boss fight of our Werewolf the Apocalypse campaign, interpreted it in a different way, but it was suitably epic and the lines "Good for you, you fooled everyone", "Cause my monsters are real!", & "There's no coming back in Nature's lap with how I feel" was very fitting! Really set the mood for how it goes for vampires (even powerful ones, though not the top tiers obviously) when they get caught out by a pack of werewolves without support

I love all of the other interpretations but I have a little extra to throw in (sorry if someone else already shared this) I think the masks are showing literally the masks we wear, the true more vulnerable part underneath it all. When he passes out his own monster comes for him and he realizes he showed people who he really is and exposed his feelings. His unfiltered words and sentiments drove everyone else to don their own masks and now he's left emotionally naked while everyone else hides themselves from him. Really shown in "Good for you, you love no one" etc. Like you're tough and nothing can get to you, but congrats it comes at a cost from those around you.

depression isn’t the main topic, My monsters are real. It can be pain, anxiety, etc. It’s about standing up and facing your demons. Most run from them, Hide behind a god that “cares”. Instead of facing them head on. My monsters are real and they’re trained how to kill. If i don’t be mindful of the parts of me then they will kill me. The masks represent the many faces we show others while hiding our own face for what ever reason. About realizing you can’t heal everything in you and still trying to get up and move forward. Most people think they can’t move when hurting, meanwhile they most certainly can. Pay attention to the lyrics, They are pretty damn descriptive.

I can understand this song but some times a mask is needed there are times you cant show how bad something hurts you in my case I am a pillar keeping everyone together so I stay strong if I break I dont have someone to keep me together

This song makes me feel every time my father hit me and made me get back up and take another one but all he would say is it makes you a man, it will toughen you up but you know what I got from that was a differnt outlook on life and depression so I'm glad there's tons of bands that can help people like me to just enjoy the lyrics and make us feel like we matter and understood cause that's one thing I believe most of us deal with is will people understand me. But this song does it makes me feel like I can finally take my mask off for the first time and stop feeling like I'm holding my breath and exhale all that shit. ( sorry for the shitty punctuation and writing It just felt good to get that off my chest feel free to drop how you feel in my comments I would like to see if anyone else feels that same way or simular

This song means so much to me, it really shows the demons that are real in people. My dad was a very bad alcoholic and I witnessed at a very young age that alcohol is a mask to hide everything. My dad is now 3 years sober and our family is finally a family again. Thank you shinedown you have helped me through so much♡♡

From just what my head made up first, is that this dude has so many problems in his head, and people are afraid because to them he seems threatening, when he's really just upset with the things in his head. The elevator being two people arguing for both having horrid things, and the realization being he finds a reason to try.

He starts off "normal". The masks represent the masks that everyone constructs for themselves: their alternate persona, if you will. When he gets to the "bar", he starts having a breakdown, as shown by him drowning. He is metaphorically dying under the weight of his inner demons. When he gets saved by the other people, it's symbolising how anyone can help others get over their problems: they're saving him from himself. That's my interpretation, anyway

i feel like this song speaks to me, on a daily basis i try to help all my friends strangers and all with fighing there battles, while also fighting my own demons, its tiring as heck dealing with suicide backstabing etc. and as i get stronger metally so does the inner demons, i suffered depression for a time and almost kicked the bucket, but my brother managed to stop me, so i made a vowl to help as many people as i can before i die, my mentality is strike hard and fast and allways protect, and dont ever commit suicide, which as time progresses, keeping such vowl of not kicking the bucket gets more difficult and as this is happening im fighting other peoples battles with them, the only way i will die, is if im saving someone this may sound stupid but the mindset ive built into myself is a loyal knight, with white armour a sword and a sheild and lantern each peice means something the sword repersents will and is used to strike at your demons or friends demons, the sheild repersents protection over your friends, the armour repersents inner protection from demons and your friends demons, the lantern repersents a aim to pull anyone out of the dark and a light to guide, and overtime your armour will become damaged, but that is when you take a break, and repair, before going back into the fight it sounds stupid but this really helps me in tough scenarios
@bigbadbob70705 жыл бұрын
Nah, that doesn’t sound stupid, I like that self analogy. Keep fighting the good fight, being a beacon of hope and comfort to those around you and never give in to the dark.

@blainemedrano92094 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's a very honorable thought and believe it or not. I have the same mindset and I'm going to carry it forward to my career in firefighting. We all have struggles with stuff in a way and we all have a demon inside. But when it starts to get serious like messed up thoughts and crap. Just think of yourself giving it a good punch and remind yourself why you keep getting up. Everyone has something to keep fighting but it takes willpower and you have to keep getting up. But in all, hope all is well for you and safe. Also like what the other people said "Fight the Good Fight".

Yeah, you never get rid of the depression. All you do is learn to fight it and how to take the mask off. I've lost my fight many times without deadly results. I've just now gotten the support I need to climb out of the pit. Good luck in your war man, don't give up on yourself, others won't.
