Man, I remember being on that same ship you were on. That was like maybe 10 years ago. Still looks the same!

Awesome video Nic! I've done a couple of ferry crossings of the English Channel. The one I'd like to have done here in Australia is the Spirit of Tasmania crossing between mainland Australia and Tasmania, at 448km or 242 nautical miles. On a tiny scale the Sydney Harbour ferries are amazing in stormy weather crossing the heads. There are some great pics and videos. Cheers

To add a point: The C-Class are from the early to mid 70s ships.. Oak Bay was infamous for crashing in 2005, Cowichan great to be on.. Alberni.. At the end of its run, is maybe the mini of the 5. Surrey has been retired for a while so there are only 4 left in the class fleet. Coquitlam been good. Got to ride most of these classes growing up, even remembering they had escalators for a bit. The Queen of New Westminister is from the Sydney class fleet which were the 1960s fleet... and is the only ship remaining in service. As always, great video.

New Westminster is V class which is based on the Sydney class with some modifications and changes

Yes the C-class is originally from 1976 with the later two from 1981. As mentioned they will all be retired when they are replaced in 2029. I'm not sure what you mean about queen of Surrey being retired.
@greego5952
@greego5952 Ай бұрын
The queen of alberni is still the smallest of the C class today but originally it had only one vehicle deck. It was designed to carry one level of oversized vehicles for the duke point to assessment route. They did end up adding another vehicle deck in the future to carry more cars, but out of all the BC Ferries, the Alberni probably has the greatest capacity for oversized vehicles.

Looks like there are rate compensating heat detectors that trigger the deluge sprinklers, round electrical box directly under the light.

17:23 That specific Wheelock alarm is is usually used as a sprinkler alarm as the strobe is not compliant for life safety use and it runs off of 120v AC. I’m guessing that they are using it for a suppression system.

Galveston's ferry called “The hope” has a uk fire system in Texas.
@djijspeakerguy4628
@djijspeakerguy4628 2 ай бұрын
Down in the Seattle area we have a similar ferry system. I feel like the fire safety systems are similar. Most of the ones I’ve seen have had either Wheelock MT “general alarm” horns (set to “bell,” I’m guessing), or mechanical bells. I think they are manually activated by the crew for some emergencies, but there may be some hidden smoke or heat detection somewhere. They sound a different amount of blasts depending on what floor the fire is, according to the safety placards. They had an engine fire once on one of our biggest boats the 1998-built Jumbo Mark II class M/V Wenatchee, and I think I remember hearing on the news that an alarm did in fact sound, but the fire doors kept the fire in the engine room and it went out on its own, though they could’ve activated a suppression system. We also have the two original “Jumbo Class” ferries that were designed by the same firm as the C class and look extremely similar: ours were actually the first, and the C class was based off of them if I recall correctly. One of them (M/V Walla Walla) lost power and got stranded on a beach last year… coincidentally on the 111th anniversary of the day the Titanic went down.
@nics-systems-electric

Yes that sounds right, I knew the C-class was based on a class of ferries from Washington state ferry system. And thought about mentioning it in this video. However I didn't know which class in specific. I'm not sure if they are quite deserving of the "jumbo" name but still interesting for sure.
@djijspeakerguy4628
@djijspeakerguy4628 2 ай бұрын
@ They are certainly big in comparison to a lot of the ships on our system: our smallest 3 “Kwa-di Tabil class” ships only hold 64 cars! The Jumbos are called that because I believe they were the largest double ended ferries when they were built, (and the successors to the late 60s “super class,” also the biggest of their time, of which 2 are still running.) Of course, many of the BC Ferries ships are a bit larger than our biggest 3, the late 90s Jumbo Mark II class. (I know the naming scheme for the larger ferry classes is super lazy.) The Olympic class are our current new relatively mid-sized ships, but we have some new “hybrid electric class” ships similar in size to the Olympic class designed and planned.

@@djijspeakerguy4628 we also have some comically small ferries I believe some of the smallest have been retired the smallest still around I believe are the N-class with a car capacity of 16 lol

@@nics-systems-electric No doubt those are/were used for less travelled locations. Our system is in a bit of a low point right now with aging boats being constantly in and out for repairs, so the busy routes sometimes get more cramped ferries. Luckily we should have a few new boats sometime before 2030, and our fleet is slowly either being replaced or upgraded to battery hybrid drive.
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric 2 ай бұрын
@@djijspeakerguy4628 yes they are definitely on their low capacity roots. As far as our main routes between Vancouver Island and Vancouver it's pretty consistent with what you can expect to see where you will see nothing smaller than the Queen of New Westminster. I believe new Westminster was intended to be used when the coastal or spirit class is down. However she seemed to be in service all of the previous summer when there are ferries every hour.

I travelled on The Queen of Cowichan back in June…interestingly enough though she has newer NBG-12’s for the pull stations while the bells are original 1976 10” Adaptabels…The Oak Bay appears to have a much greater mix of bells with Simplex and Notifier along with what I assume are 1981 Edwards (the ones with no labels) Another interesting fact about the 1976 C-Class ships; they originally had escalators which transported you from the car decks to the passenger ones but caused so many accidents that they were not included in the 1981 C-Class designs…those escalators were eventually removed and replaced with stairs in the mid 2000’s. As for the Queen of New Westminster; she’s due to be returned to service in January 2025.

That's interesting that some of the sisters had different pull stations. i've heard rumours about the elevators interesting to hear which specific ships those were on. As for new Westminster hopefully that is accurate date for return. Not sure if I will be able to get on that one as I thought she was supposed to be a back up for the other coastal and spirit class but with the decreased sailing in the winter anyway I'm not sure how that would work.
@mikeross880
@mikeross880 2 ай бұрын
The escalators were on The Queens of Cowichan, Coquitlam and Alberni. Interestingly enough there actually was a very notable accident in 1995 involving one of the escalators on The Queen of Cowichan; a young girl fell and was trapped while travelling on the Horseshoe Bay-Langdale route. This resulted in the ferry being pulled from service with The newer Queen of Surrey(which only has stairs) taking its place due to the high volume of foot passengers using that route. Only one other ferry in BC Ferries fleet had escalators and that was the Northern Adventure shortly after she was purchased second hand from a shipyard in Greece but those escalators barely worked at all. Nine months later the escalators were replaced also with stairs ironically around the same time as the 1976 Cowichans. Also my apologies, looks like the Westminster is actually tentatively supposed to be returning in March so you may be in luck.

Mooring the ships between each back to back sailing would slow down the entire operation. They do stay in by keeping some forward thrust. I am guessing they do get tied up at night.
