Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has just delivered a shipment of around 5,000 of its cars to Europe. The company overtook Tesla as the biggest producer of EVs in the world in 2023: a year in which it almost doubled its profits. Now it has set its sights on the European market and is hoping to beat the likes of Volkswagen in their own backyard. DW Business' Rob Watts speaks to Gregor Sebastian, China Analyst at Rhodium Group.

They did 😂... But they found out that EVs dont work in Germany. EVs dont sell here,thats why they returned to building ICE. EVs loose power too quickly at the high speeds on the Autobahn and we dont want to charge 20mins or more when we can fill up and pay in 3mins. VW,BMW and MB made their EVs too early. Tesla was also early but BYD caught the right Moment.

Problem is those Chinese cars for the average customers are more luxurious, have better tech and higher performance than German "luxury" cars. Luxury is relative, when Chinese $40k EVs are coming with better ride quality than Rolls Royce and better interior than S-class, it changes people's expectations and that S-class now looks like an over-priced trash.
@ZweiZwolf
@ZweiZwolf 3 ай бұрын
@@vlhc4642 IMO, you're stretching things. Granted, there's a LOT of cost inefficiency in how Rolls does practically all of the interior by hand, but a Rolls Royce has much higher quality materials than what you find in a mass market car. IIRC, something like a dozen cows are needed for the leather interior of a Rolls Royce. And the woodgrain is perfectly matched. It's not the same as the all-synthetic interiors we find in modern cars. OTOH, you're right that Mercedes interior materials aren't THAT much better than what you find in a mass market car. Mercedes did a lot of cost cutting to unify sourcing across the entire line, from the cheapest A-class to the most expensive S-class. They're not much more reliable, like they used to be. At this point, Mercedes is more about the logo than the car itself. So yeah, Mercedes (and BMW) are going to suffer a lot when compared to the Chinese. Not sure about Audi, but VW is doomed. Rolls Royce should do just fine, as they've always been exclusive and handbuilt.

The price is very high. As a high-end Mercedes-Benz SUV, even though the starting price of the Mercedes-Benz GLE is as high as 699,800 yuan (about 90,000 euros), China still imported 38,300 units, ranking second on the list. The 5,000 Chinese cars imported by Germany are less than 1.2% of the number of cars exported to China by Germany. The unit price is about half of that of German cars exported to China.
