Hey Eric, I was looking at the product list on Bill's video and I checked out the product site for the graphite powder he had. Long story short, apparently model painters use gloss metallic blue as a base coat before the graphite for the truest chrome finish. Now I gotta try it out!

Found you on Punished Props, and so glad I did. After I saw what you did with the first sword I was really wondering what effect the base color would have on the graphite, and you did exactly the tests I needed to see! Thanks again for posting this, liked and subbed.

Warhawk76 Be sure to do some tests first to see if you like the results with your particular materials. I’ve seen various results with white as the base. One project I did later, the graphite coverage was very “patchy” looking. I think the darker bases help with the overall illusion of the mirrored effect.

If the prop is resin and non-flexible go with tollens reagent (two part spray, that deposits a silver plating) then spray with water followed by a clear coat. That is your absolute best option for a mirror chrome finish. Its pretty much the same process they use for mirroring glass.

This is really cool. Now I'm wondering if a bright color glossy paint will impart its hue to the graphite. I am actually thinking of using this technique on a Barbie car, and I'm wondering if the surface can be sealed after the graphite is applied. I guess I'm wondering if the graphite will interfere with adhesion of a sealer, or if the sealer would disturb the inherent mirror-like finish of the graphite. Basically I would want the surface to be durable and not have any transfer if handled.

I’m working on a followup with sealers, since MANY have asked. Adhesion shouldn’t be a problem. The issue is finding as sealer that doesn’t dull the the brilliance of the chrome effect.
