Your ability to review and discuss novels is as good as Robin Hobb's ability to write novels. Such wonderful enthusiasm and insight and wisdom. I love how it was talking about Kyle that caused you to use the rare curse word on the channel. 🤣

Simply Fabulous. This is exactly the insight I was hoping you would offer for both Kyle and Kennit. THANK YOU!! One advantage to setting so much of this trilogy onboard ship, is the enforced closeness, the inescapability of situation. None of our characters can get away from their stressors, bringing emotions to boiling point that much faster. All of that enabled Robin Hobb to write at intensity level 11 and have it feel completely natural. You didn't get a chance to mention the serpents (totally understand - if asked to choose, I'd absolutely pick talking about K & K instead), but I'm going to ask you to re-read the passage you mentioned about Kyle almost throwing Wintrow overboard, and notice the concurrent serpent interactions. I'd be interested in your thoughts on if and how the serpents contributed. The Rain Wilds are a fascinating place, and if you're interested, there's a short story - Homecoming, included in the collection The Inheritance, which tells the story of the founding of the Rain Wilds community (wait until the end of Liveships though). Have a good New Years celebration :)

Thanks, Derri! I didn’t get to mention the serpents, but I won’t do a spoiler free for books 2&3, so hopefully I’ll have more time then. I will definitely go back and reread that part. The little hints about the serpents abilities are so intriguing - one of the best mysterious of the book. Can’t wait for the secrets to start to unfold. I appreciate your comment about the closeness of quarters on board the ship. That is absolutely true and certainly contributes to the heightened emotions!

Great video! I loved your perspective on the psyche of the characters. I was so conflicted with Kennit! I hated his motivations but if he was able to achieve his goals it would actually help a lot of people so I kept rooting for him. My heart will always belong to Fitz but I truly loved the magic and mystery of this trilogy. I'm glad you are enjoying this trilogy so far and I think it will continue to give you more of the things you love the most. That being said, I can't wait for you to start the Tawny Man trilogy and experience that comfort and homecoming of being back with Fitz. Nothing beats that feeling. Robin Hobb has spoiled a lot of fantasy for me because I keep chasing that character bond.

@JolienReads2 жыл бұрын
Oooh, the best book you read this year? That's so high praise! I think you will like the second book EVEN more! Like you I enjoy one POV most of all and that's why I had a hard time with the beginning of Ship of Magic. It took me a while before I got into it. But all of the characters are so rich and multilayered that the multi POV aspect becomes one of the major positives of the series. I think that most authors aren't good enough in terms of characterwork for me to like multi POV, but Robin Hobb pulls it off (like George RR Martin for instance does as well). Fitz is ofcourse very close to my heart, but Kennit is probably one of the most intense and interesting characters ever written. Definitely my favorite of the trilogy.
@TheBookCure2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jolien! I agree that Martin & Hobb are both masters when it comes to managing the multiple POVs. I enjoyed Kennit’s sections so much and I expect that to continue with the next two books. I really enjoyed this, but I think my appreciation was raised because I wasn’t expecting to love it this much!

I'm so happy that you've liked this book! Capt. Kennit is probably the most complex antagonist that I've read. It even gets more and more complicated in future books. Hobb is just amazing when it comes to writing characters. There are a some tortured souls in this series. Would be interesting to know your professional analysis of their psyche if you ever decide to do such a video after you finish the trilogy. This is also a severely underrated trilogy in fantasy. I hope that it will get more exposure and appreciation

I think I’ll be better able to give a full opinion on the characters once I’ve finished! Hobb definitely provided such rich insight that we get to know these characters intimately. Kennit is so intriguing - certainly the character I want to know the most about.
@KakashiHatake-ou7mp2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBookCure Oh yes definitely. Your perspective will probably change a lot as the story progresses and we get to know all our characters more 😊 Kennit is probably the most fleshed out Villain I've read about. He is the antithesis of the moustache twirling evil character. Every character in this series has a fleshed out arc and a compelling motivation for their deeds. In so many books characters just do things randomly to drive the plot further. In Hobb's world, characters tend to stay true to their nature. Even if there is a change, it doesn't feel forced or random.

Kyle's narcissism to my mind stems from insecurities, and he needs social validation. Which is why he's able to follow the rules and norms of society, and can fit in. Kennit is much more secure in himself, doesn't hang on to societal norms but sees the potential in individuals. Very interesting analysis! And happy you loved the book so much. 😊 Dang it.. wanna reread it now. 😣
@TheBookCure2 жыл бұрын
This is absolutely true. Kyle lacks that self-confidence that allows Kennit to plot/scheme more effectively. That being said, I think Kyle’s ability to follow social mores does have a limit, depending on the intensity of his emotions/how much he thinks he has been wrong. We see his breakdown because his fragile ego can’t let him accept that he could be wrong. I think Kennit’s self confidence makes him able to recover from mistakes and adapt his plans. I am interested in Kennit’s need for cleanliness/his abhorrence of anything dirty. And I really want to know more about his upbringing. He’s a fascinating guy, and I’m sure the rest of the series will prove that to me!

I have been putting off this book precisely because of the relatively common complaint that the pacing of the plot is very slow. In a 900 page book, particularly the first in a trilogy, that is a huge impediment. It is one of the reasons why I did not complete The Blade Itself.
