Likewise. All I've ever heard about this film is that it was a box-office flop.

Saw this some, oh I dunno, maybe 50 years ago on television in Chicago. Loved it then, never forgot it. Seeing it again now is fun. Stagey, and very far from Maertlinck's play, but Gail Sondergaard steals the show. Hated her character as a kid, I love it now I'm grown up. She's not necessarily evil, she wants her freedom just like anyone else, and notice that she does NOT come to a bad end. They tried to remake this once, but it was a dismal flop. It was never as popular as "Wizard of Oz", even though it has a somewhat similar structure. And I wonder if that's due to its touch of socialist thought (happiness is not to be found in Luxury, and the curious, serious young man revolutionary in Paradise), in addition to its Neoplatonism (the souls waiting to be born in Paradise, very Origen). Also, the consistent thread of darkness throughout the movie is remarkable too. The unhappy souls in Paradise, the cantankerous and tyrannous Luxuries, the melancholy souls of the dead grandparents (who interestingly are NOT in heaven), and the murderous forest trees, not to mention the unresolved ending, makes this film a bit deeper than the simpler message of "Wizard of Oz". Newman's glorious score certainly helps the movie along, also the visuals are incredible for the time. Perhaps I'm reading a bit too much into it all, but, I can't help seeing the other sides of the story. Thank you for posting it!

Blooper Patrol: Towards the end of The Bluebird, Shirley's dad tells her that he must go off to fight the French that very day. Shirley replies that yes, she remembered that he indeed had to. Which would be impossible, since her soldier dad had just been ordered for the first time the previous evening to be ready to serve the following day at noon. But that order - told to him in person by another soldier - was only mentioned while Shirley and her brother were in the middle of their "dream mission" to find an elusive bluebird. Oops!

I can't help seeing this as a really weak answer to The Wizard of Oz. It pales in comparison to The Wizard of Oz in all categories: set design (compare the sleek Art Deco Emerald City with the hideous rococo palace in this movie), art direction, special effects, characters (compare the iconic and genuinely scary Wicked Witch of the West to the completely forgettable Tylette), and even the music. Another thing: the scoring never lets up-- there is constant background music throughout every second of this film-- which has the opposite of the intended impact: it's numbing and actually reduces the drama. P.S. I see I am in the minority here-- most of the other commenters seem to love this movie-- so I expect to get flamed.

This was released in the year 1940. The Civil Rights Act of 1968 was still 28 years into the future. Life was very, very different before 1968 for minorities and especially for women. Even White women didn't have very many rights before 1968. Look up all the things women weren't allowed to do before 1968 - it will shock your socks off ! 😮😢 In 1965, my mom's mom died in Seattle, WA. My mother wanted her mother buried in a different state. My mother had no rights in Seattle, WA because she was a woman !! If she hadn't had a brother who was 10 years younger than her to sign the papers to release the body to be buried in a different State, my mom would not have been able to bury Grandmother in the grave that she had already paid for years before. Women had very few rights. Women were basically seen as children, needing an adult male family member to be responsible for them and to handle ALL business relating to the woman. It was against the law for a woman to have a bank account the year I was born !! Women could not rent an apartment in her own name when I was 10 years old !! You should read how life was before 1968 here in the USA, so that you will have a greater appreciation for how far advanced and how much freer it is now in the USA. In Saudi Arabia, it was illegal for women to drive until the country finally lifted the ban on June 24, 2018 !! 😮 So, the moral of this comment is: Please, Be thankful there is as much freedom as we do have here today in the USA. ❤

This movie had one creepy part in it that gives me the chills. The scene in heaven where the babies are about to be born and the couple who are in love with each other being separated. Totally cringeworthy. No wonder the movie was a flop with such a ridiculous plot.
@moonchildva2 ай бұрын
I thought the heaven scene was terribly unnecessary and took away from the theme of the movie; finding happiness, aka the "Blue Bird" wasn't too relavent in that scenario. Didn't make much sense either.
