Shirley Bassey is one of the greatest vocalists of all time. I am from the USA and grew up listening to Barbra Streisand, and I have her recording of this song. THEN, I heard Bassey when in High School, and there was no going back! I have always liked Streisand's music, but I really enjoy Bassey's vocal style. She can sing with nuances with the best of them, but her high-fidelity notes are amongst the best in the business. She chose a strong ending for this song, but unlike some of the negative comments from Streisand fans, she doesn't belt every song ending. She simply selected a different arrangement than their favorite for this song. I also very much enjoy music from the great Peggy Lee and Johnny Mathis.

Dame Shirley Bassey is one of the greatest performers of my lifetime (I am 76). As an example try her performing "This Is My Life" in 1973 at the Royal Albert Hall, London. It totally sums her up.

She is just a plain amazing singer. What power, what style. She reminds me a little of Judy Garland. Also she's like the female Tom Jones--both huge voices, both welsh. both active a long time thru the same years.

I hear a touch of Judy Garland in Dame Shirley's vibrato on her powerful full-throated belts. Dame Shirley and Judy Garland are certainly great power belters, but also great storytellers in their singing.

I prefer Barbra's version too even if Iike this one nonetheless. "What's done is done" and "Easy thing to do" are my favorite on this album. And her 1973 "Excuse me" performance on TV is an absolute must-see as a masterclass of story telling !

Bassey's performance of this song is vocally thrilling, but Streisand's approach, which is considerarably more laid back, is infinitely more thoughtful and nuanced. Bassey's seems one-note by comparison. Bassey recorded a lot of ths same songs as Streisand through this period - What About Today?, What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life?, I've Never Been A Woman Before, Where Am I Going?, One Less Bell To Answer, I Won't Last A Day Without You - and they are all good. But listen to any of Streisand's versions and you'll instantly see why she is unsurpassable when it comes to interpreting a lyric.

My friend, you should try Dame Shirley Bassey with the Propellerheads in their song “History Repeating”. I think you will like. And talking about her 007 songs, I didn’t see anyone reacting to “Moonraker” (studio version), my favorite one. Just a sugestion. 👍🎶✌️

She proves that often less is more. Making more with less is her special talent. If you haven't heard it, you should also react to Peggy Lee's performance of Fever: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZvcY6aQbd51fbM Although Shirley Bassey and Peggy Lee have polar opposite approaches to the song Pieces of Dreams, each produces a masterpiece in their respective styles, and the world of music is richer for having both.

Shirley is way over the top, this is not a bond theme song! Too much drama without emotional substance and nuance. The Streisand version is the definitive version. Streisand understands the lyrics as both an actress and interpretive singer but becomes a part of the orchestra with her voice.

I respectfully disagree. They each give it their treatment and are both great in their own right. That being said, while I admire Shirley's power, I personally do prefer Barbra's more understated version.
