Yes, SHINee is 2nd gen., which is considered the golden age of Kpop. However, EXO is actually 3rd gen. SHINee debuted in 2008 and EXO debuted in 2012. Although, the members of SHINee and the members of EXO are all around the same age, which is why you could easily think they were from the same generation. SHINee just debuted super young -- Onew and Jonghyun were 18, Minho and Key were 16 and Taemin was 14 -- and they gained legendary status really quickly. The SHINee members were some of the youngest in the industry when they debuted. Fun fact: Suho, the leader of EXO trained with the members of SHINee and he was originally going to be a member of SHINee, but right before SHINee was set to debut, he injured his knee and had to sit out a while, so SM decided to debut SHINee without him. He had to wait 4 more years before he debuted as a member of EXO. And Kai from EXO and Taemin from SHINee are best friends, they joined SM Entertainment around the same time and Taemin is only 6 months older than Kai. That's why the members of EXO and SHINee are so close, they literally grew up together. Why EXO and SHINee are so similar when it comes to being amazing live performers is because they are both SM Entertainment groups, and this is the standard when it comes to SM. SM is known as the vocal powerhouse of the industry who has gained the reputation for having the best singers and dancers in Kpop. All of SM's artist, including their rappers, get intense vocal training, and they train from day one to build endurance and stamina in order to be able to sing live while performing crazy choreography. So when it comes to SM artists, it really doesn't matter if they are first gen., Second gen., third gen. or fourth gen., you will discover they all are outstanding vocalists who have some of the most legendary live performances. However, SHINee are known as one of the best vocal groups in the whole Kpop industry. Even as rookies Jonghyun and Onew were mentors and vocal coaches to a lot of other singers and trainees, including several members of EXO. SHINee are legends for their live vocals and amazing dancing. The ONLY thing SHINee is not good at is lip syncing, so they have specifically trained, in order to be able to sing live for 3+ hours straight and always sound flawless while performing these intense choreographies. It may be shocking because they sound so perfect live even though they are dancing so intensely, but that is why they are such legends and why they are so highly respected by everyone. They are referred to as CDINee or CD-eaters, because they sound even better live then they do in their studio recordings. It is a running joke between fans and the members that you can tell when SHINee are lip syncing because they are so bad at it, that is why they avoid it at all costs. So when you hear SHINee sing, 95% of the time it will be live. (If you ask any of the members, what is something you are not good at? One of the very first things they will say is, "I am horrible at lip syncing." -- I have heard the members say this multiple times with my own ears.) Yes, over the years they have become better at lip syncing then they used to be, but now they have gained the reputation as the group that always sings live, so unless they are required to lip sync for a specific reason, what you will hear is live vocals. Other Idols and audio sound technicians, etc. who have witnessed SHINee performing live are always blown away, because in the parts of the song where most singers would take a break and rely on the backing track vocals to cover their voices so they can catch their breath and recover, this is where the SHINee members actually ramp it up and become their most powerful. I guarantee, that if you were to listen to them singing a cappella while performing some of their most intense choreographies, they would sound just as flawless. That is why, even as rookies, senior artists would stop what they were doing to watch SHINee's rehearsals on music programs because SHINee's vocal talent is that impressive. When SHINee debuted they were the first group to demonstrate how it was possible to sing live while performing complex choreography and still maintain stable vocals. Before SHINee, the thought within the industry was that it wasn't possible to sing live and also perform high intensity choreography at the same time. At that time, most groups would either sing live and have simple choreography, or they would have crazy cool choreography but lip sync to their recorded vocals. SHINee was the group that changed the industry and proved that if you wanted to compete you needed to up your game. SHINee live is unmatched and it's literally referred to as the SHINee standard. It's the standard that all other groups strive to reach and SHINee are the vocalists that other artists try to emulate. SHINee is literally the group that almost everyone who came after them cites as one of their biggest influences and the reason why they wanted to become a singer and dancer. There is almost no one within the industry today that doesn't idolize SHINee. SHINee's stages are like none other. Their concerts last 3 to 4 hours straight and they perform nonstop and never sound out of tune or out of breath. They are also one of the best dancers in Kpop and they have some of the best harmonies you will ever hear. Nothing compares to SHINee live. Their MVs are good, but those same songs sung live in concert are on a whole other level.

This concert was SHINee's SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) in Seoul, so it was in 2016. You can tell this concert is in 2016 because Minho has gray hair, which means this was soon after their "1 Of 1" promotions, which was their title track from their comeback in 2016. If you watch their "1 of 1" MV you will see they have the same look and style. Minho dyes his hair so infrequently, and each of the member's hairstyles usually change so dramatically for every comeback because of their effort to continually be trendy, that you often can tell what era something is part of just by the members' hair colors and styles. This was their 5th world tour -- and at this point they had already held more than 100 concerts in their career. So Onew and Jonghyun were about 27, Minho and Key were about 25 and Taemin was around 23. "Ring Ding Dong" was the opening song of that set. Right before this, Taemin had performed his song "Goodbye (Sayonara Hitori)" as a solo stage while the other members were changing their clothes, so if you notice, you don't see him in the beginning because it took him a little longer to get redressed. You see him pop up from underneath the stage and join them a few seconds into the performance. However, you can still hear Taemin's voice in the beginning of the song because he was actually singing his lines while finishing getting ready from backstage. That's how good they are at what they do. They still give 110% no matter what, and sound perfect even while multitasking. ;) And, if you watch this full concert, you will see that this set is about 1 hour and 20 minutes into their 3 1/2 hour concert. If you think this performance was good, just wait until you see a full set or the full concert, kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYfSZXWnjd5gipo. :D They are impressive when you see them perform one song, but when you see how much passion and energy they use for a full set, and even a full concert, and still are able to maintain stable vocals while singing live the whole time, you will be even more blown away. If you are impressed with Jonghyun's long high note in "Lucifer," just wait. Jonghyun is known for his amazing vocal abilities that is why he is considered one of the BEST vocalists of all time. What you just heard is normal when it comes to Jonghyun, especially when he performs live. However, although Jonghyun has some impressive high notes, it doesn't even come close to what Onew can do. Check out Onew's performance of "Friend," where he broke the record for the longest continuous note without changing tone or pitch, at 40+ seconds. All the members of SHINee can hit impressive high notes. Even Minho who is the main rapper and the one with the deepest voice out of all of them, has been known to hit some amazing high notes on occasion. SHINee are considered vocal powerhouses for a reason. What you just heard was the remixed version of "Ring Ding Dong" and "Lucifer." so when you watch the MVs, you will notice that they sound different. SHINee never performs a song the same way twice, so it's always a new experience no matter how many times you have seen or heard them perform the song. That's why SHINee concerts are considered one of the best concerts in the world. SHINee live are always 300 times better than any of their studio recordings, and it's almost guaranteed that if someone doesn't vibe with one of their songs right away, the minute they see them perform it live, they gain a whole new appreciation for he song and it almost always becomes their new favorite. It's called the SHINee effect. That's why their live performances are considered the top in the industry. What you just experienced is why, even as rookies, SHINee was so highly respected by everyone, including their seniors. Even during rehearsals on music programs senior artists would stop everything they were doing to come and watch SHINee perform because their live vocal ability while performing intense choreography was something no one else was doing at the time, and people were blown away by how perfect their singing and harmonies were. Even still today, SHINee is the group that everyone looks up to and wants to be like.

"Blueprint" - yessss! Blueprint and trendsetters and one of the standard setters for kpop. I'm pretty sure they were mentors in a way for EXO, since they debuted first, but I could be remembering wrong. I could give way too many suggestions (and I'm only a year-old shawol) - depends on what you're looking for. The opening set of SWC 4 in Seoul is insane - iconic Shinee In The House intro, Sherlock, SHINe, Stranger (think iconic belted high note by Jonghyun) and Picasso. Evil from SWC 3 is super cool. SWC 2 goes a little nuts, adds some rock flair and extra dramatics to both Lucifer and Ring Ding Dong (including an added section with Jonghyun gritting out "ring my bell" in total rock star mode). The energy level is surreal. Juliette is another classic - oh, and Everybody, the Tokyo Dome performance! That's killer. Ballads - so many. Selene 6.23 is a great one. I'll shut up now. It's just that their concert performances are crazy good.

Thank you for continuing your SHINee (as in shiny stars) journey. There has always been a somewhat disagreement on whether EXO was 2nd gen or 3rd because they debuted in 2012 -- on the cusp of 3rd gen. However, SHINee debuted in 2008, four years prior to EXO and actually mentored EXO (as well as NCT). As you correctly stated, SHINee has long been the blueprint and the standard for Kpop performances, especially within SM. It may really help you to watch the videos, 1) "SHINee Setting the Bar So High": kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJObYauveq14pbM and 2) "SHINee Still Setting the Bar So High No One Can Reach It": kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3XVhmidpZp3jsU . These two videos overlap some, but will help you understand many of the things SHINee did to transform the industry. SHINee will always be at their BEST during live performances. I would suggest the following reliably safe live performances to whet your appetite. They are iconic! "Evil" 2014 SWC III Concert-Seoul: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4KTfWmijpeln68 "Why So Serious", 2016 SWC V Concert: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6CYfouErM6iipY (You will finally get to hear Taemin's rock vocals. To me, he and Jonghyun have the best vocals for Rock songs out of the group. Although Key is very close.) "Stranger": kzbin.info/www/bejne/gF7GgoZ8mpl9d5I "Picasso": kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6CYfouErM6iipY "Hitchhiking" 2018: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZurfX2qZc6Gl80 (This was a heart-rending, bittersweet concert that the guys got a lot of flack for doing. For them, it was a tribute to their lost brother, Jonghyun, who passed away just 3 months prior. The media was relentless and claimed SHINee just wanted to profit from Jjong's death. The brothers just felt Jonghyun would want them to continue, as he wanted SHINee to always remain together. They also wanted to grieve with their fans, and start the healing process. For us, it was very touching and a safe place where we could gather together to cry, laugh, and celebrate Jonghyun's life and legacy. I can't imagine how hard it was for them to still perform so strongly in the face of such circumstances. The staging for this performance is INSANE and DANGEROUS. Yet they had no fear and poured their hearts into it. Taemin sings most of Jjong's parts.) "From Now On", 2018: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYelh6uefNCUo5o (I'll leave you with this from the same concert mentioned above. The song that let us all pour out our grief, to cry with SHINee and say goodbye to our precious angel, Jjong. At the end of the concert, Onew, SHINee's leader, assured us that SHINee will always be 5HINee. To this day, they still honor Jjong, talk about him, and often leave places open in their choreos for him. SHINee has an unbreakable spirit and bond.)

I'd say SHINee has more so turned into the blueprint of current gen of kpop, in that they did this concept/style of kpop "first" and it has turned into what is popular now as a result of what BTS has created. But really Bigbang was given the "blueprint" title because they created the image of idols being aloud to be "artists," they made rap in kpop popular, and they made it popular for luxury brands to endorse kpop groups etc etc. Bigbang never did the choreography thing like the other kpop groups did, and relied more on their stage presence and charisma. They also were always more hip-hop/rnb based, and debuted before SHINee. BTS's inspiration and idols were actually Bigbang. They got into the industry because they wanted to be like them, and were criticized during their early years for trying to "copy" Bigbang. However, their style changed around idk 2015 or so and they became more like SHINee, likely unintentionally, but once BTS got massive, groups started to try and emulate BTS's success by copying their style, which happened to be similar to what SHINee had been doing masterfully all along. Even still BTS's music was slightly different as they still used more hip-hop elements than SHINee. While I'm not disagreeing that SHINee is extremely important, are masters of what they do, and that their style is what kpop has turned into, I don't think it is fair to label them solely as the blue print of kpop, especially during 2nd gen and early-mid 3rd gen. I think it has more to do with the fact that their style aged very well, and they are extremely talented and versatile artists who have grown with the genre. Meanwhile, Bigbang went through a massive scandal that would have ended anyone else's career, fell hard from grace, and have been basically inactive for 5+ years, so we will never really know what could have been with them. In the end, time moves on and kpop has changed. I think the release and success of Still Life gives us a glimpse of what could have been with Bigbang in their post military years had things happened differently. Now SHINee being the blueprint for EXO? Absolutely, as they are both from SM and SM excelled at this style of bg for years (TVXQ!, Super Junior, SHINee, and EXO all debuted within 9 years of eachother). You can even go on to say that this current style of kpop is a result of a mixture of what both EXO and BTS have done, and both groups were either heavily inspired by these groups (as was BTS with BIGBANG), or were created with a similar style in mind (as EXO was with SHINee). Either way, I can completely see where you'd come to conclude this about SHINee. As I said, they are masters of their craft and it still shocks me to this day how well they have grown with kpop and how well their music has aged. SHINee are kpop royalty and seem almost to be more at their peak now than in prior years, and like they still have so much more room to grow, which is an odd thing to say given a group that is going into their 15th year in an industry that changes so fast. I think SHINee's legacy will be something very special in the long run.

Yeah, I can totally see what you're saying, in the world of metal there is a term thrown around that you might have heard which is The Big Four (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax) I've been devising a thought process of what the Big Four of Kpop would be in an overall sense. Ugh asking me to pick between EXO and SHINee is probably like asking a parent to pick between their children. I have to go with EXO because they were my kpop first love but I suspect if I’d happened to hear SHINee first they’d be my first. At this point the best I can do is say my favourite between them is whichever of the two is on my screen/in my ears at the moment. Have you reacted to SuperM yet? Highly recommend to check out both SuperM and NCT.
