I play this song, because today I said goodbye to a friend. He died at the age of 36. Although he was young during most of the Dead's days, he saw the last concert, on Jerry's birthday before Jerry died. The laid him out today in the shirt he would have wanted to wear....of course, a dead shirt. If anyone reads this, keep my friend in mind, because he was a true Deadhead. RIP Steve.

You know what made the Dead great, above all other things? They loved what they did. They may not have been the best musicians, and they certainly had their good and bad years. But if you, as a listener, place any value on soul and emotion, the Dead provided. Jerry and Bob lived what they sang. They meant every word of every song.

Was a couple blocks from my house in downtown Monterey tonight when "Midnight Moonlight" came wafting through the air. Had to go see who was taking me back 30 years with that Old & In The Way classic. Nice little all girl blue grass band playing at the Mucky Duck & doing it justice. Feeling nostalgic now; Misspent youth following the Dead around. Back stage New Years '84; Was living in Vancouver BC when American Pie part 2 was the news. Another day the "music died"...
Sure is a beautiful song. It makes my heart pound 😁 😍 (°;~}

There are people in both the younger and the older generations who "don't get it". Who are we to judge who does and doesn't? It will always be that way. Be happy there are people who do understand in the younger generation. The love continues to live on and it always will, regardless whether people like you define who "get's it" or not.

Last heard of, ripples of sound waves of this song had reached a galaxy far, far away and still travelling at the speed of light. Sound travelling at the speed of light! It is perhaps seeking out Jerry somewhere out there, scattering pleasure on the way, all the way.

A lovely sentiment. However, the signal of this song has only traveled 36 light years. The first radio signal has gone 100 light years. While there are quite a few in that volume, on the scale of the galaxy, that's hardly even noticeable. Space is Big. Really Big. zidbits.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/how-far-in-space-our-radio-broadcasts-reach1.jpg

Say what you will about the Grateful Dead: they were an essential part of the American fabric, the American story of this century, like some of our Great American Novels. And they were phenomenally talented. I mean, Jerry and David Grisman recorded an album of the music of MIles Davis, in addition to everything else they did. And the music of the Dead was based in part on bluegrass and country. You can't get more quintessentially American music than that. Some of our most talented people left us too early: Michael Jackson, Jerry, Jimi, Janis. to name just a few.

To go to a Dead concert was to be transported to another dimension. It was a dimension of musical mastery. The Dead would transport you on their music. They start out playing a song like Uncle John's Band and go off on a 20-30 minute jam and then at the end of the song you realize what happened and all you can do is just think "WOW THAT WAS AWESOME." And then they do it again and again and again.....

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung, Would you hear my voice come through the music? Would you hold it near as it were your own? It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken, Perhaps they're better left unsung. I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. Reach out your hand if your cup be empty, If your cup is full may it be again, Let it be known there is a fountain, That was not made by the hands of men. There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night, And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. You, who choose to lead, must follow But if you fall you fall alone. If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home. La dee da da da, La da da da da, Da da da, da da, da da da da da La da da da, La da da, da da, La da da da, La da, da da.
