To answer the question of bunk orientation, it is better to roll side to side, versus pitching. In the Royal Navy, as well as the US Navy, all bunks are aligned fore to aft. 😊❤
@petemelbourne427 сағат бұрын
Yeah, it is really uncomfortable sleeping beam to beam, and you are a lot more likely to get sea sick, it will be like sleeping on a rollercoaster, one moment head down, next head up.
@spinningtop57497 сағат бұрын
Not all bunks are fore and aft, they’re also athwartships too in RN vessels; and while there are no rules on orientation, when underway it’s often more comfortable aligned fore and aft. I only served 20 years in the RN , so could be wrong.
@ve7cbh6 сағат бұрын
I agree with this. During my work I have had tgo go to sea on RCN ships from time to time and while we would usually sleep in an empty bunk, we did at times need to use a portable cot. Sleeping in a thwartship bunk is not pleasant sleep at all if there is any roll on the ship. Vertical motion of my head during rolls brings on sea sickness so I suggest along with the others that you keep all sleeping arrangements fore and aft.
@assiebruins25456 сағат бұрын
Totally correct. Your vessel will be rolling more than bigger ships. Take the advice above!
@whoever73746 сағат бұрын
Bunks are also usually arranged so that the occupant's head is higher than the feet. Having said that one of the berths has the bunks oriented athwartship. Allows you to find a bunk for swell conditions while moored.

Beds on ships are typically placed facing forward (toward the bow) to align with the natural movement and stability of the vessel. This orientation helps reduce the feeling of motion sickness for the people sleeping. When beds face forward, they are positioned in a way that minimizes side-to-side or rolling motion, which is more pronounced when beds are oriented side-to-side or aft (facing backward). By aligning beds with the direction of the ship's movement, the motion is more predictable, and the sleepers experience less disorientation. This design is especially important on large vessels where comfort and stability are key to preventing discomfort from waves and shifting motion. (Greetings frm the Netherlands) Erik

After over 40 years at sea not all "bunks" run fore/aft,I personally prefer "athwartship" bunks in rough weather. If I was doing your refit I would have a mixture of bunks in both directions so if a crew member could not get a good nights sleep in one type you could move him to the other type.

I had the English subtitles on. When Gemma was talking about sleeping positions, it actually read 'your head goes here and your feces go there', I nearly crapped myself at that point.. About the access hatch: maybe the floorplan of her sistership will tell you what it used to be there for. I don't recall seeing normal staircases on her sistership, but then again, I don't think the deck height in that spot on Sarinda is original.

The packing gland, is usually nipped up, till you get a slight weep when the prop is running ( this keeps the gland lubed & cooled ). If you get your self some 1/8 spring steel, and make a pigs tail ( basically a bottle cork opener ) it will be easier to remove the old packing.

As your vessel motion will roll more than pitch, it is more comfortable to hav bunks foren’aft. I suggest from many years at sea in small ships, remember your days rocking the cradle and how the hammocks were hung in days past. Love the program!

In my personal opinion, the video and audio quality are both better with your new camera. Also as far as your berths are concerned, the vessel typically will not pitch as much stem to stern as it will port to starboard. This is solely due to the length being so much greater than the width. Keep up the fantastic work your doing!

The reason bunks run fore & aft. Imagine you are trying to sleep in a rough sea. The boat will be rolling far more than pitching due to its length. The choice of bunk direction now means:- a) A fore & aft bunk means being rolled side to side. This you can limit by using blanket etc to wedge yourself in place. b) Whereas a cross beam bunk will have your head dropping away below your feet level, only for this situation to reverse a few seconds later. This two states will be continuously alternated every few seconds. btw Do you feel seasick st the mere thought of this movement? P.S. I grant that situations can arise where the boat could be pitching more than rolling but these are thankfully very rare and in such a situation you have much a much bigger problems to worry about than trying to sleep.

Cabins on the merchant ships I served on had the bunk fore-and-aft, but also had a 'day bed' oriented across the ship, so you could pick whichever was more comfortable depending on the ship's motion

I served on CN-66, USS America & CVN-65, USS Enterprise. I never thought about it but the bunks were aligned fore and aft. On an aircraft carrier the pitch, unless there was heavy seas, was not to much of a struggle. The roll always aided in putting me to sleep, no matter the seas.

Boats typically place beds "forward and aft" (meaning towards the front and back of the vessel) because this orientation generally provides the most stability for sleeping passengers, as the pitching motion of the boat (up and down movement) is less pronounced in these areas compared to the middle (midship), where rolling motion is more noticeable; essentially, it minimizes the feeling of being tossed around while sleeping.

Video & Audio clarity seems much better. Nice to see Simon’s generator creation in use at last👍 Quick question regarding the remote radiator, do you have any concerns that the extra foot head will wear the engine pump out? In some cases the engine water pump is blanked off & an external electric pump is installed. I guess close monitoring would detect any issues.

I had a thought about new insulation… Cover the area with commercial cling film and throw in some two pack spray foam. When cured you can just pop it out and put back as needed. Alternatively cut PUR slabs to fit between timbers. You should be able to get two layers in the deeper bits.

In my experience, both in US navy and merchant ships, it is better to have the bunks oriented fore-and-aft versus athwartships. The reason for this is that the latter does tend to foment seasickness and it also not the most efficient use of space. Now, there are some who will say that fore-and-aft bunks can make for uncomfortable sleeping when the vessel is rolling. This is true, but a solution to this problem is to place one's life jacket under the mattress which creates a wedge which prevents you from rolling when the ship rolls. As my wife will attest, I still sleep with a pillow under one side as a wedge even though these days I don't need it. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your videos.

In my time at sea, bunks are fore/aft sleep with your head to the bow as most ships have a slight trim up at the bow this helps prevent blood from running to your head. (Old mariner saying: Only dead men sleep with their feet to the bow) Cross settees are rarely used for sleeping, because of rolling also as you as now your boat has a list, need to re-orientate pillows etc when the list changes.

That twin diesel looks so much like one I own. I have no fancy electronics on mine, but can testify it is a great engine. Thermo King is the name on a crest but I know they don't build engines. Wish I knew if mine is a Kubota or not, being about 6 horsepower. There is no need to run these above 1000 rpm unless quick recharge of batteries is required. Charging 15 amps or less for long periods is my preference. One improvement I made was to dedicate one pulley to the alternator circuit and run the water pump separately with a simple rubber O ring.

You guys are Amazing, and can do whatever you want. As a point of reference, as mentioned a few times below... US Navy (subs from my perspective) aligned berthing from fore to aft, for the reasons mentioned below, pitching vs rolling. It may also help to minimize sea sickness - you can imagine lying down while the boat is pitching. Love all that you guys share!
@neillambton40653 сағат бұрын
As for Berths laying across the boat, lots of modern boats have them. Have a look at some of the boats for sale vids from NYA, boats like Fairline and Sealine etc aft cockpit boats, they often have under sole double cabins which lay across the boat. Our boat has one across the beam in the aft cabin. They`re more common than you think. Great job as always folks, but be careful about jet washing with seawater, those shafts look rusty enough already, without any more contact with seawater.

It will still run at the same temperature but will take longer to get to that temp. You must fit a bigger fan to do any good or an efficient cowling. If you don’t have room for a bigger fan you can fit a pusher one to the outside of the rad. Still need a good cowling though.
