Oddly enough despite the relationship between the Shirai Ryu and Lin Kuei referencing historical facts like how Japan was influenced by China and the bad blood between the 2 the Lin Kuei aren't really based on any historical group (the Shirai Ryu are based on the inhabitants and factions in Iga Japan during the Sengoku period a known hub of Ninjas/Espionists, the most obvious one being Scorpion himself being named after the Master Ninja Hanzo Hattori) The closest to the Lin Kuei are 2 rebel groups during the fall of the Han dynasty the Yellow Turbans and the Liang Rebels. The Yellow Turbans was a Taoist peasant rebellion that is made up of peasants, priests, bandits and mercenaries that rebelled against the government because of its corruption and the famine. The other is the Liang Rebellion a more organized group that rebelled in the Frontier regions of China made up of disgrutled soldiers and locals in the Frontier angry about the Han's growing corruption and the Wars within the region of Liang. There are many other Chinese Secret societies and rebels but these are the ones that fit best with the age of the Lin Kuei being hinted at to be Ancient, one is even called the White Lotus Society. (though both groups don't employ kidnapping children however)
