A couple of people have asked me to make a long video of storm footage. Apparently it's relaxing??? It helps them sleep?????? Not quite sure how that works since it's the last thing that we can do!!! However, a little bit of research into very long videos showing the same sort of thing over a few hours has shown me that they can be quite popular????????? With this in mind I have cobbled together 2 1/2 hours of storm footage. It will take me a couple of days to upload but, if it's your cup of tea, then you're in for a treat 😀

In these conditions are you forced to point the ship into the waves? Seems that in every storm video of yours the ship is perpendicular to the swell.
@Bigwavemaster16 жыл бұрын
We try to do whatever is most comfortable. By pointing into the wind we manage to stay on location. More often than not, over the previous 24 hours, we have had storm force winds from every direction of the compass. That’s why we have the swell from every direction.

Are the comments you make right before a nasty one said over the P.A. to warn the crew? I used to sail on tall ships and the captain used to do that to give us a heads up to brace for it. If it is, I love your style! He used to just say "Hang on!"
@Bigwavemaster13 жыл бұрын
Ha! No, the big waves are far too frequent for that and it would keep those who are off awake. We do let the cook know when we’re about to turn the ship though.

Hello. Those vents are for generators and must remain open at all times. Unless there's a fire of course. Thanks for watching. Hope you take the time to watch some of my "Life at sea" videos?

Myself being a tankerman and now superint always interested in other types of ships. Your videos are great. Best regards to all guys on board. P.S. Seeing the opened vents made my palms sweat. I had an accident on Pacific, a vent was swept away in a storm and the forecastle was filled completely in few hours. I'm still here though :-)

On another vessel, a few years ago, we had a couple of smashed bridge windows, escape hatch buckle and lost a life raft. Managed to turn the ship quickly to run before the wind and carry out repairs before continuing with our trip. Never saw the life raft again though! Imagine it took off like a balloon!!!!

Is the ship zig zaging to get the waves in the best orientation ? WIth long ships I wonder if they try to be at 90 degrees from the waves, or if some margin sideways is possible ?
@Bigwavemaster17 жыл бұрын
On this ship we are trying to maintain the same position close to the oil platforms we are looking after. Since we are not actually trying to go anywhere, we have the luxury of heading into the biggest waves that come at us from a different direction from the rest.
@IsaacOLEG7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, that mean you have the "luxury" of pointing toward the waves, while a ship needing to trace a route will be obliged to make compromises, taking some waves from the side, or a maximum allowed aside (how much maximum off 90 degree btw ?) Are the rudder, and the engines having enough fast effect to help anticipating ?
@Bigwavemaster17 жыл бұрын
Most ships would try and reroute to avoid storms but if they are caught in them they will usually dodge (head slowly into the waves) until it is safe to continue. On our ship both the engines and rudder are fast enough to respond but larger ships are very slow to respond.
@IsaacOLEG7 жыл бұрын
Thank you again, with the wind and the waves the large ship goes very slowly ? (the wind is coming from the front ?) Sorry for the layman questions, I am admirative of your job , interested , ;) What makes the ship rolling as much is it the waves that pass along its side, or some wind ?
@Bigwavemaster17 жыл бұрын
The large ships are not slow but they are only designed to go in straight lines so cannot turn very quickly. Yes, the wind comes from the front.

You asked how can it be relaxing to watch? I think as long as we know you all made it home okay it helps. But it’s like being in bed when there’s heavy rain and high winds, I don’t know, the safety of home. Also, the bs of modern day worries, issues, fears melt away because all that matters is getting through the next wave okay. Gets life into proportion maybe?
@Bigwavemaster16 жыл бұрын
It certainly puts life into proportion and there is a certain comfort of sitting on a nice warm bridge while it’s below zero and blowing 100 knots outside 😊

Question: Does it take alot of skill to survive those trips or is it just luck & how the ships handles it? It's just that there seems to be times (on other ship videos) when no one is manning the captains seat & the boat is surging thru on its own.
@Bigwavemaster16 жыл бұрын
A bit of both. You certainly couldn’t put an unskilled team on the bridge and expect them to know what to do. The ships I work on are designed to handle this sort of weather but we still have to press all the right buttons and point her in the right direction. I can’t really comment on other videos but there should always be two people on the bridge and that includes the one doing the filming.

I'm sure you've been asked this numerous times, but what's the likelihood of a ship like that sinking in these conditions? Do you have to change course to face the wind and the incoming waves when this happens?
@Bigwavemaster18 жыл бұрын
As long as we all know what we are doing and do our jobs, the likelihood of us sinking is remote. We always try to head into the worst of the waves no matter what direction the wind is coming from. We are looking after 2 oil platforms 10 miles apart so we are so we are trying to stay as close as possible to the midway point. We must try and stay where we are.
@MinSredMash8 жыл бұрын
Just an uneducated impression, but if you lost power in those conditions, it looks like you would still be able to ride the waves in relative safety? Is that right? It seemed like they generally weren't breaking.
@Bigwavemaster18 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't like to try it!!!
@bertboutsma7 жыл бұрын
If you lose power in a situation like this you are in big trouble. Now they are riding the waves at low power and keeping the vessel in the best possible angle against the waves to minimize the effect of the waves. If power is lost the vessel will turn with its side to the waves and the waves will simply swallow the (small) vessel and sinking is the most likely outcome. Especially since I can see on the video that the small ventilation hatches (white ones in front of the window) are open!!!!!!! that is very dangerous. I am a shipmaster myself on ocean going general cargo vessels.
