Great and funny video! Nice to see it's still alive, sort of. And multiplayer, I'm amazed that collisions works as good as they do. ;-) One of the hardest things in multiplayer physics. Sorry about the SEO-unfriendly name I gave it. ;-)

@@Shinyodd It all seemed quite simple at the beginning; some physics, F=m*a, 4 wheels, apply force to body and off you go. But it's gotten a bit more complex. ;-) So it took longer than expected, and never really got 'finished'. Although it lives on at Cruden indeed up to this day, but mainly just the physics part (not for high-end physics, we integrate many external physics models (C++, Python, Simulink etc) for that, depending on the project, but still, Racer's physics are quite good at handling a baseline car, if you use the right parameters).

@@SGR_Blackout No idea really, I've never seen it before, and I've run it a lot. ;-) Usually things go south when trying Intel graphics-cards with GLSL, but then you won't even be able to start the game.

I found racer in early 2000's. Back then the source code was available. Being a software developer passionate about cars I have studied it in details and used some of its ideas in some small tests I did back then. I still remember how blown away I was about all that and, of course, how hard it was to have the Ferrari P4 handling like a car 😅. Thanks @rvangaal, you're a legend. Dude NO WAY I had downloaded and played this game for a solid 6 months on my dad's old PC without him knowing, I was maybe 10 and thought myself so damn smart. I loved it, car handling was better than any other game i'd ever played. Once my dad upgraded his PC he gave me the old one, but formatted it. I searched for racer online for months but never found it again. Years later, I would periodically still try to find it... even the name was getting hazy, was it "Racer" or "Driver"? Did this game even exist?? This video popping up has put to rest a real mystery of my childhood. Thanks so much man jesus christ

I found this wonderful game back in probably 2005-6. I found someone's website that made some wonderfully wacky custom cars for NFSIII and also had a few cars for "Racer". Despite having incredibly limited skills, I loved how accessible it was to fiddle with and the communities were so active with new creations. I still think the mouse controls, while having a steep learning curve, was the best keyboard and mouse driving control scheme ever. If the person that made the rabbit moon buggy and the insane car that would accelerate like no tomorrow when you let off the accelerator for NFSIII happens to be out there, thank you for hours of enjoyment and for introducing me to Racer as well. Ruud, thank you for creating such a huge amazing project and helping to foster a wonderful community. ShinyOdd, thank you once again for a wonderfully produced, engaging and in this case in particular, nostalgic video.

You said the original Racer was FOSS? There's an excellent chance that somebody can fork, revive, and enhance the entire game, depending on what license it actually used back before it became Panthera. If enough people decide it's worth the effort, they could completely rework the Racer core into a full on Open Source BeamNG-like softbody driving simulator clone, while working to even further enhance the things that make Racer great as-is, and fixing the things that make it not so great. There's also that one open source engine simulator that's been making waves in the last year, somebody could port that into a Racer fork, modify it to work and respond off the loads within the 3D environment, and then all engine sounds and reactions within the engine would be authentic by proxy of being fully simulated. There is so much potential for what could be done, it's insane.

I don't know why this got recommended to me, but I'm glad it did, was a good video, kind of hard to believe that something that's been in development for so long still has so many bugs, but I guess the guy's just been working hard on making the physics good.

I love how I enjoyed Shiny's content even before I knew what a protogen (his pfp) was... And after finding out about it... I love it even more! Funny enough, when I found out about the protogen and what it was, I had almost forgot about Shiny since he... well... stopped uploading for a while. But when I rediscovered his YT channel, I saw the banner and profile picture he has. Which when I realized what it was... I was literally shocked. And also happy! :3 I always adored the white and red proto, even though I didn't understand what it was. I'm glad it never left, or was changed. :> You know... usually I'd grow tired of someone's content after so many years, but... this content still has the same charm it had years ago, and that makes me really happy. ^^ It's like you never left, glad you're back Shiny! ^w^

Ok, a little bit of context: Fokker Aircraft takes its name from Anthony Fokker, one of the pioneers of aviation in the 1910s and 1920s, and several characters have been given his name, including one of the characters in the game Power Stone, who in Japanese was called Edward Fokker (but is called Edward Falcon outside of Japan)

Seeing that Cruden logo, I really hoped that Racer somehow became the basis of the Unity engine with Ruud van Gaal getting mad royalties from every video game released ever since and retiring on a private island

I haven't even thought of Racer for a little while now. I used to play it a lot, and was active in its most popular years (I want to say about mid 00s to mid 10s). The community went quiet over probably a year. Me and a friend were good on RaceDepartment for posting pictures that made other people drool (or so it seemed at least). I even created and released a few cars for it (if you see the name Harey stuck to a car, that was me). I had a lot more private cars though. Also the scripting in that game was not just what you could type in the console. I made (and released) a functional Ford Model T. Well functional except for the clutch pedal, apparently that was the one thing that couldn't be messed with in the script files. That also being said, creating content, at least for me, was never just one person, it was the community helping out to get it created.

I actually found a very early version of this game on one of my bootleg CD's with PC games compilations. I always found the games that were on these discs extremely obscure.

I remember spending countless hours on this! There was a drift mod Called D1SR or something like that, it basically had all the active cars from the japanese D1 drift cars and they drifted so damn nicely! Was super janky to get it all working (just to fix the skies took forever and many steps!). I remember driving on "polish roads" map, which was great at the time...and someone made the Vector W8, which looked very detailed for the time but how it drove was fantastic, really great feel. I remember spending hours "tuning" my Skylines for every more ridiculous power, mimicking real dyno maps. Thank you Ruud!

I used to play this weird racing game on our family's old HP. It was called Wildtangent speedway. You just drove by yourself trying to be your own time. For the time though having a 3d racing game was just cool to have.

It was a hardon maker platform for me, long before the stable ERs of BeamNG.. yet, you still can't swap a bus engine into a euro compact in the latter. Racer was sort of a magic wand, for one, who -maste...- learned abit of photoshop, wav-editor and assembler. Thanks for bringing that half-dead, foul-smelling corpse back into a zombie existence, i can sincerely say, that i'm *not* gonna touch it again ever, but it *did* bring a nice dose of nostalgia to the table.
