My mother was a child of the Depression and she raised 8 children of her own on a shoestring budget. Mom always said, "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without." Good advice for the times we're in now. Thank you, and God Bless you!

Exactly the way I heard the phrase. My grandmother was born in 1900 and had about 7 children. Although technically not part of the Depression of the 20's, with the loss of my grandfather to a roadside accident when my father was 12 years old... the family suffered and was helped by local angels as well. I saw the lessons of my uncles effects of that upbringing often. No waste was a normal lesson. Thank you for your story also!

We, here in Europe face the same difficulties as the American people... I stumbled into this recipe and did some cooking tonight (one person cooking), added some pepper and garlic to it, and it turned out delicious. Now I have 6 extra portions in the freezer (for later use) and it cost me less than a dollar for a portion. God bless you, M'lady 😘

I kept plastic container in freezer and when I cleaned off the supper table if there were leftovers in amounts too small for another meal such as a spoon or two of spaghetti sauce, spoon of corn or green beans I would toss them into my freezer container. When it was enough for a pot of soup, I'd dice up a couple of potatoes, open a can of tomatoe sauce, dump in the container have soup for supper, practically a free meal or 2. (TASTES better than soup made from all new ingredients)

When I was a kid my mom would take all the leftovers from the whole week and mix them all together in one big pot. We kids would ask "What's this?" Mom would say "I don't know, let's all try it to see if we like it". This happened on Friday or Saturday night every week. Usually Saturday. It became "What's It Night" for our farmhouse supper, it was delicious. Sometimes more delicious than the original meals it came from.

I can’t thank you enough for adding the scripture and talking about being thankful. I’ve just gone through a very tough time after losing my mother and I’m living alone in this big old house by myself. I miss my life of the last 20 years taking care of my parents. I miss them and I miss the life we had together. I started falling into a deep depression and I couldn’t seem to pull myself out of it. But I knew where to turn and I called my church and asked for a counseling session with one of the pastors. talking to him was like talking to my dad and all he did was remind me of God‘s love for me and that He has a plan for me. I know all these things, but yet sometimes we do get discouraged and that’s when our friends need to hold us up in prayer because we are weak sometimes. God has blessed me with some wonderful friends. If I can believe something that seems so ridiculous that someone dying for me tothousand years ago and they know every hair on my head, then it should be nothing difficult than to trust that His word is true! I still have that peace that passes all understanding. Thanks for sharing your faith and your yummy recipes.

In my opinion, Judith, instead of going to the Preacher and letting them give you a pep-talk. What I would do is look up a Therapist through your health-care provider that can assist you. Maybe, even ask the assistance of a psychologist, because I think that they are the ones who can prescribe medication. You might have clinical depression and it won't just get better by a quick talk from someone in the church, because it will come back and won't improve -- if you don't resolve the chemical imbalance in your brain that has occurred from the external trauma. So, I'm suggesting all of this, because I did same thing as you. And, it kept getting worse. So, deciding to really fix the problem -- instead of just "talking about God's Love" and a temporary "Feel Good" pep-talk, isn't what I needed, because the assistance from the clinical side who have degrees and medical training to really resolve and eliminate the problem. So, hope you don't take offense. If you want to interact more, just write back. Sincerely, I do hope you get better.

I went thru what you did. Lost my last sister. Now I have no family. I went to a therapist. All it did was break me. I will never do that again. They push pills on you. Coming from a family that pills broke them. No way. I took my Bible out and just started reading. Now I'm going thru stuff and getting rid of junk. I'm cooking making jelly's and jam. And I feel so good. And yes I catch myself calling my sister to ask about a recipe. Than I remember. But I'm gonna be ok. Keep believing in yourself and take walks. God is always there. You don't have to go to a church you can always talk to him. Good luck

Growing up my mom use to make miracle meals. Everything she made tasted good. I remember that when we had ground beef she would just add salt and that was it. We usually did not have garlic, pepper and any other spice. So when she would add just one more ingredient, lets say corn, man oh man we had ourselves a gourmet meal. I miss my mom. I'm a large city woman living now in a small country town. It's taken me years to realize what a pop is to a soda but I wanted to tell you. I made up your recipe and there's only two of us now that my daughter has gone off to college. I ate that in probably 5 different ways. I put over a baked potato. I made a Frito pie. I added beans, had a chili boat and I added spaghetti sauce and made spaghetti besides it's original casserole purpose. It was wonderful.

For anyone who is buying the canned tomatos, please watch your sodium content on the side of the container. A lot of brands seem to think they need to drown the juice inside with salt. It makes a big difference to your flavor, aside from being not very healthful. I have made this sort of recipe before, Becky. So glad you shared it. I usually keep at least one diced frozen onion and a few mixed colors of diced bell peppers in the freezer to add to anything I'm making. They add nutrients, flavor and body to the meals. Hugs!

Leftover spaghetti sauce? Mini pizzas! Divide English muffin. Top with a couple dollops of spaghetti sauce, add things like pepperoni, mozzarella cheese. Use whatever you like as Becky says. I remember my Mamma making a dish quite the same, but, she did use thin sliced potatoes or rice in it sometimes when we didn't have any boxed Mac & Cheese to use. And, she called it "Garbage Can Stew" or somethin' like that. 😋 It was a funny name, and, we loved eating it when she ever made it when we were kids back in the 70's. Being a family of six, we had to stretch our meals, bunches. I had forgotten about this dish, and, when I watched this video, it brought back so many memories. Reminds me of my childhood in rural north Alabama in the 1960-1980 era. Lots of beans, corn, and potatoes and a little meat. We hunted and trapped small game, raised chickens for meat and eggs. Grandma raised ducks, but they were for eggs only, she loved her ducks. Her brother in law had an acre in town and farmed it for greens, turnip and spinach. You could fill up a big paper bag for $1.00 , the turnip roots were extra...We picked leftover cotton, and corn on the cob after the combines cleaned the fields. We sold the cotton and kept the corn and potatoes. We went to church EVERY Sunday and Wednesday night. The old men would talk about farming and local news, the women were responsible for feeding all of us, a lot of cast iron crock pots full of beans, rice, and potatoes with whatever meat they could spare...

Set the IP to 7 minutes, then added some milk and the cheese mix along with some shredded cheddar. Sprinkled some "Slap Ya Mama" cajun seasoning over it...and wow. :)
