The sexual subtext was not lost on audiences of the 1930s. There were plenty of people who criticized the Shirley Temple phenomenon, especially Graham Greene. In 1937 he wrote that Temple played deliberately to "a public of licentious old men, ready to enjoy the fine flavour of such an unripe, charming little creature." Don't allow nostalgics and atavistic freaks to convince you that this time period was any more moral, just, or worthy than any other era, including our own.

Her dress is short because back then, Pedophilia was less apparent in media. Sure it still existed, but it was not as openly discussed about. There were things considered voodoo that were not to be talked about, This lead to misinformation which confused Homosexuality with Pedophilia. It was a common misinformed idea that if someone was Homosexual, they were attracted to children of the same sex. Cost was another form, In the 1930s during the depression, it was cheaper for shorter dress's thus less fabric. Not to mention Practicality, Childrens cloths were designed for durability being as they would be outside a lot. Climbing tress and other things. It is clear that cloths now just focus on durability. Ever try climbing a tree with jeans? Much more difficult than climbing with shorts.

8DFahren Are you people really that dense you’re not able to understand what i’m saying? No, of course it’s not, however we live in a time where sex is constantly thrown in our faces by mass media. It wasn’t like that back then, those times were innocent. Of course pedos existed, but it was a rarity, and the majority of the public didn’t look at something and immediately see sex. You’re watching something from a different era with a modern day outlook. Thats absurd. These types of movies were wholesome and this scene depicts nothing more than a bunch of fatherly type men doting over a sweet little girl and singing with her. It really goes to show how far we’ve fallen as a society that all you perverts see this and your first thought is pedophilia. That shows theres a problem with you, not the movie.

Michelle Bitch how are you unable to comprehend this movie is from the 1940’s? It’s meant to be portrayed as a wholesome kid’s film featuring a girl on a plane with a bunch if war time men singing a song with her. They aren’t touching her sexually, they aren’t saying anything sexual, literally the only thing sexual about this is the way YOU perceive it because of your modern day overly sexualized perception. If the first thing you think about when you see a little girl with a group of men is pedophilia then that is a YOU problem, not an issue with the film. This movie has existed for more than half a century and literally no other generation than this one has ever complained about it. Know why? Because our generation has had sex shoved down our throats in every form of media that we tend to always see things in a sexualized light, past generations did not. I really hope this makes sense to you now because if it doesn’t you truly are a simpleton.

***** What does ' hey ' mean ? This was the best child actress that ever lived during the most difficult times in society; and regardless of depression days and war: was the one that brought great joy in the lives of others. Far from a spoiled Hollywood brat, she gave hundreds upon hundreds of her gifts away to children whose parents could barely afford to put decent meals on the table. When interviewed she spoke with respect but was still a child and would make so many reporters laugh as well as movie producers such as Walt Disney, Presidents and other political figures all over the world. There will never be another child actor such as she was because she was so genuine. ' hey ' doesn't exactly show any respect for her legacy left behind nor for her family that loved her or friends; as well as those of us that grew up two generations after her movies were made; enjoying them. Nobody looks worse then a person who places even one word of disrespect on KZbin:- then the one who placed it.

@isrulius4 жыл бұрын
Greta Helfter I’m sorry for snapping at you but I’m so tired of people watching these old videos and immediately seeing it as sexual when it’s not. In our present day culture, we have sex shoved down our throats constantly, however things were completely different back then. Where we think of sex when it comes to everything, that was literally the last thing on their mind in that era. Yes pedophilia and sex crimes occurred back then but they were extremely rare compared to now. It’s really just a sign of the times and shows that our culture perceives everything as sexual, even when it’s not. People in the 40’s watched this clip and found it heartwarming: a bunch of fatherly type men doting over a sweet child and singing a wholesome song, in comparison, we see a group of men and a young girl and immediately think of pedophilia. Do you see how it’s all about perspective? Pedophilia is a rare occurrence even now. Pedophiles are a minority in our society, yet despite it being a rarity, we act as though any man that interacts with a child that isnt their own there’s something sinister going on. That’s seriously messed up that people’s minds immediately go in that direction. Does that make sense?
@isrulius4 жыл бұрын
javiera gutierrez Clearly you see the world with a perverted mindset if you immediately think of pedophilia when you simply see men interacting with a child. Nowhere in that clip did they indicate anything sexual, they didn’t touch her inappropriate, didn’t say or do anything that indicated sexual attraction or intent. Everything that’s supposedly “wrong” with this clip is literally all a matter of perspective on your end, which is proof that it’s your mind that’s perverted, not the film. You claim I’m blind and that I’m unable to see what’s wrong with this video. If that’s the case, then explain it to me: what is sexual and inappropriate about this clip? Here’s what we have: we got a group of men singing with a little girl, that is it. Is it wrong because it’s men interacting with a child? If that’s how you see it that not only makes you a pervert, it also makes you sexist because you’re implying that all men are predators when that is absolutely untrue. You’re the one that’s blind in this case, not me.

There is nothing sexual about this scene. It revolves about her singing about candy in a room full of pilots, since they were pilots, that is why you do not see woman since it was a period of time where woman weren't pilots or at least not as common. They only touch her so they could hold her up, not anything else. Notice they grab her up from the upper back and chest area, that is how multiple people hold up someone. Also, girls don't have boobs at that age (I believe shes 5) they aren't grabbing anything that doesn't exist yet, they are just holding her up.

Shirley Temple: Hollywood is run by pedophiles and Shirley was just another victim. There are people in these comments who call things like this “innocent” and say it’s not perverted at all. Go read Shirley Temple’s autobiography and watch a documentary on what went on when the cameras were off. Search “Shirley temple disturbing history” and watch that mini documentary and let’s see if you have the heart to say it was all just innocent and fun. Shirley temple admits herself that she was abused during her childhood by many of the actors and producers she worked with. They made her work long hours without break, and if she messed up or misbehaved, they placed her in a tight box with nothing in it but ice. She sat in there and froze all because she acted like the child she was or made a mistake. She was forced to work and act no matter what. Even when she was sick, hurt, stressed, etc. They even made her work a day after she had surgery on her ears! If a scene called for her to cry, the director would tell her that her mom got kidnapped and murdered, or some other equally scary shit. She would begin to cry and cameras would start rolling. Shirley Temple also admits that she got married to a man when she was 17 for the sole purpose of lessening the men who were sexually harassing her and trying to get with her. She talks about times when grown men would try to seduce her, chase her, etc. all while she was a kid! She even had a man expose himself to her. The man she married turned out to be a mistake and she was depressed, suicidal, and lonely. She got divorced after being abused and mistreated by him for many years. Shirley Temple acknowledged that what she was made to do in front of a camera was inappropriate, disturbing, and exploitive. I know we want the world to be innocent and think this is just a fun little film, but it’s time to realize that childhood abuse is terrifyingly common and for every four children, there is one who has experienced abuse. We can’t sweep pedophilia and perversion under the rug. We need to realize it’s happening and not ignore it!

Yes, this was a completely different time and we are judging it by today’s standards, which is not fair. However, let’s not pretend like child exploitation and pedophilia did not exist back then either. It just wasn’t discussed as openly as it is now, among many other things. This video is creepy though, lol, but it was probably perfectly normal to an audience of its time.

Thank you for talking sense. People today are so stupid and look for issues everywhere because they don’t have any real problems.

@@emusaurus Wtf are you talking about? Child actors of that time have reveled in their books how they were sexually exploited and sexually abused!!

@@emusaurus Audience of that time have literally talked about how awkward it was back then. Nobody was looking for problem, the problem presented itself. get away from children.

It's not because at the time pedophile overtones were more tolerated in certain circles that it was not a problem for the children thus exploited. Judging past events with current knowledge of systems of abuse and domination: I really don't see where the problem is! It's quite healthy!! :)
