I haven't read a massive library of books... But Mad Ship is my favorite book I've read so far. It's a masterpiece. Just being with these characters in this magical world they are a part of and learning more about the world with them and experiencing the things they experience... Wow.

I can’t wait to start this series!! I’m just finishing the last of the 9 Farseer/Elderling books…Unlike most large book series, the first book was probably my least favorite and they kept getting better from there. Robin Hobb is a legend 🔥🔥🔥

Completely agree that the romance is realistic for the different age groups throughout the series, but sadly it turns some people off because they find it annoying (Fitz and Molly for example). Hobb writes emotional and psychological aspects so well! The best thing about Mad Ship is how much I liked characters that I detested in Ship of Magic 😆 Great review!
@thefantasynuttwork3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I definitely prefer more realistic fantasy, even if it's annoying (which molly and Fitz were 😂)

I second your opinion on Robin Hobb's handling of romance. I think she handles the emotional turmoil and consequences of intimacy really well in general. One of my favorite scenes when rereading Mad Ship is in ch.11 when Amber and Althea are just chatting about life and relationships and unpacking both in a very honest way that gives insight into both of their characters. I treasure small scenes like that and Hobb does them so well. A lot of other authors skip over that kind of thing. I'm also of the opinion that the Elderlings are the coolest fantasy race and unravelling the mystery behind them is masterfully done. Super interested to see your thoughts on certain characters in Ship of Destiny. The first time I read this series I was floored at where certain characters ended up considering my initial impressions of them.

Absolutely agree with Robin Hobb writing the best romances. In Rain Wild Chronicles she even proved to me that a love triangle can actually be well executed. Kennit is truly a character that you never will forget. And still, so far I hated all her villains more and more each mini-series (up to Rain Wilds so far). Excited to see how you will feel about Ship of Destiny and Amber then❤️

Great review! I completely agree that Ms Hobb creates amazing villains. I think some of this is that she writes them with realism. Their intentions and motivations are believable and understandable. As for character growth, Ms Hobb gives consequences to her characters, and allows each to be altered by them, for good or ill. So we see pettiness turn to cruelty, or selfishness to courage, and again, it's believable, and we end with very different feelings about them. I look forward to the spoiler chat

This was a fabulous review, thank you! And kudos to you for being able to do a spoiler free review of this. I just finished and I'm still trying to place my jaw back in place 😲 I agree when u say the scale of this story is humongous... when you think it's reached its limit of where the story can go, it expands even more...Hobb is a genius! I found Malta was the most intriguing. I feel like Hobb explores uncomfortable societal notions through Malta's POV and how others perceive her. It could be because I have daughters and they are a few years away from Malta's age, so I found how her Keffria and Ronica and society perceive this 'child/woman' quite unsettling and heartbreaking....but then I would find myself getting so angry at her too...LOL! I love it when writers are able to grab our minds and hearts and completely twist it! This ride is awesome, can't wait to move onto the last book!

Great review! I totally agree, Hobb's book twos are excellent. At this point I don't even hate Kyle anymore, I just pity him. He's a pathetic, crazy man and I just don't care what he says because it's so over the top and irrelevant. Kennit, on the other hand, is so terrible because he's extremely manipulative and the characters don't even realise how much he's using them for his own gain
