I have not come upon a more charming game than the Shining Force Series (on the old consoles). The battle sequences are unmatched even by today's srpg games like FireEmblem. The beautiful color composition, the hand drawn art style, it is so full of love and joy. Makes it even more incomprehendable to see where this series ended up...Shining Force Neo, Exa..and soon the gacha experience on mobile (yeah, it still comes).

Glad you talked about the towns and secrets. I've played through it close to a dozen times and still miss one or two things. Also the card collecting in the GBA remake is pretty cool

I still play SF and SF2 to this day. And, I kinda love how SF was a partial inspiration for FFT (even if not officially recognized as such). As for crazy, SF is much less balanced than SF2. I've gotten a few +10 levels, but that's in probably a thousand levels total

After watching several Shining Force 30th retrospectives, I get the distinct impression that they had intended the enemies to be much more mobile and aggressive, but either technical limitations or difficulty concerns forced them to scrap a lot of enemy AI. Looking forward to seeing your thoughts on the other games!

Now I got to look up Fire Emblem. I used to think that Shining Force was THE grid based battle system.

I do agree Shining Force is a great STRPG, but it does have it's shortcomings. The character advancement system is convoluted at best, since the rate is uneven. Also, the Robot in the game is even WORSE than Yogurt. 🤖

Shining force 2 in my opinion was better in pretty much every way. I played sf1 after playing sf2 multiple times. Sf2 is way easier in comparison, sf1 crappy land effect maps, horrible stat gains and unpredictable enemies makes it more challenging. In 2 most battles you can just lure out one at a time and take them out
