Thanks for this. I was a first trip engineer cadet in 1973 and recall seeing these "Cap" boats as we called them in ports on the east coast of South America - Recife, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aries and Montevideo. Good looking ships. I sailed as Junior Engineer on the 1960 built M.V.Amalric and she had a 9 cylinder MAN main engine with 4 naturally aspirated MAN generators.

Ein Maschinenraum wo man von den Flurplatten essen kann, Respekt ‼️😘👏👏👏, guter Chief. Noch interessanter ist aber die Reparatur eines solchen Motors wenn die einzelnen Blöcke geklammert werden müssen. Kreutzkopf, Treibstangen, alles mit 3tonner Hub - und Kettenzüge raus weil neue Lagerschalen rein müssen.

As a junior engineer I served on the Overseas adventurer. 1974 I think, 7 cylinder Man engine. Very reliable engine, Had to be sure the scavenge spaces were kept clear of oily residue. We had Indian crew and they did an excellent job. Mention to the fitters who were top guys. Loved the video brought back so many memories.

As beautiful as this is, it makes me sad as a steamhead that these are considered "old" and that getting to see someone control a diesel engine is the new "steam" age

My father was 2nd engineer British merchant navy he worked on steam engines and turbines and diesels in the 1960’s lost him to covid. Miss you dad where ever you are .

War in den 80ern auf dem Schwesterschiff Cap San Antonio 10 Monate und 13 Tage für Lloyd Brasilero Südamerika beschäftigt. Leider war es die letzte Fahrt unter Deutscher Flagge.

Leute, wenn ihr die Gelegenheit habt: Fahrt zum Hafengeburtstag nach Hamburg und macht die Schiffsparade mit der Cap San Diego mit. Kostet ein paar Euro, aber ihr vergesst es nie mehr! Ich habs getan! Grandios!

Ansonsten kann man die Cap San Diego auch so besuchen. Haben wir damals gemacht - sehr interessant! Ich wusste auch nicht, dass man damals schon zahlende "Kreuzfahrer" mitgenommen hat.

Die beste Art das Schiff zu besichtigen wenn die Technik läuft und das Schiff fährt. Zu empfehlen ist, mehrmals den Maschinenraum aufzusuchen gerade dann, wenn wie im Nord-Ostseekanal wegen des Verkehrs die Maschine mehrmals gestoppt- und gestartet werden muss.

Ich bin 1967 auf einem ähnlichen. Schiff,der ms HORNLAND bis zu ihrer Kollision mit einem französischen Schiff in Rotterdam als E Assi gefahren. Das war noch Seefahrt.jedesmal wenn ich die cap San Diego sehe,bekomme ich heute noch feuchte Augen.

that propeller shaft woud be 2 arm thick hydraulic hoses or 1inch or less electric cable for the same poweroutput. i still love these all mechanical engines.

Hat leider nicht geklappt. Schon nach nur 50 Jahren war eine der neun Laufbuchsen ausleiert und musste aufwendigst in Japan nachgefertigt werden.

Man engines rules. We hade this cruise ferry Silja Europa a long time on the route between Stockholm where i live to Turku. It also had Man Engines. With a really heavy sound to it.

Durfte an Christi Himmelfahrt drei Tage in Hamburg verbringen. 2 alte Seebären an der Großen Freiheit haben mir geraten, das Schiff zu besichtigen!! YEAH!! Ich hab´s keine Sekunde bereut und mich hoffnungslos in den alten Kahn verknallt!!!

Das ist eine Maschine! 50 Umdrehungen pro Minute, Gewaltig. Ich arbeite an alte Diesellokomotiven mit Langsam laufende motoren, dieser ist nog einige Massen größer.

Большие серии судов по советским проектам строил ГДР для СССР. Самым проблемным был двигатель МАН этой серии, который установлен на Сан Диего. Сколько здоровья, нервов и пота пролили моряки работая на судах где стояли эти двигателя. Одна из серий судов построенная в ГДР с этим двигателем была названа моряками ,,Месть за Сталинград,, Работал на четырёх типах Манов. Только один тип с этих двигателей отличался боле менее надёжным и то он ставился на малотонажные суда. Остальные типы это тяжелейшие в ремонте и ненадежные двигателя, которые приносили головную боль и проблемы всем кто был причастен к этим типа двигателей. Сколько поршней было передергано во время рейсов и не сощитать и это в основном происходило в тропической зоне. Вот вам пример. Погрузка в портах Канады и переход. Первый порт Гонконг у причала вытаскиваем поршень, смена колец. Второй порт Бангкок, замена цилиндровой втулки и замена колец на поршне. Третий порт Сингапур, лопнул блок третьего цилиндра, заварка блока заводскими специалистами и замена штука с поршнем после гидроудара. Четвёртый порт Кланг Малайзия, замена колец очередного поршня, чистка подпоршневых после пожара в ресивере. Пятый порт ПенангМалайзия, замена втулки поршня, трещина и шестой порт Манила, вытаскиваем оставшиеся два поршня. Итог, за три месяцев восемь поршней, обратный переход на Окленд США и порты Канады без происшествий.

Seems strange that you get to see the engine of a big ship and when it's running all you see is a tiny handle turning round. The working of a Grandfather clock would have more umphffff 😄

Beautiful ship but that is not a "Giant" marine diesel engine. FYI, the first step the operator made on the starting wheel was the starting air. The next movement was for the fuel

I served on this ship between Buenos Aires and Hamburg, was onl6 16 and under then German law any Germen ship must take me back to my home land , free of charge…I had a good time , the ship electrician “Lorenz” told me a lot…
