As I have said before a ships siren is now a rarity on the Mersey, except when visiting liners come in the summer. Most shipping is concentrated upriver at Seaforth but oil tankers do visit the lower reaches at Ellesmere Port. But most keep quiet! New Years Day used to produce a cacophony of sounds but even that is quiet as most ships do quick turn arounds and don't linger in the docks now. Ferries come and go but even they stay quiet as often they are the only ship on the river. So anyone wanting to record ship sirens and horns would have long and frustrating waits!

I well remember hearing the New Years boat horn chorus... is there a recording of this somewhere?

Sadly the River Mersey is a quiet place these days, except when the Cunard Queens pay a visit.

The last time the IOM Steam Packets steam whistles were heard on the Mersey was September 1984 when the SS Manx Maid and SS Ben-My-Chree sounded their triple bell whistles for the final time. The Ben-My-Chree's whistle.was fitted to SS Tynwald in 1947. The Maid and Ben dated from 1962 and 1965.
