Shipping & Ports in Ireland, 1969

A look at how ports, big and small, shaped the economy, society and life of Ireland.
The Irish coast has over 70 ports ranging from small quays in the west of Ireland to the industrial ports of Dublin and Belfast on the east coast. The recent introduction of new forms of cargo transport such as container shipping, have changed the way Irish ports operate.
David Timlin looks at how Irish ports are changing with the introduction of new technology and shipping methods.

The Lion, leopard,Munster, Leinster,Innisfallen,Bardic,Doric,ionic. I sailed on them all you could have a good life then and bring up a family on one weeks wages. They truly were the good old days.

Many years ago 2 of brothers and I raced to get onto a car ferry at Dublin docks heading for Liverpool driving our green long wheel base X Pink Floyd transit van with a music cassette with no label blasting out good music, but we were stopped dead in our tracks as we entered the port by 2 very fine suited customs men wearing peaked hats, they wanted to know what was it like living the life of rock stars, could they have our autographs and also please can we a cassette of your music that you are playing, we explained a little that life was good, but we worked 7 long days and late into the night each week, we did not have much money but we were not complaining as things would get better, we were allowed to go on our way after warm had shakes, a good hard slap on the shoulder also waves and broad smiles and the promise that they would make copies of our music tape and pass it on to their kids and friends, As we were entering the car ferry the ramp was being to rise, it must have been 6 inches off the ground but we could not after to miss this ferry so I drive hard and managed to get on board with a loud crack but with no damaged to our wheels. We did not want to disappoint those very nice welcoming customs men so did not tell them that we worked as builders and were returning from a very short holiday. I regret that we did not keep that old green Pink Floyd van, it would have been worth quite a lot now
