Shinji Hirako: THE INVERSION | BLEACH: Character Analysis

Finally we are diving into the vizards from BLEACH starting with their leader Shinji Hirako, a former captain of the Gotei 13 who was exiled from the Soul Soceity during the Turn Back the Pendulum arc. In this video I analyse the past of Shinji, going over his first chronological appearance within the story all the way up until the latest chapter of Bleach. Shinji was the former captain of the 5th division, his leuitenant was none other than Sosuke Aizen, which means that his character shares a significant history with Aizen, I explain their relationship in this video including the role that Shinji plays within the story!

I like how his initially mysterious persona and then goofy elements hides his pure badassery before he unleashes it. Him going against Aizen was was awesome even if he was seriously injured. What added to his repertoire was seeing his more ruthlessly practical side in CFYOW with his Zanpakuto's main ability. In a way it shows how his his harsh experiences have unsurprisingly affected him.

We actually do know what Shinji’s Bankai is as it is revealed during the Can’t Fear Your Own World light novel. It’s name is Sakashima Yokoshima Happofusagari and its has a large area of effect and inverts the enemies sense of friend and foe causing friends to kill each other and foes to love each other. The ability is so dangerous that he is not allowed to use it while in the presence of other members of the Gotei 13.

It's confirmed by kubo that cfyow is canon yes. it's the only novel series of bleach which is canon. Shinji's bankai is banned from being used since it effects everyone around him, but that is why when he used it it looked so busted

One of the many things that amaze me about his character is how Shinji is always portrayed as "laid-back" and "unbothered", but this man actually cares so much and is actually so sensitive & gentle. It plays into his whole "Inverted" theme which is just perfect writing. He's repeatedly the one being in a comforting role and taking care of others. (Telling Hiyori to have faith and wait a little longer after encountering Sado & Orihime, helping Ichigo with his hollowfication, holding Hiyori when she was cut in half, kind words towards Ichigo in TYBW and then talking to Rukia, taking over Bambi-chan so Sanji can move on, not to mention his relationship with Momo, which is very wholesome). He's so kind and graceful, I hate to think about how much he must've suffered in silence when the world that was his home abandoned him without a second thought. Poor baby.

He's actually very intelligent too. I'd say he's close to bein on par with Aizen and Kisuke. This man knew Aizen's every step and even Aizen himself compliments his keen eyes. When he tore down Aizen's disguise when he was hiding, I dropped my jaw lmao. He many not have been strong enough to beat Aizen, but that moment showed that Shinji was aware of Aizen's weakness: Arrogance. That eventually led to his downfall in the future.

Always loved Shinji, he’s like Kisuke lite. He doesn’t have that morally grey personality like Kisuke and he’s not as practically brilliant but he’s very intuitive and has great instincts, and we all know Sakanade would’ve been so bad ass had we not all ready been introduced to Kyoka Suigetsu. He’s great any way you slice it, too bad he didn’t get to show out in TYBW. Still love how Kubo telegraphed Shinji’s power to us by him being upside down and writing backwards long before we saw his ability.

I've started re-reading Bleach again and it's cool to appreciate Bleach for just being Bleach. Shinji Hirako is one of, if not my favorite captain/vizard in Bleach, for some reason. I do agree that he wasn’t used to his fullest extent but I love his design and his dynamic with Aizen. Hurray~ So glad you finally did an analysis on Shinji. The man has been my favorite in BLEACH forever. Thought I'd throw something out there about Shinji too: Tite Kubo has a tendency to pair his characters up into male-female dynamics in order to bring out parts of them that otherwise wouldn't go explored. With Shinji, his relationship with Hiyori immediately stood out to me as unique compared to his relationship to the other Vizards since she's the only one who can banter and rough house with him on a daily basis despite their rank difference. With Hiyori being a lieutenant and Shinji being a Captain, the fact that they're able to talk to each other like high school kids is a huge indicator of how close their relationship actually is. Which is later confirmed by Captain Hikifune when she said it was rare to see Shinji without Hiyori by his side. Shinji knew how hard Hiyori was taking the loss of Hikifune after she was promoted since she was like a Mother to her and his talk with Urahara was also for her sake since he wanted to help her get adjusted to her new Captain. When Urahara told the Captains about Hiyori's endangerment, Shinji was the first one to come to her defense despite Lisa being sent ahead of the others. Which tells the readers and audience that Shinji Shunpoed there like his life depended on it. Then it's worth noting that the brief battle between him, Kensei, and Mashiro was all done one-handed since he refused to put Hiyori down despite his own defense being lowered due to carrying her. Only when she started to transform did he let her go after she struck him. When Hiyori even attempts to help Shinji, despite going through the hollowfication process herself, she gets cut down by Tosen which prompts Shinji to attack him and battle with him in an attempt to save her life. In doing this, Tite Kubo demonstrated the deep bond these two have and how their relationship grew after their exile from the Soul Society. Even during the Can't Fear Your Own World (CFYOW) novels, despite being separated now with one in the Soul Society and the other in Karakura town, they constantly bring the other up in conversation and Shinji even gives Hisagi the task of teasing Hiyori for him when he goes to Karakura Town to interview Urahara. Shinji and Hiyori are mutually provocative and they're not afraid to rough house but they're also extremely protective of the other and their relationship is one of the more personal dynamics within the Vizards. As I said before, Tite Kubo has a thing for putting his male and female characters together in relationships that bring out the parts of them that otherwise wouldn't go explored and when it comes to their relationship I think that it goes overlooked by a majority of BLEACH fans even though they have the most interaction together in the series within the entire Vizard group.

Shinji is also responsible for one of my favorite lines in the series, the "miscalculations" line at the end of the Turn Back the Pendulum arc. Also, given what we learn about Shinji's Bankai in the Can't Fear Your Own World novel, it is my headcanon that Kubo originally planned Shinji to be the one to defeat Gerard in the TYBW arc.

@@lukepichler8881 Well, according to the novel, Shinji's Bankai takes things further and instead of inverting directions it actually inverts concepts. In the novel Shinji uses it to make an army of monsters turn on each other because he Bankai lets him transform "friend into foe". My headcanon is that Shinji would have applied his Bankai's effect onto Gerard's Miracle reversing its effect, dooming Gerard instead of empowering him.

Some people say Kubo's a bad writer and doesn't plan anything, but seeing Shinji appear in that very first page of Bleach just confirms & validates Kubo's forethought and in depth planning. It implies _so much_ about where Kubo wanted to take Ichigo's Hollowfication, and the upheavals in the Gotei that led to the Vizards & Urahara's exile.

Shinji & the Vizards are my favorite characters. Super underrated and underutilized but I actually highly praise Kubo for at least allowing them to maintain relevance throughout the story as we see that post Fullbring Arc, Shinji, Rose & Kensei return to the Gotei 13 as captains. Shinji had captain level physical abilities and a utility shikai. Kubo did Shinji wrong by not only having him fight bambietta but also not using Kido. Kido in bleach is underrated especially when it's supposed to be essentially the main abilities for most shinigami. It would've been very interesting to see Shinji be a master kido user, capable of fighting captains with bankais. So something like Shinji using Kido to block Bambietta and pin her down to defeat her or just give him a different match up but I still can barely see how he can use his physical abilities to defeat other Sternritters since they were just that OP, cutting them down would definitely not work since some of them are almost immune to physical damage or untouchable. I'm assuming the vizards also couldn't use their masks because of how Quincy counters Hollow, iirc quincy powers literally disintegrate hollow powers. Regardless, it would've been very interesting for Shinji to use his bankai to do a 1v10 against all the sternritters like Ichigo did when he burst in. Shinji could've appeared then and used his bankai to solo them all, but I guess that would ruin Kubo's planned moment of Ichigo's friends reappearing.

Shinji is my favorite character by far in the series and there are so many reasons why. While I agree for the most part, the fanbase really needs to stop using that “higher spiritual pressure negation” argument for while an ability is worthless. I know it's true to the lore of Bleach, but evidence has shown it be inconsistent and having only happened once. Aizen is literally the only person who has achieved that feat in the entire anime. To make matters worse, if that feat was actually consistent throughout the entirety of the story, then Gin's bankai should have never affected Aizen and Kisuke's kido should have affected Aizen, because even if the hoguko rejected Aizen, he still has a much higher spirtual that's on another level to everyone except Ichigo. So, while yes, I agree on your take, I do not agree with your reasoning behind it. On top of that, Shinji and Rose at the very least deserve their positions - both of their abilities are overpowered, it is just that they suffer from shonen logic.

When I first met Shinji, my thoughts were 'oh great. another comedic side character to annoy Ichigo.' But after the flashback from the Turn Back the Pendulum arc, I saw he was being that way to egg on Ichigo and take his hollow side more seriously instead of looking at it as his curse. And since having spent time in the human world, the group would become more cohescent in working together. To me, Shinji's words helped Ichigo come to better terms with the Hollow side and helped Ichigo master control of it. I agree that Shinji was underrated and overlooked. His presence provides the final step for Ichigo to begin accepting who he was and how his strength would help him reach the final outcome of his life to protect those he loved. A thought came to me to make more sense now, Zangetsu, being the Hollowed of his Zampucto, housed both clear thinkings of his Shinigami and the instinct power of the Hollow. The Shinigami part was able to hold back his Hollow part to keep him from letting go and use his normal primal instincts for fighting. Though Old Man was trying to protect him, Zangetsu's training was letting Ichigo know that it was okay to let your instincts help you while learning to use your head as well.

Shinji is just such a dope character that I was genuinely hoping would get a bigger spotlight. He tussled with Grimmjow like it was nothing, his abilities are really cool, and his mask is just so badass. I really wish he got a longer fight with Aizen or even more fights with anyone, like, you're telling me 100 years didn't prepare you for a fight against someone who's as powerful as the strongest captains with a shikai that could take over the world and intelligence that rivals Urahara? I wish Kubo wrote him as someone with a plan at the very least, like maybe he had a plan with Urahara and he would place Kidos in Aizen as per the request of Urahara or he had the ability to turn Sakanade on and off to disorient Aizen more. Also, be less cocky, 'cause someone as smart as Shinji should never underestimate someone like Aizen.

I KNOW that Aizen would Get annoyed by their Competence though... He already gets upset about people not being a challenge so He may do goofy stuff Like Asking them to Fight for the Enemy Against him and Maybe Trying to get something Like a Decent Healer BESIDES the Orihime plan.... I mean I KNOW He Knows that they Arent on his TIER or whatever if we were trying to do Reiatsu Powerscaling with consideration of Multi-Paths Peoples like Hollowfied Soul Reaper Fullbringer Quincies and all the Rest of it whihc I think we have at least 3 Forms within Aizen combined post Hougyouku Ascendence, though I assume him to Already be a Lilely representation of just one Dark aspect of the Reio's Lineage probably before even taking Rangiku's and whoever else's Pieces and then Hollowfying... I mean he even looks like the Reio UNLESS Its His Willpower to Replace the Reio making that 2nd Hougyouku form look like him that much... but I almost feel itd be more fun if it was Accidental... but then I wonder if His fate wasnt to just Present the Threat of the Reio's Darkside in Newer beings with the Reio's Split Soul Pieces or whatever that Create all these Special Fullbring and Ascended Quincy Forms and so on so forth and probably a few of the Hollows with Soul Reaper Powers that DO Feel a Little bit More than just their Own Fracciones' Powers, assuming their Fracciones arent just pieces of their own souls given to Lesser comrades or Created in Stark's case... But My point was that Aizen WOULD Assume that COMBINED that Tsukishima and Hirako HAVE NOTHING without some kind of Weird Secret Fusion Device or something but I dont think Kubo would go that Direction without it Costing a Sacrifice of the Fusion's Individual Soul Identities or something or Just Being somehting to make an Even more complex thing like Soul Consumption while Using Both soul's Bodies and Reiatsu to Generate a More Powerful Container for their Combined Souls' Housing which Maybe itd Cause it to Regrow from birth or something or aghhh I Shouldnt talk about Fusion while Talking Bleach Stuff.... But MY POINT was that aizen would Merely see it as "Okay Hirako, Tsukishima... Is THAT Good enough???" as He's Already Entered Ban Kai but Maybe Backwards as a New Cool Thing for Him to Be Able to do Like Whenever He Goes Ban-Kai its JUST A Backwards Yelling of "Bankai!" and All of EVERYTHIGN Is Visuall Inverted so people watching are like "WOAH this Is WAY more than just Making Aizen Learn to Invert Directions, THIS Is Next Level!" Which Id Argue Shinji's Bankai Only Did so Little because He was Out of Practise using His Bankai BECAUSE of the Suggested Restrictions... Im shocked that some of the AoE even Comrades Abilities arent Trainable to Levels Like Yamamoto's Bankai NOT Killing All his Comrades Just By Activation where There are Hints that He has Learnt to Better Control his own Powers and Contain and Condense them to Excessively Powerful Levels but I feel this is Somewhere where WillPower or HaKi could play an Important Inspiration, Like In One Piece the Idea of the Willpower of the Blade to Only Cut what the Wielder Wills to be Cut and to the Amount that the Swordsmen Desires... I would Expect Captains to at Least be able to Imagine with SOME Hints that Maybe its more important to Focus on How and When and in What Ways to use their Most Powerful Abilities and with Consideration of Not Just the Target but ALL around the Target and NOT merely Playing a Game of Destruction on Everything around Opponents.... and Exploring this Deeper maybe Id Have Zero Division Teaching Them in the War after healing?? WOuld Mayuri make some Technogizmo to Attempt to Do this OR would it take Urahara to Make it Work so that the Tension can build there??? Lordy I wish Kubo Sensei were Reading this with the Anime People and going "hmmm SCRAP 5 of those Filler Episodes and Fan Service Scenes cause I Just had an IDEA!" You know?
