Where I live we would raise the containers to allow airflow underneath. It also helps to prevent rodents from nesting under it especially if cats or foxes can get under. I would also cutoff and move the handles up, or add new handles to make getting in and out easier.

These babies are built so tough, mine says it’s good for like 67,200 pounds of cargo!!!! Unbelievable. And it’s able to handle 476,190 lbs of containers stacked on top of it!! These numbers absolutely blew my mind. I feel like it’s definitely an awesome storage option. I was first going to build a wood shed for my tractor which was going to need a strong floor. After pricing that I decided to see what a container would run me. Everything about it is far superior to a wood shed.

Locks only keep honest people out. The sides are 16ga steel... what you used to cut in the vents can easily open a door anywhere on each side, the end or the ceiling. It's better than nothing - but just barely. It WILL keep a casual pilferer out - so it's worth doing - but don't fool yourself.

Since you have the equipment on site, get you a 300 gallon water tote (or 2) and set them on top of the container. Gravity fed water storage without having to refill nearly as often. It’ll also give you a clean up hose with decent pressure without having to fire up your camper pumps.

Be sure to raise the container off the ground for ventilation to prevent flood rot

That’s a good idea. The container is getting moved this fall to its permanent spot. Maybe I’ll use railroad ties.

7:06 ya could of put the vent up against the top rib that way it would of hindered the rain from settling on top of that vent

My 1 trip was 4K but it’s only 20’ I found cheaper deals but didn’t trust them. Every other legitimate dealer I found was more expensive. It came with small vents and lockbox already installed, I will be adding more vents. I ended up with a completely new looking tan 1 trip build date 5-2023 so at the time of delivery it was only like 3 months old. I am completely happy with it. I’m using it on my property to store my Kubota tractor.

Oh also I put vents I bought at a big box store that would usually be used in a house soffit. Only $6 bucks each and work great and they are about the same size as the one's you are using. (Also already screened!). I put one at the bottom of each door. I have a whirlybird" vent on top.

Those vents will help prevent condensation on the ceiling and walls, but what about humidity? It looks pretty humid up there.

Thanks man. I watch your videos. That’s the reason I knew about those vents. I really enjoy your content! I’m going to get another container in a year or so, for my shooting range. I think I’m going to attempt to cut the side off of it and make some sort of garage style door that opens up, facing the range. I want to set it up, so people have a place to hang out and or reload/clean their firearms.

10 months after this video and Amazon has several options for vents. Ones like you show are now $200 the pair. As far as I understand, if you are going to put 2 vents down low and 2 vents up high, you should do low on one side of the container and high on the other, not crisscrossing them like you mentioned. That's why it's called cross ventilation.

I just paid 9k for a container for a 1 tripper double door, delivery not included. But….. I’m in Hawaii so we always pay more for the price of paradise😅. Great video!!!

Great video. I am thinking of getting one but wondered how the floors of these containers are made? Is it true that on the bottom there are just metal cross members to support massive weights with sheets of plywood over the open cross members? My concern is if the bottom floor is not sealed metal critters could naw through plywood easy enough and gain access inside the container. Appreciate your comments on this.

I’m not entirely sure how the underside of the container is built. The floor on the inside is made of wood. Now, whatever wood it’s made of is super solid. It’s the hardest wooden floor I’ve ever seen. It’s rock solid and I would not hesitate to park cars, tractors or put a lot of weight on it. I don’t believe it’s plywood. It looks like stained beams of hardwood planks, that are finished out real smooth and super tight together, with absolutely no gaps. I suppose critters could gnaw through if they desired, but I don’t really see that happening. Also, a testament of how these things are put together, is that they’re water tight. Including the floor. So, they’re sealed together pretty good in my opinion. If I were you, I’d go find someone with a shipping container and ask to go inside of it and take a look for yourself. Once you stand on the floor and stomp it with your foot, you might get a better understanding of how solid the floor is.

@@daddydelicious TU so much for the additional comments. I was going to rest a 40' on asphalt so that critters could not get under the container but (via great videos like yours) have learned that you must elevate these off the ground to allow ventilation. But if I raise it up 6"-10" then I could have gobs of critters living under it conceivably wanting to gnaw their way through the wood. Kind of a double edged sword. I live out in the country where mice & chipmunks are esp problematic. I wonder why resting it on flat asphalt is not a good idea?

I think it’s just to keep any moisture from building up under it, causing the wood to rot and the metal to rust. Mine is currently sitting on the ground, but is going to be moved to a more permanent location at the end of the summer, where it will be elevated off the ground.

WHAT KIND OF CUT-OFF WHEEL ARE YOU USING? I spent hours today cutting out a hole for a door and I had sparks flying everywhere!!! Used a fiber style METAL cut-off wheel. Supposedly made specifically for metal. Noticed you had almost no sparks!

To tell you the truth, the disks were just metal cutting disks from Amazon. They were a pack of 50 that were pretty cheap. The cut off wheel itself is a Makita.

Still only two vents. This can is in northern Michigan, so it’s not insane heat all of the time. In the dead of summer, we have a few 90 to 100 degree days. On those days, it gets hot in the can, but nothing that makes me worried. Nothing has been damaged in the container and we lean things like plastic folding tables and tools with rubber handle grips against the wall that the sun beats on. I wouldn’t want to be locked in the container in the middle of the summer for any extended period of time. When I open the container after it’s been in the hot sun all day, it feels to me like it’s maybe 120 degrees fahrenheit in there. Maybe 130. I could be off as I’m not the best judge of temperature, however, I’m never thinking it’s too hot. Then cools down quick with the doors open.

What model of CAT loader have you used to lift that 40-ft container? A 930 ? 938 ?

Thats waaaayyyy too expensive for those vents. CMW is super expensive for their products. You could easily spend double the money just to put a ceiling and walls in those containers.

How do you like the Big Air Vent's so far? What are the pro's and cons?

I like them. Very happy with the purchase. No cons at all. Zero moisture in the container and while it’s still hot inside of the container in the summer heat, I’m sure it would be hotter if the vents were not there. Also, zero rain gets into the container. The vents do well at repelling water from coming in. I would 100% buy them again if I get another container.

@DonLemke Yes. They actually recommend the big air 60s for this size container, but the 45s have been working perfectly. I don’t know if that would be the same in a different region, where there is more sun or humidity or whatever. This container is located in northern Michigan in the lower peninsula.

Would a roof vent be more efficient? I am a week from ordering a CONEX.

So, if I was going to order a roof vent, I would order the solar powered vent kits, that have a fan that is powered by a solar panel. The reason for that, over a whirlybird, is because whirlybird vents can still allow rain into the container. I haven’t installed either of those roof vents, so I can’t really say if either one is good or not from experience. But I’ve watched countless videos and read up about them both and if I do decide to put a roof vent on in the future, it’ll be one of the solar ones. Also, I do believe a roof vent is more efficient from what I’ve read and seen. I was just kind of discouraged to cut a hole in the roof, because I’m scared of leaks. Although, it is all gasketed and sealed, so you should be good.

@@daddydelicious you are right about letting rain in but they are all over the Southwest. My Dad had two on his house forever without a problem, but my neighbor replaced his with a passive one like the ones I installed on my house. Wondering if there are powered side vents? I would want a way to block the vents in the winter as I will be putting a solar system in and you don't want it to be too cold or too hot. Condensation isn't a huge issue in the desert.

I haven’t seen any powered side vents, specifically for containers, but they probably do exist. I have seen people put vents that are fan powered and open with the pushing air of the fan, then close when the fan turns off. That could be a viable option. I’ve seen people retrofit them from greenhouses and such, into their containers. I went with these passive vents on mine, because it’s on my property that is off grid and I’m not there all the time. If it was at my home or I had a dedicated power source, I would likely install a fanned vent that turns on via thermostat.

Correct. I could grind this box off in several minutes with a battery grinder as well. But the key to locking stuff up is deterrence. Anyone can break into anything with enough effort. All we can do is fortify something and discourage thieves to gain access. It would be pretty difficult to haul a set of torches 1/2 a mile through my property. But someone could easily haul a set of bolt cutters.

I got all of it from Amazon, but the vents are made by container modification world. You can google them and their website comes up. They also sell locks and the lock protector too. If I had to get another lock and protector, I’d go through container modification world.
