Back in the 80s I worked at a garage. There was three of us and I had learned to work on quadrajets after a while I had customer from a adjacent town come in and said he was referred to me to rebuild his carburetor because they couldn't get it to idle, after that I was getting referrals about 4 times month to rebuild them. The biggest problem with them is that all the air passages have to be spotless and the metering rods need to be cleaned. I would spend 5 to 6 hours on each one and never had one problem with them working right. Your videos brings back a lot of memories.
@Scot-p1v11 күн бұрын
First time I rebuilt a Quadrajet, I really lucked out because it hadn’t been mucked with even though it was 30+ years old. Patience, a spotless workspace, and getting every nook, cranny, and passage OCD clean actually worked. Surprised me, as I had heard they were nightmares-but I was determined not to let my buddy get further screwed on that shiny-but-crap 2nd gen T/A. Somewhat like you, I sort of got a reputation for pulling unlikely stuff off. I guess it helped that I was cheap and absolutely straight-up honest about my abilities.

Hey Dalton! Got a tip for you on the Rochester. Between the throttle body and bottom plate is two angled ports that are bowl drains with a pressed in plug in each. They are notorious for leaking into the intake. While you have the baseplate off just cover those plugs with JB quick weld or an equivalent and it will usually solve the troublesome rich running problem that you can’t tune out. I’ve been working on them since the mid 80’s and was winning drag races against Holly and Edelbrock weekend racers in my daily driver! Hope this helps! Love your content and hold high respect for your relationship with JD. Something that we’ve been missing for a while. You’re a good man, no matter what that bathroom stall in that Flying J in Rolla says!

@ try reading ‘’How to rebuild and modify Rochester quadrojet carburetors’’ by Cliff Ruggles. A similar book helped me immensely. I was a guy with big dreams funded by necessity, ingenuity and a tiny little wallet, more like a coin pouch! My favorite trick was spacing out the secondary needles with a paper clip under the needle holder to make the top end of the throttle a little spicier! Enjoy!

I have a soft spot for old suburbans, because my grandpa owned a few when i was a kid. He would stop by our half mile drive way in the winter, and let us get warmed up waiting for the school bus when it was freezing cold. He had the one's with the barn doors in the back, and one similar to your rig. He would also hook up sleds in the winter on his farm and drag us all over the place, good time's in the 70's and 80's up here in cold ass Michigan. I miss that man, he taught me a lot about working on old tractors and vehicle's. I love watching you and JD work on stuff, it reminds me of working on stuff with my dad, who died in 94 from an aneurysm in his aorta. He liked old Chevy and Ford's. I was only 23 when he died, but I'm the only one with his sense of humor out of us 6 kid's, he had a sense of humor kinda like you, and he would say the funniest stuff. He told me that he had a lot of respect for me, because i was a hard worker, and i would always look him in the eye and not lie if i screwed up. If more people spent the time with their kid's, teaching them something that they will remember their whole life, the world wouldn't be as messed up as it is. I also think if people would let their kid's drive, and work on car's at a youngert age, like i did, and you and JD have, they'd have more confidence in themselves, and not be afraid to try doing or fixing anything. You are really one of the best you tube channel's, you work with what you have, and get stuff done the way most of us have to do it. G-d bless you and the family, hope you and Jess get hitched, because i like how you all pitch in.
@thagerdorn200911 күн бұрын
My grandpa had a few as well. Had a 73, a 76 and an 87. The 76 I remember the most, was gold and white two tone. Had a 454. We'd go get a Christmas tree every year, and there was a steep hill going up to the farm, and he'd make us think the truck couldn't make it and would tell us to push the back of the seats to help it up the hill. This was in the early 90s, i was born in 90. But man I loved that truck. Then in the late 90s he had a black 87 Burb with a 350. It was like the truckers wet dream with all the visors and running boards and reflectors and stuff. He sold it to my uncle who then sold it to a guy who owned JD Equipment(now Ag Pro) here in Ohio and from there I don't know where it went. I'm sure the 76 is rotted and gone by now. It saw many a winters here in Ohio.
@died4us59011 күн бұрын
@thagerdorn2009, My grandpa had a two tone silver and white, an orange, and a white one. The orange one was his beater, but the silver and white one he kept clean, because he didn't want my granny getting grease and dirt on her clothes. Those old truck's were great i agree, i was born in 71, and l remember the smell of red man chewing tobacco, and how when he'd pull up to a stop sign, open the door, spit on the ground, and keep on rolling. He ended up selling them, except the two tone silver and white, was getting up n years, so he bought a 90 Chevy Caprice. You can't beat those old truck's, grandpa used them to push pull and drag all kinds of stuff. G-d bless.

Hey Buddy... I overhauled quite a few quadrajets in my youth, and I had good results every time (as long as the throttle shafts aren't worn out). One of the main problems with Q-jets is the cast plugs on the metering wells leak-- and they can leak badly! What I used to do was epoxy the well plugs. Also make sure the float height is set right, and the float doesn't have any holes (older brass floats) or hasn't gotten "water-logged" (so to speak, with later model plastic floats). And they like to be clean...

Those old hydraulic trailer brake controllers were the norm back then. Our 78 Dodge B200 had that same one and I just took one out of my 86 F250 last year it was a little different but hydraulic as well. Apparently, they are a lot smoother on the brake engagement than an electronic trailer brake controller. I used to see these suburbans all over the place until about the last 5 years, rarely see them anymore. If you turn the knob it changes the sensitivity in relation to the brake pedal input.

Trained brake mechanic here, never push the pedal to the floor completely when bleeding brakes, alway leave about 1 inch from floor, what happens is you will trigger the proportioning valve into fault, no going to the floor when bleeding keeps that from happening, if you happen to trigger the valve, by stabbing the brake pedal multiple times sharply and hard you can center the valve.
@PoleBarnGarage11 күн бұрын
I've got around a hundred of them under my belt, the issue is when they get 40+years old the valve gets sticky, so rather than remaining balanced it gets super sensitive and is "off or on" If you work it back and forth a few times they generally free up and act fine

A REAL quick test to see if it’s a collapsed / damaged rubber hose making your disc brake(s) lock on / drag after an application is to: Have a helper hit the brakes as hard as they can while you wait at the effected wheel then after holding at that pressure momentarily, have them RELEASE the pedal completely and remove their foot from it. NOTE: on vehicles with power brakes the brake application should be done with the power assist active (often that means engine running or key on). Now with the pedal released and their foot removed, nowhere near the pedal, crack the bleeder fitting on the wheel that’s locked up. If you get any pressure out of it, the hose is bad for sure. The next check after that is to make sure the caliper released properly and the wheel now turns without drag. If it does, you only need a hose. If it doesn’t, you need to dig in further.

My dad was fire fighter and had a side hustle as window cleaner he said NEVER just use a razor blade directly on the glass you must use window cleaner or something similar to the glass moist along it or you’ll scratch the glass!

This purchase is approved by the Empire of Rust. Also as a fun side note, rear brakes are absolutely optional, I haven't had rear brakes on the wrecker since I got it running. Unfortunately the front cross member is not optional. I do love that burb though, its pretty slick!

When I worked at a Subaru dealer back in the day, after steam cleaning the engine bay, they sprayed it down with a gloss clear paint. Everything. Hoses, wires, valve covers, boosters, top of radiator, A/C. etc

Oh well, you can't win 'm all, I guess. It looks sound enough to probably swap a new engine into. Let's see what Casey does with it, even if it isn't some crazy customization.

I had a 90. The absolute most bad ass beast of a truck on the planet. Love these trucks. Only wish I had more time with it. Definitely gonna own another one before I leave this world.

34:26 good job, Dalton, figuring out how to get the metering rods out. Another trick is to drive out the roll pin securing the accelerator arm just enough to remove it, then all you have to worry about is getting the choke rod thru the cover. Put the rod on the accelerator arm, hold it in position and use a small screwdriver to press the roll pin back in position, it's not held in by a lot of tension. Then just drop your metering rods in, secure them, install the choke arm and you're done. 35 year gm auto tech, I've literally rebuilt hundreds of quadajets back in the late 80s thru the 90s.

PBG, in my experience with different vehicles in various conditions I found that a red bottle of Heet has worked best for me. 10gal of gas to one bottle of Heet and drive the vehicle pretty aggressively till the gas is used up. I had an EFI 302 with a rough idle and off idle performance. Dumped a bottle in and went to the store across the street. When I left that second store, I immediately noticed a difference. Faster start up, much smoother idle, better take off power, etc. I'm not bias to brands, I'm bias to what works. And after trying everything from expensive to cheap products, Heet has delivered the best results to me.

Is the headlight switch also a dimmer for the done light like a 78-82 Corvette ? If it is just turn it back and forth a bunch of times to free up the oxidisation on the contact points and it will be fine

Glad to see that my music is still popular with the younger generations. Rock always goes with Engines and other noises. Dalton I have been a supporter for quite a long time, and have no intention of leaving, so keep on doing what you do as you do it so well. You know we've got your back , so never fear, we are here! EPA or whoever! From UK.

I love your videos. You and VGG make my Friday nights. I don't want to be that guy, but seeing you and your son wrenching and spending time together makes me want to speak up. I lost my father to lung cancer when I was 18. He died on his 46th birthday and had smoked since he was 16. My high school graduation was 4 months before he died. It wasn't joyous, it was filled with pain. I miss being able to spend time with my dad. I can tell you love your boy. Please, please PLEASE do what you can to stop smoking cigarettes.

ATF down the carburetor works good if you mix it 50/50 with gas and pour some in the carburetor before you crank it up. About 5-6 tablespoons of the mixture will usually do a lot for stuck rings without fouling the plugs to the point that it won't run. About a half of day of running will clear out the carbon and fouling oil pretty good. If it still smokes, work the heads. If it smokes after that, rebuild bottom end and reinstall the worked heads with a fresh bottom end and you are in business! Better option: Get a roller cam 454 Vortec from a junkyard. Pull the top end off, mill the heads .100 and do a valve job and add a fresh oil pump and timing chain while you reassemble it. Badass w/o a cam change Small RV roller cam and it is tough as hell (and you didn't have to replace the lifters). Mild throttle pressure will send both rears to the tire graveyard through a Posi(don't forget GM Posi additives!). Now that's how you do it! Oh, and if your 99 454 came out of a Suburban, they usually have factory headers that will fit the older Suburban chassis, too! Yall have fun and Take care!

Dalton, On the proportioning valve, you can re-center the shuttle valve by removing the plug that has the wire that runs to the brake idiot light on the dash. Once that is out of the way, you can stick a flat blade screwdriver down the hole and re-center the shuttle valve. Then put it back together. Don't worry, this won't allow air into the system.

My parents had a white late 70s model just like this one but with round lights. Had a 454 but my dad swapped it out with a 350 for better gas mileage. Lots of fond memories of that truck. Just got my PBG hat in the mail today. Love Richardson 112 hats. Keep the videos coming.
