Coyote Starrk: THE LONER | BLEACH: Character Analysis

This week I’m covering another highly requested character analysis, the primera espada, Coyote Starrk. He is the most powerful member of Aizen’s army, and helps him during the battle in Fake Karakura Town. Starrk battles the captain Shunsui. Through his final battle we learn a lot about this quiet and reserved Arrancar. We experience the subtle revelations about his character which allow us to understand why Starrk felt alone, and how his feelings regarding his solitude change in his final moments.

Here’s a fun fact. The theme that plays for Stark when he dies is the same theme that is used when Ichigo is discussing Aizen’s defeat with Urahara. I believe this is purposefully done because Ichigo comments on the loneliness in Aizen’s blade and how Aizen may have been seeking an equal, just like stark. Another great video my man!

Now the moment Aizen recruits Stark has new context expecially when you consider in stark (heh) contrast to his meeting with Barragan he didn't have Gin or Tosen with him. It was just him alone and his words now seem sincere. Also it always struck me how little coersion was needed for Stark to join him. He just asked him.

What's actually amazing is even Aizen acknowledged Starrk's strength so much that he was watching the battle like a spectator till Starrk was fighting but as soon as Starrk died Aizen just went to haribell and killed her like he gave up all hopes on all Arrancars.

@@chrismanzano-mallison2812 I agree. In any war there are significant casualties. And the Espada were hyped up to be a serious threat. To the point where they said Aizen only needed 10 or so Vasto Lorde Espada to destroy the soul society. A few captains should have been axed during the conflict as well as some lieutenants and Visored like you said. There is a serious lack of tension in most of the fights because you have the feeling that none of the characters from the protagonist's side are in any way going to lose their lives. From what I hear TYBW does actually kill off some significantly prominent characters, which makes Ywach and the Quincies feel insanely dangerous and makes the Espada seem like punching bags in comparison. Which is a shame cause the Espada are pretty damn cool in spite of that.

For all his talk about his organs being the one thing he couldn't heal and them getting destroyed in his fight with Ichigo, he was still able to fight and talk for awhile after the fact. But when he finally understood what the "heart" was, he died almost immediately. After all, finding meaning in existence directly contradicts his aspect of death, something he embodied since the moment he was "born"

@@corruptangel6793 because Ulqiorra wasn't loneliness, he was nihilism embodiement. if you keep watching each espada's meaning, (almost) everyone died when they came to the realization of their counterpart. Barragan thought he was immortal, but died when he realized that he was been able to harm himself, Starrk thought he was lonely, but died knowing he wasn't, Ulqiorra believed in nihilism, yet he died with the realization of the possibility of something being there worth to fight for.

It's amazing how death of the espada "completed" them in a way They are hollows - they lack something, and they die when that void is filled like Starrk dying after realization that he wasn't lonely, Ulquiorra after gaining heart or even Yammy who died only after his dog calmed him down

Man, the wolf doodles absolutely shattered me. Also, as much as I would've liked for Starrk to reform, I wouldn't wanna see him get killed by The Quincy. Losing to Shunsui is an honorable enough send-off albeit a little underwhelming.

Yeah, his death its specially sad for me, because, even though Starrk and Shunsui are one of the strongest in their kind, they don't like fighting. They prefer relaxing, talking to each other, with a cup of sake or tea. They are just forced because of their sides to forcefully kill each other. I'm very sure both of these characters would form a good friendship, because Starrk was friendly enough to Shunsui that he proposed to pretend fighting each other, while Shunsui was sad that he killed Starrk. I guess this really is a nice representation of what it feels like to kill another person you can relate to in a war. Man, I really wanted to see Starrk be the Espada that lives on, what a shame he died.

I feel like if he had survived the war, he would have been free to pursue Shunsui and be friends with him. And if he was destined to die against the quincies, at least he would have had some time to spend with Shuinsui, and know what it was like to have a real friend. I'm sure he would have been good friends with Ukitake as well. That seems so much better than what he got. Aizen was no real friend to him, and the Espada were no real friends to each other, either. Starrk even commented on this how no Espada mourned the death of their comrades.

For those who are wondering why Stark didn't fight anyone who released their Bankai,its because the dude fought 4 captain level shinigami 2 of which are seniors who trained with Yamomoto himself, 1 of those two eventually became the Captain Commander. Also idk if its on purpose but did anyone noticed that when Shunsui defeated Stark it was kind of a foreshadow to Shunsui becoming the Captain Commander the Captain of Squad 1 because he fought the Primera Espada No.1? Anyone or its just me? Lol

I love this analysis series. Starrk was a great character and I wish he survived. He lived alone for years, watching most of his comrades die in front of him only made his feelings of isolation even worse. He only friend was Lillynette and she died later on. I cannot imagine the pain he must have endured. The more you look into Starrk the more tragic he becomes. For a future video could you please talk about Tosen? He is more complex and nuanced when you really explore his motivations.

Naturally Starkk isn't willing to avenge death of his comrades. If he did, then he'd have to consider himself as someone to take revenge at as well. As someone who have killed everyone he could consider a comrade just by existing, up until meeting Aizen. (everyone dies due to being exposed by his overwhelming reiatsu, just to be clear on what I mean)

Never forget that when Starrk was fighting Shunsui and starting to lose, he said something along the lines of "Why do I have to fight someone so strong?" In my opinion, he didn't mean that in the sense of he was almost dying and wishing that his opponent was any weaker, but, rather, that why after all his time searching for a friend did he finally find someone that he can seemingly relate to so well and not overwhelm with his reiatsu, i.e. Shunsui, did he then have to fight that person. That's my take on it and it's honestly really sad. I know loneliness too.....so I kind of know Starrk. If I were him, I would feel that way too.

Random comment but I find it interesting/meaningful at the fact that Cayote Stark is surrounded by wolves instead of cayotes, almost to signify that despite feeling out of place he longs for company/ belonging, even though he stands out from the rest. Stark is probably the youngest Espada, or, at the very least, one of the youngest. In Stark's flashback, Aizen is already donning his Hueco Mundo attire, his glasses are gone and his hair is slick back. This implies that he was only recently added to the Espada ranking, sometime between the Soul Society and Heuco Mundo arcs.

Thing I noticed rereading the Manga was that Stark had Lillinette join with him as Shinsui started making threats to attack her. They were offhanded comments like "Ukitake won't do anything funny to her..." and such. He asks Shinsui if "all captain's bankai's are that powerful?" in reference to the ones the other captains popped. I think that was the point that, yes, he needed to get serious in the fight, but to get Lillinette out of the crossfire. The safest place for her was in his hands.

Without hachi joining the fight soi fon and omaeda would’ve died.

I think Stark is an interesting character considering he is an arrancar. Arrancar are shinigamified hollows, but Stark doesn't act like a hollow at all. He doesn't have the survival instinct or aggressive fighting style of a hollow. He is born so strong, that he has never felt to be serious which is kinda ironic to be his downfall. This actually disappointed me because Stark didn't feel like he lived up to his status as No. 1 (well, according to Yammy Stark isn't even the strongest). He fought multiple captains but I never felt real danger. Love and Rose felt more shafted than make Stark impressive IMO. I hope you talk about the Zanpakuto of the Shinigami since, besides Ichigo's, seem to reflect who they really are or how they behave. If Kyoraku is a liar, then Aizen takes it up to a whole new level.

I would say he is the strongest due to his pure reiatsu amount The only other character to ever have so much reiatsu at normal state that it could kill other so far is only Starrk, even Aizen cannot do that until he get to the second Hogyoku form And maybe Aizen partly saw himself inside Starrk as both are quite lonely due to their power it just that one express that loneliness while one try to hide it

When you think about it, Stark always had the human like form, Lillynette as well. Which makes me believe that Stark may be a Vasto Lorde before meeting Aizen, same as with Ulquiorra, as they both had their masks removed prior to meeting Aizen.

Other Espada's Hollow holes: empty as a hole is, swords pass right through. Starrk's Hollow hole: some black circle drawn on him which can be stabbed like a Looney Tunes character was trying to use his chest like a tunnel.

You'd have to explain Harribel, then, as her aspect of death is sacrifice. Sacrifice is something Aizen did, not suffered, and he clearly did not fear it.

Starrk is a great concept that sadly went underutilized. Really most of the Espada have this issue outside of Grimmjow and Ulquiorra. And for the number one Espada to go down to guys not even using Bankai felt incredibly underwhelming. He never felt like the number 1 and really reflected the inability of the Espada to live up to the initial hype Kubo created for them.

The reason Aizen made Starrk the Primera Espada was because he had more pure Reiatsu than the rest of the Espadas, but in terms of combat capability he was lacking because he never really bothered.

@@adarius971 I believe so. Everyone says it has to be ulq because of segunda etapa but I disagree. I believe it's stark all the way. Has aizen showed he actually gave half a damn about the Espada then I think stark would have tried more. I also believe had he stayed in his original form he'd of been way more powerful than anyone gives him credit for.. It's a shame we never saw his original form

He was born an Arrancar. Ulqiora was a Vasto Lorde that naturally became one, Haribel was a vasto lorde we see her in that form so we can assume Aizen used the Hogyoju for her and Barragan is a vasto lorde that became an arrancar on his own.

I'd like to think Kubo used the story of King Lobo of Curumpaw for inspiration when making Starrk and Lili. Lobo was a wild grey wolf who was alpha of a pack in New Mexico, back when settlers were finding farm land. Common conflict between nature and man. Wolves outsmarted many traps. A famous hunter trapped Lobos partner, Blanca and used her as bait. Howling in grief for 2 days, following her scent he was caught, each leg in a trap. In captivity he didn't eat nor drink, only look upon his stolen kingdom. He died that night, due to a broken heart.
