Thanks for this. I was a first trip engineer cadet in 1973 and recall seeing these "Cap" boats as we called them in ports on the east coast of South America - Recife, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aries and Montevideo. Good looking ships. I sailed as Junior Engineer on the 1960 built M.V.Amalric and she had a 9 cylinder MAN main engine with 4 naturally aspirated MAN generators.

As a junior engineer I served on the Overseas adventurer. 1974 I think, 7 cylinder Man engine. Very reliable engine, Had to be sure the scavenge spaces were kept clear of oily residue. We had Indian crew and they did an excellent job. Mention to the fitters who were top guys. Loved the video brought back so many memories.

The old MAN KSZ, spent 23 months of my life on these engines, MAN 8 KSZ 70/150 C/CL and MAN 6 KSZ 70/150 C/CL. Old concept/design slow speed engines, with a lot of problems, telescopic water cooling pipes for pistons with IHI compressors, high presure cross head lubrication with an articulated pump, cyl heads with and inner and outer shell, and injectors without a removable seat. In othe words if the injector seat in the head was buggered that's it, change it. Insufficient air as you can see in the beggining of the video caused clouds of smoke or the infamous faulty pneumatic which will leave shut the auxiliary blower intake to the T/C. Sulzer were much much better and easier to work with. I suppose when you are young you don't feel like giving up despite 36 hrs in the engine room changing a liner and then arrival manoeuvring. At the end of the day you go to sea to "do things".
